VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
In this video, you’ll learn about each generation - who they are, what shaped them, and what traits define them.
George Orwell once said, "Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.”
Does that describe your feelings towards other generations? People tend to feel their generation is the best generation. But no generation is better than another, just different.
A firm understanding of just how different the generations are is important in today’s multi-generational workplace and marketplace. Understanding the generations allows you to appreciate those that went before you by comprehending some of their struggles and triumphs; and it can prepare you for the changes and opportunities that will inevitably come with the next generation.
Who are the Generations?
We will be reviewing the western cultural generations. Other areas around the world such as Japan, Asia, and portions of Europe will have their own generation definitions based on cultural, political, and economic influences. However, the emerging generations, Millennials and Generation Z, have characteristics and behaviors that match their global peers, more so than previous generations.
Also note that these are generalizations, many variations of the generations can exist within regions, both geographically and culturally.
Here is an overview of the generations.
The two asterisks in the bottom right represent how large these generations were at their peak. Unfortunately, the older generations are not this large anymore due to individuals passing away.

Generational spans are likely to shrink to 5-10 year spans, instead of 15-20 year spans, because of the increased level of exposure to significant events thanks to our hyper-connected world and increased exposure to innovations in technology that are altering behavior during moldable years.
My favorite generation is probably the silent generation. They grew up in such a shitty time period but they still valued hard work, respect and appreciating the things you have.
Also they tend to be more open minded to change. (unlike Boomers)-someone from Gen Z
Yeah. Just look at Featuremam.

My daddy was silent generation. He was a 4th Gen Texan. Grew up hard and no tolerance for lazy or not listening . Whipped my ass. He loved big and hated rules. Didn't conform. If it weren't for him I wouldn't be me, which is him, and this place in time. Tough as nails and don't conform
nah bro I love the baby boomers
As a person born in the early 80's I find it hard to identify as a Millenial, while when I was in High School; the internet was picking up traction and was in its infancy to the mainstream population, I mostly remember my life pre-college being without internet, cell phones, definitely no social media. So when you compare me to someone born in the mid to late 90's, who might have been a toddler during 9/11, or grew up with a cell phone and always having and ipod...I just can't find our common ground. I had seen some lists that start millenials in the mid to late 80's and that makes more sense.

Agree - I grew up in a completely tech-free home until maybe 1996-1997, and even then we had to watch the amount of time we spent online because the internet was expensive! My family had a shared cell phone that we all used (i.e. when I went out of town to a football game with friends on a Friday night in high school, I took the phone). Otherwise, it was a landline with call-waiting - which didn't come until 1995, I think! Before that, it was the busy signal.
Sorry for the rant... I could go on and on about how I don't feel connected to the Millenial era.
I was born in the middle of 1984. According to some sources I am a millennial (generation Y) but according to other sources I am a member of generation X.
i wouldnt say I think my generation is better than the other ones, I’m just proud of it. It is true that as a baby Millenial literally right at the edge born 97 it definatly affects your brain and how you think and I think im a calm and relaxed way that is totally seperate and different than Gen Z and i am a dreamer and hope and dream rather than am realistic or logical. I am glad I am this generation in my life 💛❤️ super proud 20 year old here! turning 21 in April
Kaila Deprey without logic nothing will work btw, I'm 1997 too, but I hate my generation. Too much useless skills and false knowledge and not useful stuff. But it's not our fault. This is how we're raised and we're encouraged in education to pursue these useless things because the older generations deemed it a necessary part of education.
I’m sorry to say this but if you were born after 1995 you’re technically generation z
@@gonnaregretthis2926 Just like with each generation, the line tends to move based on most common experiences. Gen Z has become known as the social media generation. Widespread use of social media and taking advantage of TH-cam monetization is a common experience to Gen Z from their mid to late teens. Millennials do not share this widespread common experience at such an early age.
Ur gen z

Curiously, the term "Lost Generation" is used for the generation that preceded the GI Generation, the one that was shaped by WWI. (The term was coined when many American writers [both black and white] went to Europe and Gertrude Stein [then living in France] was told that, as a result of the Great War, there were "une génération perdue", a lost generation.)

Wonderful Video ... I liked the content.
Some say that gen z is 1996-2010
Thana now its says1993-
good they should leave it at that and stop changing it, I'm tired of being bumped back and forth between millennial and Gen Z just leave it at Gen Z for crying out loud
Some sources have it from '97 to 2012 and estimate everyone born in 2013 up until 2025 as the so called Gen Alpha.
Yes. Your date is correct. Always go by sources like Pew research because I’m not sure what credible source says 1993!

Everybody should stop hating theirs or other people's generations. It doesn't matter how people generally act in your age demographic. It matters how you act.
there's nothing Millennial about 1996, most people I know who were born in 96 act completely like Gen Z
Your a millenial get over it!
General Leopold Horchigli you just wanna be a gen z but nahh you’re a millennial.
Exactly
Gen Z are simply Millennials who solidly have GenX parents. They are still Millennials because generations are defined by the eras in which they are children, and cultural eras are all about 20-22 years in lenght.
cause they are gen z lol
Honestly, people born between 1995-2005 should have their own generation. They have nothing in common to the younger generation
Gen z: 10-23 yrs
Gen Alpha: 9-0 yrs
Lady Earth. they just didn’t add gen alpha probably because they are too young to have too much history
I was born in 1984 and I don't consider myself a millennial generation. To me the Millennial started in the late 90s to the 2000s. Now recently I seen some articles that they're changing it to the 70s as started the millennial generation it's like they keep pushing the post back further and further.
Imaminimonstertruck That's dumb. I think the "millennial" generation is already broad enough. I see 1982-1998 as the most common sweep and that's already a huge gap, though does make some sense in that they were the kids watching the rise of the internet.
Again I don't fit the millennial stereotype because the technology we have now didn't exist growing up. Yes cell phones exist back then however not everybody owned unless you're privileged Zack Morris character living in Silicon Valley. Same with the internet. I didn't have the internet in my house until 2008. In 2002 I was still using a tape player and yes CD players were around but I could not afford to buy new batteries every 2 days and yes there is rechargeable battery but again I'm not a privilege Zack Morris character at that time. Also Mp3 player were very expensive at the time when I was in high school. So no I don't fit the millennial stereotype demographic and need to be changed.
Anne B. That’s my problem as well. I see 81-97 or 81-2004 and I feel that’s way to broad.
Idiot. Millennial means old people like you. Those born after 1999 are called Gen Z, and rightfully so. A much better generation than dumb millennials.
Millennial is early 80s to early 90s
Can anyone help me with this. If I want to count the number of generations have passed. Which number this generation would be?
Dont understand how you can call a millenial someone who is born 2001

The generations really DO need to be shortened. In regards to the date range of millennials, someone born in ‘81 had VASTLY different experiences growing up than someone born in ‘96. The end birth date for millennials should be ‘91. 10 years long.
People born in 1999 and 2000 are technically more millennial than anyone, that was the millennium.
There's no definite indicator. Many reports have Gen Z starting as early as 1994 or as late as 2005.
Generations are based more upon when that generation's formative years were, rather than their birth date.
I get what you're saying though. Millennials are technically just Gen Y to my knowledge, but somehow the millienial name stuck and I find it annoying.
I was born January 3 2000.
Makayla Goldsmith agree i berd there was a generation Y
Millennials are people who lived through the new millennium young, but still old enough to remember to have lived through the 2000s important events
Please someone can say me 2 main ideas about this video
I am an old Gen Z XD Born in 2003. I have to say I didn't really think about how we were shaped by other kinds of terrorism other than 911. The Boston Marathon and so on. That is a huge eye opener to me. I don't know why but I found that pretty fascinating.
I was born in 81 and I consider myself gen x. Most studies show that gen x start from 1965 - 1984. And the reason why this is such confusion because it's all made up to categorize society. Then it was a study that said it was 1961 - 1981 which rightfully makes people who were born in 1982 gen y. You guys keep changing saying it's this... no wait, it's that because I believe when you guys do these generational studies you find out that people are not standardized on that particular generation so you say they belong to another. Most people my age including myself were latchkey kids which is knows to be "generation X trait".
I think if you were born between 81-83 you get to chose. It’s such a gray area.
I feel if your going to talk about generations you should always bring up that Generations will never have 100% ending or starting years. What makes somebody born in 1981 diffrent from someone a few years older or a few years younger. What makes somebody born around 1996 or 1998 diffrent from people a few years older or younger. People born around those time periods shouldn't be considered only one or the other. To be honest who cares about this generation stuff everybody's different. Generations seem to be just a bunch of stereotypes. Are we really going to call people igeneration because of a electronic companies name. Are we really going to go around calling people by labels because it just seems pretty cheesy and dumb to me. You can find similarities between people no matter what age they are.
Yo Tim. Yea! UR TOTALLY right! I was born in 82. My mom is a Baby Boomer. I identify with Generation X
I'm gen X born in 79 but I identify with Gen Y much more. To be fair, I don't remember anything from the 70s. My childhood was the 80s, my adolescence was the 90s. I go by roughly every 20 years when counting generations; I feel like it's easier to get my head around. However, I recognized those of us on the cusp of generations may find greater identity w/ a generation not our own.
People born in the late 70s and early 80s, about 1975-1985, have their own subcategory called the MTV generation or Xennials, as they're the borderline years of the youngest Gen Xers and the oldest Millennials.
Surprised you neglected to mention The Lost Generation (1880s to 1900) since it existed and the last of them to pass on did so a year after you made this video.
That's cos they're basically all dead in fact now everyone born before 1903 is dead
'TheLostGeneration'/'TheGreatestGeneration(GI)'/& the 'old' SilentMinority: 1880-1928
Gen x 1976 although I don't identify with older ones of this generation
Late Gen Xers tend to have more in common with the Millennials because they share access to the internet and cell phones in their mid teens to early 20's. This is not a common experience for early to mid Gen Xers. Many Late Gen Xers also share with Millennials the common experience of being raised by Boomers.
@@kj475 That's just about right, born in '78.
@@kj475 We do have some in common with Millennials except when I hear a Millennial say something like "SLAY! " or "YAASSS". Or they say something to the effect of "You are the one that decides your sex...there are many sexes". Then I feel like we are further apart than we really are.
@@kj475 Oh and this is petty..just like my crack about the terminology of Millennials...but when the obsession with Taylor Swift comes in..then I think I am nothing like a Millennial.
(Approximately) . Originally baby boomers were classed as a group born up to the very early 60’s. I mean approximately 1960.
Each new generation shapes another as old ones shape new ones. Past ideas are a part of life as much as new innovation becomes life. We can't take high technology back and predict all the changes as a result today, ided like to think removing others would have spawned new replacements. Well never will know will we?
In the end, it narrows down to empathy. Then, we wouldnt be beefing.

I prefer the original term for millenials which was Gen Y, because it fits them better. They're always asking Why they have to work and pay for things.

A generation is a 20 year period statistically. 1900 - 1919 is a generation, 1920- 1939 is a generation. 1940 - 1959, 1960- 1979 is X 1980- 1999 is a Y generation. 2000-2019 is a Z generation.
The Baby Boom 1946-1964. Accordingly, the term “Baby boom” was used to describe a block of time (1946-1964) where an extraordinary birth rate post WWII occurred; not returning to pre-War level until 1965 was observed in the United States. Consequently, or perhaps because of the passage of time since the phenomenon, there has been much ado over the naming as well as, what years comprise this or subsequent generations i.e., Gen X 1965-1980, or Millennials 1981-1996 . As a result, there has been a departure (by some) from the original reasoning behind the “Boomer“ descriptor. Seemingly, in an effort to reorganize the various generations according to subjective experiential and sociologically driven desire, to categorize and redefine cohort groups into something neater and tidier according to them. Fortunately, everyone has the right to their own opinion concerning these somewhat petty items. However, it could be argued that if it were not for the original Baby Boom observation and subsequent naming of that phenomenon, it is entirely likely that conversations concerning these matters would be very different, maybe even dry and inconsequential.

Generation Z starts in 1997 and has no established end date yet. That is determined by the authority of setting the parameters, Pew Research (who actually do credible research on the generations and not just casual observations or taking opinions from other sources).
Either way, Generation X is the only positive generation today.
@@btetschner GenX coined the term 'doomer' from the doomer-boomers
@@vitoandolini7095 Which Gen X'er did that?
@@btetschner The wannabe nihilistic/punk/goth/emo doomers of GenX, which they stole from the nihilistic/punk/goth doomers of the BabyBoom
@@vitoandolini7095 It doesn't make sense that you labeled GenX (Gen X) doomers.
Shouldn't millenials be around 1999 ..2000 ..2002 ..which is closest to the millennium date . ?
They have to experience the new millenum growing up to be millennials.
Waitttt then what generation Am i if I was born in January of 1998 ?😂
Adi Ivgi millennial or yz cusp
RIP g.i gen
Most are dead
Anyone else is gen z?
I'm Gen Z, yet I hate everything about my generation. I hate the trends, music, style, etc.
Punisher1237 I agree, but luckily, most of us seem to be conservative.
Well I found out I'm a Millennial. 1983-2002. I was born in 02
Punisher1237 That's incorrect you're gen Z. You were born after 9/11 so you don't even remember that or y2k. You also grew up when smart phones, flat screens and iPods were around. You're a post Millennial.
@@wynndoesthings8662 I was born in 1996 and I'm very conservative,
I think Gen Zers are more libertarian unless "conservative" has completely changed. Imo, nothing about Gen Z is conservative. To me, conservatives were farmers, Christians, hated the idea of Marijuana being legal, etc. I fall in line with this type of conservatism. Saying "I hate SJWs" on the internet doesn't make someone conservative, lol.
The next generation is Generation C. The catered generation!
Proud to be Generation X. Growing up in the Reagan and Bush years were the greatest. However I have always liked the Boomers born in the early 60's more than most of my peers born in the early 70s.
Boomers are post world war 2 gen xers we are born between 1964 to the early 80s
You know you are millennial when you had Windows 95/98 for a computer as a kid, lol
1God1Fury i didnt even have a computer until 2002. If you can remember tvs that relied on tv top antennas, you are a millennial. I fall under that.
No I don't feel smarter than the Boomers. I feel like Gen X and Boomers both have some very smart people. Maybe when I was 18 I felt smarter. I do feel better than the Generations below me though. With what is going on in the world today..yeah I do..not gonna lie.
Except Gen X. We dont give a shit.
Boomers ended in 1965.
You bumped Gen Xers up too far
and Millenials back too far I think
1981 still gen x
1982 milllenial
1981-1996 is millennial
Gen Z... but I wish I was born in the generations from baby boomer and before that
Boomers are considered the worst generation.
You forgot gen alpha
Generation Jones are not boomers
True or they could be described as the 2nd half younger part of the Boomer generation.. I was born in 1965 and I feel in between Boomers and X..
Your wrong boomers are 1945 to 1963 gen xers 1964 to 1983-84
I'm 50 and a gen xer.

Hmmm I guess I wouldn’t be generation x I would be a damn Millennial or stuck In the middle I was born in 86 nooooooooooooo 😭😭😭😭😭😭😫😫😫😫😫😫
B_side 86 What's so bad about being a Millennial? Honestly I don't get it as one myself. Gen X tried to hard to demonize our generation before we were even old enough to shape the dam world.
