to clarify, while there's many Rei bodies, there's only one Rei soul. When one body dies, the soul goes into a new Rei body. I think.

I always believed the rei's were "piloted" by shinji's moms soul. and each time she dies and is reborn, more of her memories and personality are lost. until she became the shell of a person we are introduced to her as in the first episode.
