Fun fact: After the publication of Martin Chuzzlewit, which did not sell well even then, Dickens went into a profound slump which only healed when he visited a mill in Manchester and got the idea for his "ghostly little book" we call A Christmas Carol. Great video, Emma! Hang in there!
it didn't sell well in serialisation form, but it did sell very well when it came out as a complete novel. He's clearly struggling to find inspiration in the first part so I can understand why people would get put off fairly early. The bit where the story goes to America is a bit of a chore too, because Dickens had an axe to grind and he's more interested in attacking Americans than actually getting on with the plot. But Martin Chuzzlewit does contain Sairey Gamp, who is one of Dickens most famous comic characters, so it's worth staying with it at least until she shows up reeking of spirits and going on about Mrs Harris.

“Marina” by Carlos Ruiz Zafón is VERY underrated! I read it last autumn and it’s got perfect dark/spooky vibes and it’s such a unique story. I really recommend it 😍

I feel you on being anxious/stressed. I just started my last year of university while working part time. I am paralyzed by the stress of all the assignments (plus master thesis) which of course only makes the stress worse because i end up falling behind my time plan….not gonna lie at this point i am looking forward to being done with university. 😅
My undergrad thesis was on the German Industrial Revolution, and four years later I wrote my Master's Thesis on German Law (because I was getting my law degree at the time). And looking back I'd agree it is a stressful time in life, tho to be perfectly honest more often I think about a girl I knew back then and what I did wrong. In retrospect, actually there were two: one in undergrad and one at Law, my point being that classwork is stressful but in the end not as important as a long-term relationship.
I stopped going on youtube for a while, but the second I opened the site I clicked on this video. Your positive attitude is so refreshing, as my life is currently spent despairing over college admissions. Also, I recently read the shadow of the wind; it was perfect! It's the best read for fall! this comment looks like a college essay lol help

i remember last year when i was in a different country for school missing home SO intensely, i watched your vlogs for moments of comfort and familiarity. now i’m at a new school in my home country but still very far from home, and i can’t say i’m surprised to have ended up back here watching you when i miss home. hearing you talk about your move and how that process has been is relatable and makes me feel better about struggling to adjust to a new city that i was initially super excited about. it’s tough but i really hope we both settle in and start to feel at home

A geology professor interrupted class to tell an Iceland story about four professors caught in an unexpected eruption. Fiery rocks were falling around them but they stayed in one spot, seemingly having a calm conversation. So, naturally one of the first questions to them upon their safe return was the topic of it. They debated the math of running away in a shower of stones and that of staying put.
ICELAND?! That’s soo exciting! Also, Calcifer has gotten so big!

I went to Iceland this spring - you’ll have a great time! It wasn’t exceptionally cold in temperature, but very windy. I’d highly recommend going to Diamond Beach and Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon.
Taking it at your own pace, we love to see it! City life can be so draining, but I hope you managed to get a good rest and recalibrate your senses a bit. I hope you have the loveliest time in Iceland, how exciting! ❤

Iceland is so gorgeous, I'm sure you're gonna have a great time on your trip! One of my recommendations would be to do a guided tour to see puffins. I did one on a small island in the north called Drangey, it was incredible. If you're on the east coast, there's a beautiful small town called Seyðisfjörður that's definitely worth checking out. And yes to whale-watching! Hearing you talk about Iceland makes me want to go back too💜

Careful with bag handles and cats. My cat got his head stuck in the handle at night and got so freaked out he somehow split his nail from trying to get out frantically. Now I always cut the handles open so he definitely doesn’t get stuck
The goddess of Iceland planned this trip for you... It heard you last year raving about SNOW! So all other options went out the window.
If you want to choose another book for Spain maybe you can choose a book written in one of the beautiful co-official languages of Spain. For example, written in Catalan you have "When I sing, mountains dance" by Irene Solà, which I think you'll love. It's the story of the people (and maybe not-people, like mushrooms, bears or the mountains themselves) who live and have lived in a little town in the Pyrenees. A really special book, in my opinion. (If you want a classic you also have "In Diamond Square" by Mercè Rodoreda, the story of a woman during and after the Spanish Civil War).
Yesss ICELAND. You're going to love it! It's so pretty and just has a mystical feel to it. If you eat at the supermarket in Iceland it's much cheaper! Eating out is SO EXPENSIVE there
For your Spain read I recommend A Heart So White by Javier Marías. A spectacular (but challenging) book, really one of the best things ever written in our country's literature IMO. The author recently passed away as well :(

Ciau, Emma! Missed your vlogs so ty for making this. I also went to a concert recently, it was The Cure and also the biggest concert I've ever been to. I love their music but tbh that big of an event was a bit too much for me. At one point I thought I was going to get sick from how tired I was and my legs hurt sooo bad from standing for 3 or more h as there were not a lot of songs that you could dance to. I guess I needed this to know that big concerts aren't my vibe. haha
Love the Calcifer screentime. About the collar for Calcifer - remove the little bell, it might be cute but cats have very sensitive hearing and it will be annoying for him. As I can hear in vlogs, he like bells in toys but wearing one around the neck and hearing it all that time is another thing.

Emmie! I went to Iceland and if you're in Reykjavik, the best restaurant I found was Svarta Kaffið. They only menu item is soup! The place is so cozy and warm. They invite local chefs to prepare one vegetarian and one meat soup that day and they are served in fresh bread bowls! I think you would love it. Enjoy your trip!

Recommendation for whale watching: even if you’re not prone to motion sickness please take some gravel beforehand or something, I vomited for the full 3 hrs of the trip although it was king of good because apparently it attracts whales 😂
All of Carlos Ruiz Zafon novels are precious to me, but if I could recommend you something is reaaaad Marina, it will make you cry, bring you on an adventure and make you love love so much. Hope you will read it one day. Sending you lots of love from Belgium ❤️

I think you should give it a try to the shadow of the wind books because the other three ones are completely different from the first one and the story is so good (it's not a book about books anymore) but I also know if you are not very familiar with Spanish history you may not enjoy it as much. I just want to say don't give up the whole story because of the first book

Balancing priorities isn’t always easy. Sometimes you’d get distracted to the point where you end up losing focus on what you actually need to do. Emmie’s just great at what she does in her own life. It’s incredible to see her evolve.
You have to read burial rites by Hannah Kent when you’re in Iceland. My favourite book.

emma, i got three cats at the same time! we just lost our first cat, max, and we couldn’t handle an empty house. they’re all orange tabbies, and they’re brothers from two separate litters- two are eight months, one is four months. the little one looks just like calcifer! his name is theo, and the other two are named charlie and miles. seeing our boys always makes me think of yours!

Hey, Emmie. Don't think you'll see the comment by this point, but worth a try. You read so much, do you ever think about writing books yourself? What type of genre/themes would interest you as a writer?
Honestly if I were you I'd push through The Shadow of the Wind and read it for the sake of the sick twist / ending alone. I read it a long time ago and was definitely too young for that type of content but since then I've wanted to go back to it just because of how disturbing the resolution was and see if my reaction to it changes.
