its incredible how young you are, yet you're so responsible, passionate, and professional. i love how organised your videos are. I'm just blown away completely.
Not going to lie, I've never been very fond of sand boas due to their lack in length, but seeing how friendly yours was at such a young age really turned me onto them just like that. I never noticed how cool these little guys could be.
KSB are the single best reptile to keep as pets. Trust me after keeping a bunch of different reptiles sand boas are hands down the best. Get a sand boa and you will have no regrets, get anything else you will have regrets. Super cool pets.
Sorry for replying 2 years later but do you think they are better than corn snakes? I’m really trying to figure that out before December and I want a snake I can handle without it trying to get away every second Edit: I got a female sand boa :)
@@tyronereiley2411 nope they are super slow, mine likes to wrap around my fingers sometimes and doesn’t even want to be put down. They are pretty slow snakes.
Alexis Wilson It couldn't eat you even if it wanted to. Lol. Maybe you can show them a video. There are some here on TH-cam with even babies playing with snakes.
Great video overall! I've had my sand boa since 2015 and he's only 16 inches long eating hoppers. In the video you mentioned using a heating pad to achieve the high temperatures, everything I've ever read and people I've talked to say to keep them away from heating pads and I agree with them. Because these guys are dessert burrowers they're used to the high heat but the reason they burrow is the get away from it, so having a heat source like a basking spot is more ideal for these guys. Having the heat source from below the tank can actually hurt these guys since they like to get down to the glass, thus sitting directly on the pad. I currently have a plain old single dome lamp with a 150w bulb in it, but I'm planning to get a double soon with a ceramic heater for heat and a regular light bulb for light so I can get away from having to replace the heat bulb so often. Hope this helped!
I have a male and hes wonderful. Suibian is the most beautiful snake I've owned. Hes been easy to care for and I'm really enjoying his company. We are both introverts so it's perfect.
I just got my first sand boa a few months ago from hills herps. I LOVE him!!!! I want to get a female and intend to breed later. thank you for this video !
Hey. Not an expert and I know this is a old post. Just wanted to mention they are live bearers like all boas so maybe that is part of the reason for boa classification and also they have similar relatives in the USA you should check out called rosy boas and rubber boas. Love your channel.
Alex, what is the substrate you are using? Looks like aspen but little “chips?” The aspen we get is more “shredded.” We are getting a KSB soon and I want to set up the habitat. Thanks!
Yeah, they're called aspen chips haha www.amazon.com/Zilla-Snake-Lizard-Litter-Aspen/dp/B007DI163C I've actually switched my sand boa to aspen shavings (what you're using) though, because I found it holds burrows more nicely. Both are great though!
Yep, I always create the written out sheets first which take a lot of researching, then I try to get them reviewed by other keepers so not sure how long it'll take
From watching content on Brian bartcheks channel I think you are supposed to have the bedding a little deeper so they can completely burrow beneath the sand/substrate.
So does this snake get confused easily? Like the way it went after the mouse would it do that to my hand when I'm cleaning or refilling water or trying to handle?
Sand boas need to bury and I don't like using actual sand as substrate so I'm using aspen chips which seems to work great. I'd try to find other digestible loose substrates. Probably not coconut husk, but I'm sure there are other types of wood chips you could use.
I have a Kenyan sand boa. I’m not positive on the gender but I’m calling her a female. She’s anerythristic and she’s such a doll! She’s my first snake and I’m so happy with her!
Southern California Herper when I wanted to get my first reptile my parents were totally against it. But I would take them to the pet store and let them hold the animal and I told them many facts to convince them. Know I have reptiles. But since your dad thinks it will get out u could but waits and put them on the lid and u could clamp the lid down.
my parents also hate snakes, i work, so they let me get one but i had to pay for EVERYTHING (even the power for the heat lamps...). if you offer to pay for it then there's probably a higher chance of him saying yes, but only if you have a steady income, keep in mind that snakes are pricey to keep. for the tank you could get one with a sliding top and a lock like the ones he has in the video, i have one and my little guy has never gotten out. put the snake in a really secure room and tape up any gaps that the tank might have in it. and if you want to be really safe, get a secure lid for the hamster cage too.
How often do they poop and shed? I've had him a almost 4 weeks and fed him five times. (He is a very good eater) No sign of feces. Also, how often do they drink?
They usually poop as often as you feed them, so generally, he would've already pooped 3-5 times if you've fed him 5 times. If it's a young one, the droppings are really hard to find because they're so tiny and could easily be at the bottom of the substrate. As long as your temperatures are correct and he's still eating, I wouldn't worry right now. And usually, snakes can get all of their hydration from their food but they occasionally need some extra. Snakes usually shed every few months when they're young and growing a lot. Then, adults only shed a few times a year
+GoHerping thank you for responding even though it was so long ago:) My snake has pooped often (very often at that) And he is very healthy. He is about 1 foot now :3 I'm adding a female soon in 3-4 months when she is born :)
you shouldn't keep snakes together, especially male/female or male/male pairs and even moreso when they are different ages/sizes. Snakes are solitary creatures unless it's for breeding.
I agree that their head and body shape doesn't really resemble boa constrictors, however I do see the resemblance to anacondas (the thick body and thick neck with a sort of narrow head), and anacondas are actually part of the boa family.
The head and tail looking the same actually is a type of defense for predators. Instead of attacking the head the predator is tricked into going after the tail, which is rough and has kind of an "armor plating" on it. Your KSB is a beautiful girl!
Hello Alex. My question is not related to Kenyan Sand Boas, I need help with my corn snake. The temprature gradient is just right,(about 72-75F on the cool side, 85-87F on the hot side) but she dosen't really spend time in her hot side hide (she also has one on the cool side behind her water bowl), she usually hangs around on the cool side. Could that be because I'm doing something wrong, or is it just that my snake dose't feel cold?
Generally, I just use water but if an enclosure has water stains or smudges I need to remove, a water+vinegar mix works well (just have to make sure it gets thoroughly rinsed and airs out so the reptile doesn't come in contact with vinegar). I also use mild soap with food and water dishes if needed.
I know this video is old and idk if you’ll see this but I’m a little worried about my Kenyan sand boa. He keeps making little noises and his mouth is wet kinda. The other Kenyan sand boas I’ve held never had this and im kinda worried. Hey, I have a question. So I have a leopard gecko (for a little over 2 years) and I've been using heat lamps. I've noticed that he always tries to get away from the light and wondered why. When I saw your videos I was horrified and felt terrible that I was doing this to the lizard I care so much about. I hurried to look for a heating pad. I found the heating pads at my local pet store (ZooMed brand). What wattage of heating pad do you recommend for a 6-inch leopard gecko?
The heat pad wattage is based on the size, and size is based on the enclosure's volume. For example, they make one for a 1-5 gallon, one for a 10-20 gallon, one for a 30-40 gallon enclosure. If you believe the pad may be getting too hot, you can use a reptile thermostat to maintain the accurate temperature :)
Ah, I'm so torn! I'm not sure whether to get a ball python, cornsnake, or a Kenyan sand boa! I've researched all of them and they're all so fascinating.

The main reason they are classified as boas is that they are live-birthers, which is one of the main things that divide boas and pythons.
