  • Savage Worlds is a fast, genre-neutral, system which has a good amount of depth with medium crunch. If you like exploding dice, simple resolution mechanics, and tactical combat this is a game you want to check out!

SWADE is my go to system. It really is easy to learn, has enough crunch, and can do almost any setting. Thanks for spending time on reading it, making a superb review on the layout, and a good review on rules.

Savage Worlds is a great system if you want to only learn one system but play a ton of games in different worlds. I played it exclusively back in its older "Explorer's Edition" for about 2 years, and it was great. As I've become a pdf rulebook hoarder, it's now usually at the bottom of my list as there is always a new shiny that I want to play with.

As much as my inner geek loves differents kinds of Rpgs with work, house, kids I simply don't have time and energy to "check out" and play every new Rpg anymore. That is why I love Savage. Read it /Teach it **once** then play...anything. It's the last Rpg you'll buy.
New setting? Everyone at the table being familiar speeds things up soooo much. You can then concentrate on the important things.
Clever Roleplay is rewarded with Bennies.(not just joker)
So if you want excel in combat, (like in: not die) 😂 you have to put in some effort in your RP.

I'm in complete agreement. SW does just about anything you can imagine for RPG settings. It's Fast, Fun and Furious. My favourite thing is that it is so easy to create your opponents, being quite clear that your NPCs don't need the prerequisites for Edges that your PCs do. I doubt that I'll ever need another set of rules and I've been using SW for 10+ years.

Funny, for me it's not an issue of no longer having the energy to check out new games. It's having the time to actually play a game, let alone a campaign, of a new game. So I collect and read and put stuff on the shelf and wipe away a little tear.

Good review! I got the SWADE core rules at the beginning of the year and have been looking forward to getting it to the table. I too love systems that can handle different genres; it's appropriate that you're looking at ICRPG now as well. I cut my GM teeth on ICRPG and I think Hankerin absolutely nailed the balance between simplicity and mechanics. It feels to me like SWADE takes the simple, fast and intuitive spirit of ICRPG and provides a library of options to add mechanical crunch and flavor to suit their concepts/settings. "Options" being the key concept here - SWADE is a comprehensive toolbox for GMs to run whatever kind of game they like!

Yah, I’ve now reviewed three genre-less systems and am just getting started with ICRPG. It opens up possibilities to do genre-jumping adventures without changing mechanics, and I LIKE that idea.

Good Overall, I think the explanation on how damage was done as graceful as you can. I feel that it is a great system but it's difficult to explain with out examples. Good job covering it. Again if you want to do a live stream one shot let me know.

Oh, also, Jokers signal that you reshuffle the deck. It's super interesting, because unlike rolling a die where you can get any number every time, there are only so many 8s and Aces. And if the high cards are used, the low cards ARE coming. Except that the deck does occasionally shuffle and reset, and when that happens is a random 2 out of 54. In practice, it's not super significant. But it's mathematically quirky.

@DMTalesTTRPG It’s a pretty darned good system. Probably the easiest system I've found to customize and homebrew into damned near anything. I've used it for 1920's Era pulp adventure, sci-fi, Old West, modern crime drama, superheroes, cyberpunk, modern military, modern horror, and a high fantasy airship campaign. It did all without a whole lot of issues. It may not have been the best system for each genre, and it can get mechanically repetitive if you play enough, but it transitions between genres so easily and it's so easy to learn that it's at least worth playing a couple campaigns with.

@@DMTalesTTRPG - Their Deadlands setting is pretty cool and has been around for awhile so the latest Adventure Edition version has been long refined. I still have various Savage World settings from the previous edition of SW which require very little conversion too. Some of my favorites being cyberpunk (Interface Zero, with new AE version also sometime soon), fantasy (Hellfrost), and Solomon Kane to name just a few of the many.
