With this tempo of progress, when do you expect we'll see the fourth launch? Could it be within the next six weeks, or is April off the charts?
@Whataboutit love from India
Toothbrush YES!!!
Toothpaste Nooooooooooo!!!!!
Great choice for a new presenter.. yes he has been around here lol but awesome presenter
Scam
Haha you said Day-Luge, What a maroon!
Felix looks different.
Why, why not Felix?
Nah, I think he looks the same. Maybe it's the lighting 🤔
All that fatty American food.
I think you mean "differnet" 😂
Sounds the same though… weird.
Good to have some variety. The newsreader here is very clear and in tune with the content, while avoiding being unnecessarily overenthusiastic.
Thank you to all WAI team.
Greetings,
Anthony
The overenthusiastic manner of Felix is exactly what I like so much! We need a counterweight to the naysayers and beancounters on traditional media, always denying the great progress SpaceX is making.
this is like saying green m&ms are your favorite because they give variety
I am totally with you. I was thinking about comment on this as well, but I thought I might get interpreted rude which I really not want to be. But I agree on both, I like to see another face and also I was finally able to watch an entire video after a long time of watching WAE. You hit exactly my thoughts.
It's good to see TJ relaxing into his role nicely. He seems much more comfortable this episode, which for me personally equates to a far more engaging experience. If you read this TJ, keep it up, you have the potential to be a great presenter.
Space X builds 12 buildings at the same time, and it takes me a month to get a building inspector for a movie room addition.
😂😂😂
That home theater will be amazing to watch launches in
Maybe you need to throw a few gazillion dollars at the problem like Elon does 😆👍
Hope your movie theatre doesn't explode 3 times in a row.😂
Gotcha Dude
"Differnet" sounds like a great alternative to the Internet!
it was second on the name list for Starlink
Its nice to be able to get updates on all of this without feeling exhausted at the end of the video
I like your style of presentation, feels not as overcaffeinated as Felix.
Agreed ... Felix gets on my wick after a few minutes
Maybe they could mix narration styles, so that we could take a break sometimes.
@@stanislav4607 Maybe they could sort of put a "special department" on to felix where he can get excited about this for the contribution and then it goes on with other stuff. Kinda moderation handover , like in tv shows.
I love your way of presenting! Thank you
I certainly don't mind alternate hosts of this programme. You all know what you're talking about. However, following the same narrative format and identical script language, including catch phrases that are supposed to convey the sincere thoughts of a individual, actually degrade the message by making them pro forma, rather than sincere. So, find something different to say than 'You rock', or 'Let's dive right in'. Cronkite had 'that's the way it is', and NOBODY tried to adopt it other than Cronkite. Same with Rather's 'Courage!' but for different reasons. Informative vid. Thanks very much!
Agreed, let TJ have his own catchphrases.
My name is Felix, welcome to whataboutit, let's dive right in!
You rock!
"starship updates.."
“Starship updates”
Re the test stand; My guess is that that heavy footer work behind the flame diverter is going to be one side of a railway of some sort to slide the stand back and forth. Combine that with a permanent/fixed gantry crane over it and the setup becomes simple: bring in the test article on SPMTs, pick it up with the gantry, remove the SPMTs, slide the stand under it to set it down, etc.
I hope we can get more WAI episodes with this guy, he is a good speaker.
My thought is that the Starship should just practice, with attached legs, landing multiple times with "test" chopsticks to see if the ship can be controlled enough to maneuver for the chopsticks. Then after the Starship proves it can work with the test chopsticks, practice on the booster. You have to build a dedicated test chopstick structure and landing platform for this. But you can improve the accuracy and reliability of the landings now without having to attach the ships. And you can improve the chopsticks quicker too. In the near future this dedicated test area can be used for other updated capabilities, new prototypes, etc. In the meantime the launching tower(s) can be send up the ships that have been tested.
The Argo will be captained by a man named Jason. His crew will be called the Argonauts. As for the ship, it will be using Felix engines because...they rock!
Great Comment ! Engine, you mean a Solar Sail ? tjl
I am very sorry to have to write this comment. It is not to show disrespect, not to show lack of appreciation, nor is it to disparage. -- My honest motivation is to enhance the enjoyment and increase the number of subscribers to this channel.
Now, I was very happy with Felix, especially before the time his family moved to the US. Even after that, I was very happy with his narrative. But then one day someone else had to do the narration because Felix was unavailable right then. -- To my astonishment, I found that particular episode more engaging, easier to follow, and less intense, less gripping, less enthralling. Up until that I always found myself out of breath after Felix' flamboyant, haranguing, sensationalist and escalating narration.
Make no mistake, I absolutely admire Felix' adherence to fact, to respected sources, and absolutely to a relentless pursuit of excellence!!! That is the True Value of this channel compared to the nearest competitors! At least IMHO.
-----
Combining today's narrator's grounded and relatable reading with Felix' ambitious and effusive transcript actually reaps the best fruit of both worlds.
So, I hope, in the future, Felix advances to the Main Producer and assigns this guy to the default Narrator.
(Just my $.02 :-) I wish all the best to you all, and expect to enjoy this channel many more years in the future! 🙂🚀❤)
Nope don't agree, I like Felix............ you just like hearing an American accent, Felix's quirky enthusiasm makes this channel worth watching, amongst the myriad of Space X related channels that are out there.
Are you the new hosts mom seeding the pot with positive comments? This guy is no Felix lmao, i am American and much preferred Felix. Whatever, there are 10 of these spacex update channels.
The only thing I would change is to consider viewers who watch all Felix’s videos. There is a lot of time dedicated to introducing each advance in general terms (calling each advance as historic game changing rapid progress in technology/capability which is good context) … except when you’ve already heard it 5 times in previous videos. I would cut it in half and get to the specifics quicker.
I'm the opposite, I'm so sick of hearing American accents that I prefer the previous narrator.
Could not agree less. Felix's spirit and love of space flight is infectious and I hope he remains the main host and someday gets to go into space himself!
Turns out the launch tower needs reentry tiles as well lmao
I will always remember booster 4. It was faithful, always there no matter the cost! I love you booster 4! I always have!
Awesome presentation. Thank you!
Hi TJ! Well done!
Felix is a unique and lovable phenomenon that we all appreciate. This is not TJs first rodeo and he always does a great job!
Brilliant quality
I giggled at "it has 4 legs, resembling a spider..."
Biology is not everyone's strength 😅🕷️
A very sick spider.
@@CityOfTinyLines Or a spider that has survived an encounter with cruel humans.
Somebody failed biology 😂
It was a bad day for Incy Wincy.
Wow, Wow, Wow, a magnificent set of updates on SpaceX; Starship; the ESA, etc.!
Well done, Sir!
Imagine it launching on April 8th during the total solar eclipse. A Starship launch with that as the backdrop.
Hey hey TJ! Great to see you again, and I particularly liked the news about Argo, all new to me, and which so far none of the other “space nerd” channels seem to have picked up on. Worth a subscription, people!
IFT4 on 4/20 for sure🧠
I'd love that. 1 year anniversary and all, but it falls on a Saturday, and there had been an agreement with the county not to launch on weekends to minimize beach closure complaints.
Me too!@@Rorschach1024
5/20
May 4th
Unfortunately impossible. Gwynne said 6 weeks, so that NET early May
I think it's important to always mention that this is a test program and the entire workflow and sequence of operations is constantly evolving based on lessons learned, just like the damage to the launch pad. During a test program, failures are the most valuable events
Now if only the mainstream media could get that through their heads
Ok. The question is if Boeing, NASA or Blue origin had these same events would you also say that? Hmmm. You might but we all know a lot of Space X 'fans' would not. In this day and age a test program need not feature the catastrophic destruction that this one often does. Space X is frankly re-learning lessons that were learned by Sergi Korolev and Werner Von Braun NASA and Roscosmos in the 1930's to 1980's.
@@HontasFarmer80 Would you specify what those lessons are? Thanks.
@HontasFarmer80 It's their rocket, they can test it however they feel best. Obviously it's working since every launch it's getting further and launch wait times are getting shorter. Unlike Nasa or any other space agency who has literally 1 chance so it has to be perfect. Because of that It takes years of design, building, and perfecting the final build. I don't believe landing the largest rocket ever made back at the launch pad with "chopsticks" was something Von Braun, Roscosmos, and Nasa had done from 1930s to 1980s. Lastly, who says they aren't using knowledge from back then? They aren't reinventing anything, they are improving upon it in a that makes sense. Before you say cost isnt worth the investment, Elon is literally one of the richest men in the world, he could launch a starship out of his pocket without making a dent in his wallet. Sorry if this sounds like I'm arguing, I just see the positives in cool things like this and I wish other people did too. Have a good day:)
@@appliedfacts that rockets need a flame trench 😂, you know the lesson Elon muck is going to re discover / learn. @HontasFarmer80
The launches are exciting and the way the testing gets faster and faster but the changes in the build site are pretty amazing too. Star Factory is going to be huge - what a change from the three tents that they ran with for quite a while - and looking at that helicopter shot I also remember how I watched in awe as High Bay was built and dwarfed Midbay. Now I look at those aerial shots and think how small Highbay looks compared to the two Megabays.
I do wonder if, once the new huge office building is finished or even partially finished, SpaceX might demolish Stargate (I think they’d need to buy it first since they don’t actually own it?) and Highbay to make space to build another Megabay which, knowing SpaceX, might even be more “mega” than the existing Megabays.
After flights 1 to 3 with the beating the quick release system, I think, they should get the quick disconnect to swing away horizontally, as they have to do with the crew walkways, so they have as minimal heat distortion or broken flexible pipework like in flight 3. Maybe using some of the chopsticks cables and guide gear?
It's obvious that the qd hood can't totally cope with the heat, vibration and raw violence of the worlds biggest booster ignition. Swinging it away horizontally allows a greater distance from the booster lift-off flames and turbulence, minimises potential repeat rebuilds of the hood and frame every flight. That would simplify post launch repair and allow faster stack and launch cadence.
And it's going to need something radical like this for when spacex innovate even more powerful rockets, and larger booster/starship versions coming on stream.
Or put it on the other side of the OLM, so it is not in the exhaust of the Tower avoidance maneuver..
Righto, I thought perhaps like two shields coming from both sides, like when you clasp your hands. But moving it sideways is even simpler and more effective imho.
Plus, I'd say they will do as per your suggestion, because it is closer to Elon's mantra - the best part being no part.
I will say that one of those ideas, or maybe something else entirely is or will be in the work. Probably current repairs are just for next launch, or modification will be that substantial that it is waiting for launch pad 2 ready to overhaul pad 1
Guys, does it make sense to expect that the Starship has a camera under both upper wings? Since the available clips showed only the side shielded from the plasma (the left one), I think it would be fantastic to get a glimpse also from that side which went down first, right? As we didn't see it, I think the SpaceX team has it however and can see what this plasma cloud did with the heat tiles.
I wish more of these SpaceX prototypes were saved by NASA or another government organization for US space exploration museums.
Love The Red Line Heli ! So Cool !
The two towers reference is so hilarious😁
As a long time Texas resident, I am curious about weather mitigations. I am sure they have to do this at the Cape in Florida. Is all of this infrastructure protected from a tidal surge of 10 to 15 feet, and 200 mph winds if a hurricane comes in. My first hurricane experience was Carla, back in 1961, where she just about covered the entire Gulf of Mexico in clouds. She came in at Port Lavaca. In the process, she sucked all of the water out of Corpus Christi Bay. All of the boats at the Marina were on the sandy bottom. The water came back, hitting Galveston. The devastation was incredible, looking like a bomb went off. Lots of tornado damage, and the tidal surge went over the top of the seawall. Houses within a mile of the beach were obliterated. I am all for SpaceX, so I do get concerned about a Starship factory and launch towers, and tank farms disappearing. I always look to the future, expecting the best, but preparing for the worst.
Nah, SpaceX don't worry about stuff like that.
Or anything at all, if we are to judge their actions.
Short answer: they rebuild.
Been wo sering the same thing myself.
My family used to go down to Boca Chica back in the 90's and other times since, including since SpaceX started building there.
So, yes hurricanes hit there and storm surge for a hurricane that hits the Mexican coast will sure flood the whole complex
I do love SpaceX and will always take up their cause, but they can be a bit shortsighted. I was complaining for a year prior to the first launch that the lack of a water suppression system would doom the rocket. It did. Looking at the tank farm dented to shit as well. But their hardware-based approach works, for the same reason it worked for the Russians in the 50's and 60's.
A lot of descriptions of Elon’s plans include the word “ insane “. With good reason.
Good job TJ!! Cheers from Canada.
This video was fantastic, definitely deserved my sub👍
Thanks, great work!
I watched you guys on 3:14 and it was fun watching how Felix was super excited.. I usually watch the Space X feed but it was fun to hear someone who loves space like Me.
Another great piece of the Bards of our time that tell me stories about the advancements in the crazy rocket stuff!
I wasnt expecting TJ, that's a pleasant surprise!
Hiiiiiiiiiiii
TJ.... You're doing a great job !
Wow Argo looks amazing! Totally different to anything else. Really a game changer
Looked good, but "totally different"?
To me, it looks *_identical_* to the one it's replacing! 😅
Thanks, from Spacejunkie Team!🤗
Since you described their increase efficiency of progression, I’d say they would launch again somewhere before July of this year
The new footing extending out from the flame trench could be for a test stand slide system. If the new test fire stand was dropped on slides and slid over the flame trench it would eliminate the need for a crane.
Just picked up the IFT3 shirt sweet design. ❤❤
april 20th would be funny
420 innit xD
Great update and latest news, thanks again. Love from Oz. I'd like to be in a position to join the channel, but recently retired due to health issues and about to start dialysis, every dollar is recognised as a rare species.
Great video, WAI.
Very well explained, nice precise language
Gotta love Argo using an inflatable reentry shield. Thing is basically a ballute from Gundam haha. Always interesting when old scfi ideas become reality.
I'm really wondering how they plan to fix how frequently heat shield tiles fall off.
Maybe those thick wall on the other side of flame trench will allow test stand to roll over the trench for firing but over solid ground for work on ships
Glad you guys explained the origin of the "Argo" name, I would have assumed it was named after the Argo of Greek mythology.
Superb info and presentation...! Only SpaceX is learning how to handle the most Powerful Rocket in the World. Iterative design/adaption is THE way to go. If you are a betting person, your money is Safe with SpaceX...! They will work out how to perfect Starship..! Cheers WAI.
+1 engagement for that stargate clip.
Booster 4’s mission might not be over quite yet. SpaceX will likely use the metal to build another booster. Perhaps Booster 4 isn’t done yet. It’s just getting very big upgrade.
It has been out there and rusting for ≈2 years. While it would be cool I doubt they’ll do it.
I'm sure it'll become a Cybertruck soon enough.
(granted, after likely being melted and reformed back into new sheeting)
im worried about the longevity and safety of the tower chopstick cable, it was glowing and sparks shooting off it in flight 3, and with no backup cable, and it hasnt been replaced or inspected as far as i know it would be a good idea to have some sort of redundancey or some kinda brakes or way to lock it down instead of relying on the drawworks to hold it the pads it sits on at the bottom
B4: Not so rapid disassembly Instead of a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly (RUD), how about a Methodical Scheduled Destruction (MSD)? 🙂
"Undignified Recycling Procedure"
Didn't roll off the tongue as well as _RUD,_ but _ERP_ at least won't be confusing like someone errantly saying _"MiSseD"_ 😅
Although, admittedly, one *could* say _"She'll soon be MSD (missed)", or similar.... 😊
SpaceX seems finnaly adopting a flame deflector, at least for testing . They also took a long time before using water deluge. It is a mystery to me why they have not done for Starship what almost everybody have been using for decades: flame deflector and water deluge at liftoff.
Same but also not. The reason behind this strange behaviour is simple. They want to question every detail. Is this needed? And if, can it be done more efficiently? They go at it very open minded.
Yes, but they paid a heavy price for that. Another thing is the absurd closeness of tanks to the launching pad. A lot of damage was caused on them by liftoff debris. Just common sense would have avoided that.
What about putting a clear coat around the heat tiles to try and stop them from breaking up. Kind of like ceramic bathroom tiles that some require a clear coat to seal the grout? Just throwing it out there. Also, great job on the re-light footage... But will it work in its purposed fashion? I guess we will al have to see.
Thanks for another great episode. I look forward to every one.
- NOM
prayer are with you and the WAI team it will never be the same without booster 4 !!!
Cheers keep up the good work ^^
Herzlichen Dank aus der Schweiz!
The Argo was also Jason's super fast ship of greek mythology fame (Jason and the Argonauts).
For events that are likely to happen between the recording and the publishing of this video, you could already record a segment saying that they already happened, and cut this segment out if it hasn't happened yet
ARGO- My first thought is Jason and the Argo-naughts
Stargate reference awesome
Hi TJ. Good to see you mate
Argos is also an ancient Greek work for the sea. Many ships have carried that name over the centuries. Argonauts were seafarers, and is related to where we get the name astronaut, star-farers..
What about, ARGUS..👁
Tower to set prototypes over the trench and practice landing
Wueeh another TJ video 🙂 Has been a while!
This presenter is fantastic!
Obsolescence is not just cover for lack of political will or commitment. Parts like chips get discontinued and sometimes replacement, board re-design and re-qualification is prohibitively expensive. When left with the choice to pay the bill sometimes the customer looks to something new. Love the show and space coverage. Take care!
base opposite side of the fire trench might be a base for a mini tower to drop starship on top of the fire trench instead of relying on a crane
With v2 n v3 starships being bigger will there be more stages for mechazilas
SpaceX should build a mini-mechazilla for the Starship test stand
Onward and Upward SpaceX… take us there 🚀
What’s insane is grieving over scrap.
Finally using a diverter. Should have done that from the beginning
What is a good place to watch the next launch closer the better? Plan on flying in Texas to watch it
wow things are moving so fast better and better every day keep on with the future
Next month please 😅
Have they identified what caused the problems with IFT3 yet (booster oscillation close to sea level and starship tumbling during re-entry?)
Wall on side will get a second on the other side and will become a trolly bridge crane to lift ships and move them onto the stand.
Thanks for sharing your videos. Good job with the presentation. With so many companies looking to build a second stage I’m surprised that Elon doesn’t see falcon 9 boosters as a turnkey product. You come up with the launch and recovery facilities SpaceX supplies the training and first stage. Your on your own for the second stage. Seems like it would generate extra revenue for SpaceX since they aren’t exactly building new boosters every day since they really don’t need them. They are already launching at a good pace expanding as they are able. As long as they price them high enough to not be undercut. I would think the more they make the better for economies of scale
It is also possible Argo might be in reference to the ship, the Argo, from the Greek mythology story about Jason and the Argonauts.
Quick question: Why is that post about RFA's Argo at 16:05 from SpaceX?
I think that OLIT 2 and Launch Mount will incorporate what they've learned from the Original and then the Original Launch Mount will either be rebuilt or scrapped and a new one built. Just my opinion.
That's exactly what Elon is presenting
why doesnt spaceX use a rail system instead of the STP thingy. (once the bay-pad paths are established at least)
4:48 is the stainless steel booster 4 actually rusty??
lets hope they get it right this time on re entry ( pointy end down ) lol
TJ is so cute! 😊 Shows up more! Great voice and pace❤
I think there will be little "launch" tower to lift ships at Messies :D (I don't know if I wrote it correctly) :D
1st WAI video I have watched all the way through not skipping anything. Hope this isnt a one and done for this host.
I think we should also mention another reference (the legendary one) for Argo ship naming. From wiki: In Greek mythology the Argo (/ˈɑːrɡoʊ/; in Greek: Ἀργώ) was a ship built with the help of the gods that Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Iolcos to Colchis to retrieve the Golden Fleece.
love the channel
The slant the rocket makes is to help it avoid hitting the tower. The Saturn V did the same thing (the crew would radio "the yaw is in" when this happened)
Most likely because this is the early launches and they don't want the vehicle to fall back to the pad. Once they're confident, they should abandoned this maneuver
16:06 I very much doubt that was a spacex tweet...
I noticed WAI tends to mess up the author of the tweet very often in their videos, somehow
April would be mind blowingly fast, I'm calling mid May, hoping to be proved wrong.
May the forth (be with you) is my wish. 😊
I'm wondering if that extra bit of foundation sticking off the back of the flame diversion trench is for test equipment mounting, or possibly even to spread the load of the pad across more surface area. Those rockets produce their own earthquakes after all, so they may be concerned with soil liquefaction altering the angle of the pad over time.
