    Hi Gary, thanks for your videos. Could you make a video explaining how to set up an external drive as a "extra storage" for the macs? I´ve seen differents ways and some of them might lead to errors. I´m talking about extra storage, not backups. For backups I found the answer on your channel but for extra storage I still have some doubs. Thank you and a happy new year!

      See th-cam.com/video/ZsWWQAsSU2w/w-d-xo.html There's nothing special to how to set it up. Do you mean the format? Just format it APFS.

      @ Thanks for the response. I mean archive files manually to an external drive or move the home folder to the external drive which seems to lead to errors with OS updates, boot from the external drive which force you to loose apple pay, apple intelligence…Im looking for a safe way to avoid paying for the extremely high storage prices from apple… I will go for 1TB which will work for now but not forever. Im looking for nothing fancy or superspeeds just a way to keep file history, backup everything at once to an other ssd with time machine and run VMs from the external drive. I think do it manually will be the best but if you have a better idea about how to do it I will appreciate it a lot. Regards and happy new year.

      @@4nkn0wn. Definitely don't boot from, or put your Home folder on an external drive. It is fine to store things on an external.

    Is there any way to dictate the priority of the internet traffic?
    Sometimes I want it to load videos, but it is spent on caching a big file that I know I am not using so soon, vice-versa.
    Activity Monitor and Terminal don’t seem to do much (Too much "read" and too little "write/edit"?)
    I had to turn off Automatic Update because it just tends to prioritize downloading the update (when I am still actively using it).

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No. But rarely should this matter. Often the speed bottleneck is on the server end anyway. Automatic updates shouldn't be an issue. It should do those at night unless you are doing something you shouldn't do like shutting down your Mac at night.

    When you use Download Now or Keep Downloaded, does the file still exist on iCloud? If so, if I make changes will the changes sync with iCloud?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes. Of course. It is always on iCloud. It is just whether it is cached locally for quick access (and offline access) that is changed. In order to make changes, it needs to be downloaded (cached). So if a file isn't currently cached, then just the act of opening it will download and cache it. "Download Now" is only a way to do the same thing without actually opening the file. In order to make changes to the file, you'd need to open it, so the act of doing that will download it.

  • @briantdaniel9280
    @briantdaniel9280 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Do you know how long a file is cached on the local hard drive before it removes the download and puts it back in iCloud automatically? I've always wondered about that. Happy New Year!

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      There is no set time. It depends on many factors: how much free space you have locally, the size of the file, how often you access it, etc.

  • @Joebnx1
    @Joebnx1 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I really like having the files accessible via iCloud. What drives me a little crazy is when I create a new pages or numbers document the file is in an app specific folder until you move it to a location for storage. If I’ve forgotten to do that it can sometimes be hard to find again.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      When you create a new document you can save it wherever you want. You don't ever need to save it in that app-specific folder. Just put it where you want straight-away.

    I still find iCloud Drive confusing in practice, despite the number of your videos I’ve watched! I just use it for backup, keep working files on the computer and make duplicates for ICloud Drive.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      There's no need to duplicate anything. A file in iCloud Drive is available you to while in iCloud Drive like any other. Just think of it as an external drive that is invisible and works via magic. As for backups, you should use Time Machine for a backup. iCloud Drive is NOT a backup. I use a NAS, is there a way to get all of my devices to use it instead of iCloud storage?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You would just decide to put the file on the NAS instead of in iCloud Drive. It is up to you where you put the files.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ - But what about multiple devices? I have no clue how they might be synched. LOL!

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Erin-Thor With a NAS? There is no "syncing." A NAS is literally "networked attached storage." It is an external drive that you access over a network. That's all. The files are not on any of your devices, they are on the NAS. You access them when you connect to the NAS and view the files there.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ - LOL! I get that, but I don’t allow remote access to it, I was thinking more along the lines of remote access and possible file duplication, and what happened when I synched all of my devices again with the NAS. Clearly I have more homework to do, and I hate homework. Happy New Years!

    Thanks, as always, for the FANTASTIC video. Since Time Machine I have considered in a sacred cow because I always want a LOCAL backup of ALL data. And Time Machine backups are essential for that. BUT when OPTIMIZE is ENABLED, what happened with Time Machine backups ... and restores for the files that are NOT downloaded. Does that make Time Machine backups pointless if you have iCloud Desktop and Documents ENABLED while having Optimize on? Personally I always DISABLE OPTIMIZE and buy 2-4TB MacBooks and Desktops.. But what happens to people who do NOT do that and THINK they have Time Machine backups that are actually backing up their data? Thanks for your words of wisdom.
