Iwata saving another game franchise? Man, that man did some much good for the world.
May his soul Rest In Peace.
I don't know why Nintendo refuses to translate Mother 3. An Earthbound Trilogy collection for Switch would sell millions.
I wholeheartedly agree!
Its because of the engine that mother 3 is using, it only supports the japanese language. Making the engine support the english language would require someone to modify the source code of the game and rework everything related to how fonts and texts are working, sadly its not gonna happen.
Its more possible that nintendo makes a new engine for a mother trilogy.
Theres a looooot of pop culture references, And im pretty sure that had something to do with it
@@leeroynewman i'm not saying you're wrong, in fact i actually believe this is the most plausible reason for mother 3 not coming to the west. this makes the most sense besides controversy etc, but what does that mean for fan translations? did they recreate the code?
I remember reading that Tomato had to put a LOT of work in to actually translate everything properly.
I just played Earthbound for the first time and i don't know why i didn't play it earlier in my life, such a beautiful game.
Yes it is! It’s my favorite for a reason :)
I mean, its wasn't the EASIEST thing to get until recently.
My story of playing Earthbound was in my SNES classic edition, shortly after I beat it, AVGN uploaded his review of it
Let's be real here, the hype for Mother 3's localization would be huge, but the fandom might be salty about how much it had to be changed to make that happy
That’s probably accurate
Next year is the 30th anniversary of the Mother series. I am hoping that in to celebrate, Nintendo will release a compilation with a localized version of Mother 3 on the Switch. The Mother fan base has grown significantly over the years and popularity of Undertale has increased interest, so a Mother anniversary compilation would sell fairly well in the West.
Oh man, that would be amaaaaaazing!
Omg is it you?! Thank you so much 🤞🤞🤞🤞
next year is the mother series 30th anniversary AND is year of the pig as in like porky
Calling it now, we just get the first game on Nintendo Switch Online
And Ninten for Smash Ultimate
Man Mother 3 is a trip, and easily my favorite. Sad boy hours
I’ve heard some people have weeped pretty hard during it hahaha

The mother’s series team got hurt and collapsed...
This game series is god darn amazing! I will always cherish this game forever! This is my favorite JRPG series!
I totally agree!
Mother 4 would be now a completely independent game, i know, it takes some time, but the rebrand its in process, we will hear news in january/february of the next year
It was always an indie game; a fan indie game. The progress slowed down due to the lack of a larger team.
Also, I don't know if YOU know this... which you probably do... it's just a fangame, the way you adress it makes it sound like an official game.
@@aketsuuu When i m talking about independent, i mean like a separate game, not literally "indie"
@@aketsuuu Besides, if its a rebrand, its not a fangame anymore, a fangame its literally an alternative twist of an already existing game created by fans, with the rebrand, it would be a new thing, like undertale, who started like an earthbound hack, or at least the major inspiration came from that
@@MncMarcos eh, undertale did a lot different so it didn't seem like a direct copy and paste of earthbound. however, oddity still has the same childlike characters and artstyle, and at this point we can only assume it's doing nothing but being a mother fangame without mother attached to it's name.
@@wool578 that's called a Spiritual Successor.
they put Undertale on the switch which was inspired by mother but they can't be bothered to release the whole mother series.
Too focused on smash
(Dont get me wrong its a great game and its sakurais last smash bros game
But still.)
Smh
I honestly don't know either. There was such a hype around the Undertale but among the game's fans I could hardly find anyone who actually played any Mother game. If they invested soewhat more into advertising, Mother could become somethign great in the west too. On the other hand, it feels like Undertale is dead now. It sure lack a lot in graphics and content and perhaps it is the reason why. It was cool for some time but the hype eventually extinguished.
No correlation
@@Lonewulf321 Whut?
I first heard about this series since Brawl. Sakurai put so much reference to this series. I wish Sakurai can remake the EarthBound series just like he did Kid Icarus.
Sure
“Never ask me for anything again”

didn't sakurai actually make kid icarus or am I delusional
I actually respect Itoi a lot for not making further Mother games. Mother 3 is, in my opinion, the single greatest video game ever created. I don't think it could possibly be topped. He thus ended his series at it's absolute best, which allowed it to avoid the same fate of series such as Call of Duty. He chose to preserve the series' integrity rather than continue to cash in on it, and for that I am thankful.
For sure, it was the end of the story he had. It's best let it to rest. Although I wouldn't mind seeing a spin off game for the series, (Like what goes on with Giygas between Mother 1&2 or what Pork does between Mother 2&3) they could probably never live up to Mother 3.
When it comes to Mother 3, I've heard a rumor that someone over at the translation team or whatever came across the magipsies and decided to shelve the project, due to that being a potential controversy that Nintendo wants no part of.
If you think about it, that could be a blessing in disguise. The fan translation is PHENOMENAL as is. Nintendo allegedly doesn't have a good rep when it comes to localization. The best Nintendo could do is match the quality of the fan one, or do worse.
I'd believe that. I was just re-playing Mother 3 yesterday and finished chapter 3. It occured to me that Duster being called a moron over and over and Kumatora using curse words probably wouldn't be supported by Nintendo this day and age.
Nintendo is too much of a pushover when it comes to controversy and I thought I was too much of a pushover in general
They are transgendered and you know who our fellow Americans can be.
haven't played it, what are they? is it making fun of European gypsies?
@@TheWeedIsland nah they are transgendered
My introduction to the series has been smash ultimate. Ness seemed to be an obscure character. No one mained him because people pick there Nintendo favorites. Now I'm a Ness main and decided to look into where he came from. Glad I did.
Interestingly, the Halloween hack was done by Toby Fox of Undertale fame. You likely knew this already, but I was surprised you hadn't mentioned it. I've heard that the magypsies might be one reason the game hasn't been localized, but it's interesting that they still tease it and nod to it all the time.
Yeah I did know that, it’s pretty crazy! I would be supremely disappointed if that was the reason the game wasn’t localized! That’s nuts!
I heard one other reason Mother 3 wasn't localized was because of its heavy anti-capitalism theme; the Pigmasks, turning regular animals into Chimeras, stuff like that could've impacted their decision in why they didn't localize it
Tazmilly didn't even have money until porky's army show up, and there's even a scene in the game in which it's shown how money brings greed to people, almost shouting "CAPITALISM IS BAD".
@@planeta3059 The magypsies aren't human, nor do they have genders. And if it still bugs you, I don't think nintendo would put off localization because of Magypsies because all it would take would to either change all their sprites to be female(since their personalities are mostly feminine) or just change the script to not be as stereotypical, both of which wouldn't be all that hard to do from a game-making perspective.
@@doodgoi9102 I did mention that if they would localize M3, they would have to make some changes within the dialogues and sprites.
And honestly, them not being human in the game doesn't stop them from being stereotypes
We got Earthbound (Mother 2) and Earthbound Beginnings (Mother 1) on the Wii U Virtual Console. Even though Mother 3 never got an official localization, this is a significant victory for Earthbound/Mother fans worldwide!
Bought a SNES basically just to play Earthbound. No regrets! I beat DS2 in way less time time than I've played it so far and I'm like ' *TF* ?!'
People just accept that Mother 3 will never release in America when pigs fly the fact Nintendo has done nothing to take down the fan translation is all the proof you need that it’s NEVER going to happen.
Slight correction I mean it will release in America when pigs fly.
@@Mario87456 I recommend Eastward, Boot Hill Heroes and Bounties. They are Earthbound inspired.
If you like games on Steam there is Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass and Weirdlands, which also have a Earthbound/Mother 3 feel.

@@martinpiekarski1512 meh, I just love EarthBound to death and back.
Great video! I've got that flying man song that you kept playing as my ringtone, and hearing it throughout filled me with such anxiety! Oops!
It doesn't need a fourth game. Mother 3 gets an overseas release and this series is finished.
"out to pasture much too soon" I can't bring myself to watch further, it may be a great video but it's absolutely maddening that people don't understand that the series was finished not canned. A series finished with some sort of dignity remaining
Fun fact: Earthbound Beginnings or Mother 1 was originally supposed to have an official soundtrack release alongside it releasing in america. The translation of the game was never finished. If it was Mother could have been the first video game to ever have an official soundtrack release. That would've changed the industry.
Also I find it hysterical that on the page right after the Earthbound advertisement in Nintendo Power was the advertisement for Chrono Trigger! They couldn't have fucked up harder!
Mother 4 was rebranded to Oddity. It looks really good too.
@Leroy Jenkins Fuck what Itoi thinks!
Well, it had its conclusion. Like, a settled conclusion by its creator. However, Mother 3 still hasn't been released to the west...
Earthbound was my gateway drug to RPGs back in 1995, and a game that felt so vast it felt like how kids today feel about GTA or fallout
Earthbound US release came out the same month I was born. I have a starman tattoo and several physical versions of the game series. To say this game series is amazing is an understatement.
I'm pretty sure ness turned into a zombie in mother 3
essentially Itoi doesn't want to make another one

Three games were made. Itoi doesn't want to make another one. Video over.
Am I wrong to say this comment sounds a bit passive aggressive?
@@emptyglassbottles2555 It's true though, Itoi wanted to cap it off at a trilogy. I imagine he couldn't handle the stress of the video game industry, especially since Mother 3 initial development was hell.
@@thetadpoleprince2250
I mean, agreed.
I like to think he wants to avoid what Masahiro Sakurai dreaded. The constant milking of a personal IP by a monolith company, never ending marketing, pumping out merchandise and product. I would not wish to see that happen to the Mother series. Maybe Itoi wants to keep his child as a trilogy of amazing games that very few could even hold a candle to.
Imagine a Mother game that discusses the end of the world and transitions from the Mother franchise to the Kirby franchise
Yesterday I saw a box in my local retro game convention called earthbound zero
Oh man, was it real!?

The mother series is so good. I feel like it's so underappreciated even within the own fandom.

That's a real shame. I never was able to try out one of these games(except the 5 minutes demo of Earthbound in Smash 4). I heard these games are soooo good!
You can try emulating them or getting it the wii u, or the SNES classic, at least for earthbound anyway. They're all on the GBA I think and I think earthbound is also on the New 3Ds.
@@Zepumpkineater Well... I don't have a GBA, I don't know how to emulate a game and I only have a normal 3DS. However, I could try getting it on the wii u. Thanks for your ideas!
Doing everything to acknowledge Mother 3 here in the west except releasing the actual game is what Nintendo does best.
EDIT: and damn. what happened to that fan-made Mother 4 was tragic.
I'm a little out of the loop. What happened to Mother 4?
Its alive. Its called oddity now
Short answer... it concluded wonderfully with mother 3. If you haven't played it. Buy a translated cart or download it.
It's not that Nintendo hates the franchise, not by a long shot. I think they actively avoided Mother 3 for as long as they have because they would be at risk of getting tons of controversy in the west. There is so much in the game that would either need to be censored or removed completely and it would complicate things way too much. Of course they're expecting to get some backlash by the American public for a game that has the main antagonists resembling nazis, a group of nonbinary characters that can be taken as offensive towards lgbt people, one of the antagonists being dressed like a stereotypical Muslim, and you spending an entire chapter of the game playing as a monkey slave with uncensored footage depicting animal abuse. I'm sorry to say, but that stuff just wouldn't fly today without any problems. I love Mother 3 with every fiber of my being as it's one of my favorite games of all time, but I doubt very highly that we'll be getting a western release of it at least anytime soon.
Honestly one of the best takes I’ve seen on the subject
Also, you made a good point that Earthbound sold rather poorly in the west not only due to bad advertising but also because competition was so strong in '95 and '96 in rpg department. Those were some great days for rpg fans. As were the 90s overall for all gamers.
You said that you fight ducks when that never happens
There's also LISA: The Painful which was also inspired by Mother series. And there is a game called Oddventure which is in early development stage but has a strong earthbound vibe and simillar art-style.
“Come on Reggie, give us Mother 3!”
How about this? *throws a fireball*
Awe man, I havent even played this game but I hear so much about it. Really need to play.
What are you waiting for?!?!?!?! :)
Same here.
I have one and only one issue with itoi not wanting to make another mother game. Each of the mother games were his own interpretation of a dragon quest game.
Mother is dragon quest 2, with its three party members, its cryptic storytelling devices and its INSANE GRIND HEAVY finale.
Mother 2 is dragon quest 3, being a much more refines version of the previous game, four party members and its ambitious scope.
Mother 3 is dragon quest 4, with its chapter based story telling, revolving party members, personalized main antagonist, and more intimate story telling even having a revenge plot a central focus in one of the chapters.
The next logical mother game would have been dragon quest 5, easily one of the greatest games ever made. Imagine itois take on an earthbound protagonists starting off as a kid, growing into adulthood, getting married and having his own ness like son to help save the world.
Considering that Nintendo has so blatantly refused to translate Mother 3 to English, I am more than happy to use less than legal means to play such a great game. It really is Nintendo's loss (sales and fan wise) that they refuse to do it.
Can't believe I missed this growing up!! Almost....sad...
12:53 something he didn't mention is that this Halloween hack was made by Toby Fox, the same guy who created Undertale.
Lisa reminded me way more of the Mother series than Undertale did - it almost felt like a successor with its quirkiness and dark humor
Great video man! Nintendo needs to make a clay mation remake of all 3 in America. That'd be dope!
I picked up earthbound (M2) on the SNES classic and it was amazing! Very cool seeing the Pokemon influences in the game, and I can't believe that it wasn't expanded. It is definitely off-beat but that style makes it so memorable. Thanks for this video!
Development hell happened to the series, a five year development cycle back in the 90s was unheard of. Putting things in perspective Final Fantasy VI took just a little over a year to develop despite being quite a bit more complex mechanically. On top of Itoi not having much to do with game development in the past 15 years and Nintnedo unlikely to do anything Mother related without him. This is on top of the original developer APE becoming Creatures inc. when they switched over to Pokemon.
I've sadly only played about 1/4 of Earthbound myself but it was an amazing game though! This is a great video man.
Thanks! I had a lot of fun making it
What would be really cool is if they don’t release a translated Mother 3 then they would make Earthbound HD and make it a 3D graphic game kinda like the link’s awakening situation on switch
Lets all pray a miracle happens and we have a new earthbound game for switch
Omori. Just came here to say play it if you want something similar to EB!
Mother 4 should do a Sonic Mania and become official.
You did not mention Mother 1 rereleasing worldwide as Earthbound Beginnings. This is quite a huge point when considering possible localization of Mother Games.
With a release in 2015 not being far away yet
I got into earthbound by asking one question while looking at the trophy gallery in melee and that question was "wtf is a earthbound"? Then in my curiosity i look at chuggaconroys full walk through and i was hooked
Actually Mother 4 is now known as Oddity. And even though it is rebranded, I'm sure it's still going to have the same 'Mother' atmosphere to it. After all, it was primarily intended to be another Mother game. And more with western lcoalization of Mother 3 I am actually concerned with this game. As for Mother 3, with english patch easily accessible, I don't see a big problem of lack of localization. Maybe the fact that perhaps more people would know and talk about the game if it was localized.
Yeah, this video was made prior to the rebrand. I'm planning on making a video about it in the near future.
@@PressStartToContinueYT Yeah, the new title was announced around the beginning of this year. But unfortunately, there has not been any news about the game since then. Hopefully they will reveal something new soon.
The advance wars series comes to mind when I think of dead franchises. its not impossible for a new game to come out, but at this point it seems very unlikely.
Development for Mother 4 started in 2008. It is currently 2019, I feel like this game will never come out.
Favorite game series that was ended too soon? Definitely gotta give that to Dead Space. With Dead Space 3 ending on a cliffhanger and EA shutting down Visceral Games shortly after, it's heartwrenching to think that it's highly possible the series is completely dead. One of my all-time favorites :(

Sadly I feel that if iwata was alive he would’ve made this mother series situation into fruition and give what the fans wanted. I doubt that Nintendo isn’t keeping check with the developers that made the series and possibly Nintendo themselves are busy with their own IPs in order to sell more switches but i guess we’ll see what happens.

EarthBound is turning 30 this year
This and Psychonauts has sequels we're not sure we're ever getting.
I think one of the main reasons for Nintendo not releasing Mother 3 in the West is because of streotypes. The game was made in the early 2000s where so many people would get offended today.
Duster and Jeff (and Loid) are compared because of their ability to use character specific weapons. Sure they differ from game to game. Loid actually had more direct damage, pseudo-psi weapons. Jeff had weapons of mass destruction and indirect battle influences. Duster focuses on making enemies unable to attack or debuffing their stats. Technically, there are no items in M3 that only one character can use IIRC
Now for the PK Beam r/PK Fire Omega of Ana OHKO thing, someone brought up PK Flash. Yes Ness and co. were vulnerable to PK Flash, but you cannot really have PK Flash speak for PK Beam r/Fire Omega. If you want to think of it that way, then technically, Ana would destroy everyone's party ever even if they all ganged up on her. The only way to have any resistance to PK Beam r is to have a MOTHER Franklin badge. The Franklins badges of each game are different. Mother reflects a OHKO attack, M2 is a flexible PKT reflecting item, and in M3, it's a more static item that reflects PKT and the intense bolt of lightning.
Paula: 80
Ana: 150 One-hundred frickin fifty. Almost twice as much as a maxed out Paula.
Kumatora: , 210 but not as good pcy wise Kumatora's slow anyways, she wont compare.
So since Ana goes first, and Paula and Kumatora lock Mother Franklin badges, she'll OHKO them instantly. This means Ana is top tier in the female PSI user categorytl;dr: With battle items, Ninten. Without battle items, most of ninten beats ness and lucus
Ninten's max Offense is 303 (in Mother 1, equipment can push the stat counter over 255. This is not true in EB or M3). Ness's max defense is 241.
EDIT: I forgot equipment and items.
Adding Ness's equipment, his max Defense becomes 241. This is way better than 51, but he is still likely going to get 2HKOed by Ninten after OffenseUp. Yikes, and this is still not considering the chance of SMASH attacks. Who said Ninten doesn't have any Offensive PSI? His OffenseUp is so broken that it should be considered an Offensive PSI!
As for battle items; if they are allowed, I think Ninten gains the upper hand due to how over powered he is
For Lucas, he gets the Shield Snatcher. This can potentially work against Ninten's PowerShield (there is no in-game way to test if PowerShield can be broken, this is unlike the other type of shield in that game, PSI Shield).
Let's just assume it works, meaning it will remove the PowerShield 100% of the time. Lucas is slower than Ninten though, so he won't really be able to stop Ninten from just setting up another, and PowerShield only costs 9 PP (yeah, that's right, this broken move only costs NINE). With Ropes eating up Lucas's turns, I really don't think wasting a chance to move on an action that only costs your enemy 9 PP is exactly ideal.
The other notable item Lucas gets is the 7 Mementos, which act as full revives when he gets KOed. This basically guarantees he wins vs Ness. Against Ninten, I don't think it'll change much, because Lucas still has to get an attack in, and he will use up those 7 Revives very quickly, since he is getting 2HKOed or even OKHOed if he is critted (not that unlikely, due to Ninten's max stats).
As for Ness, he also has a way to break Ninten's PowerShield, using the Shield killer (again, assuming it works across games). Ness's base luck is just high enough to make it 100% effective (he has equipment boosting his stats too). However, like Lucas, I'm not sure breaking a shield when you're being undersped and getting wobbled is exactly a good use of your move. Especially more so since Ness doesn't really get anything out of breaking Ninten's PowerShield since he can't really kill him with direct damage, as we already discussed, and is better off running pk flash u if it works the Franklin badge reflectsit back to nesswho whole team dies or nintenjust Ohkos him with 610 offside so qudrobling ness
Sadly for Ness, I don't really think he gets any other items that are worth mentioning (I can't remember if Earthbound has self-Revives in the same way that Mother 3 does). There are Super Plush Teddy Bears, but... yeah a player character is not stupid enough to target it, like the AI does. Lyoid does a little more than ness at 255 just as ninten bu ninten will reflect it it if it's an instant kill mother 1 Franklin defends against anything that instantly kills so ana and ninten are immune not lyoid though also that mean ness and Lucas international teams die if it it hits It's Ninten for sure, he'd just never die between shield and the up spells.Well ninten is stats are 305 ofeivr 303 defense ness 255 and if you're lucky he stronger than lucus at also 255 ninten blocks all damage with power shield ninten can double his ofessive and defensive to be 610 defense 610 attack he does 4000 - to 7000 to most of the enemy's ness and Lucas faces every earthbound boss loses even gigas loses ninten obliterates gigas he actual over overpowers gigas by doing 7000 damage per swing the whole fight he can beate gigas without praying ana a cathiclicic so ana already praying ninten obliterates ness and Lucas and over powers them with even guts is 255 his every thing is cappedNinten, he is the only character in the entire franchise that is able to go through his entire journey alone.Ninten Franklin badge reflects any move that instantly kills even ana pk fire ultimate being reflected does notNinten has PowerShield, which is unbreakable and reflects 100% of all direct damage. He also has a very strong OffenseUp that should really just be considered an Offensive PSI itself. It increases Offense by 100% (by contrast, in EB its 6.25%). He also has much higher stats than Ness or Lucas, with 303 Offense, 303 Defense, and 255 Others (most importantly Speed, and these stats also give him natural immunity to status conditions).
Ness's Rockin is garbage. It has a miss chance based on speed comparison, and Ness is one of the slowest characters across the series. Against Ninten it has an 89.6% chance to miss. His PK Flash is the dangerous move, since it has a 3/8 chance of causing an instant KO.
Lucas's PK Love is way better than Ness's Rockin, even ness is flash is terrible can't do anything to Ninten before he gets 1-2 tapped. He can kill Ness in 2 hits though, which is great since he outspeeds Ness Ninten Franklin badge reflects any move that instantly kills even ana pk fire ultimate being reflected back at the initial user so no matter what mother 2 and 3 lose even flash u gets a reflected ana destroy as well she's faster and instantly kills the entire party of mother 2 and 3 though the Franklin badge even reflect pk fire ultimate in mother 1 in 2 and 3 it's the 1 that ninten and ana don't currently own it reflects pk thunder and ultra thunder so ness and Lucas are doomed lucus at least as 7 lives mess uses to much pcy ninten uses 9 and 14 out of 336 almost and only need two or to obliterates them so why also ana has pcy life up u and also knows power shield and also has a Franklin badge that protects and reflects any instantly killing move two people negated damage especially the one you need to be able to do damage to or you're dead since flash doesn't even work do to the Franklin badge and the seas pendent can go to Jeff since it's basically a pcy reflects only Franklin bade giving rest to all pcy even pk fire ultimate thoughstill lillis instantly itis o gigas which is pk flash ultimate in game mother 1 for lyoidsreflects which is why power shield doesn't work but pcy shield does against gigas because gigas does a percentage of hp like pk ground u for kumutora ecect it's 60 to 78 to 80 percent even at lv 99 you take 389 damage to 502 410 492 ninten takes 503 out o576 ana takes 410 out of 430 and lyoid 492 out of 530 new video lv 99 once I get 69 right almost 79Gigas from earthbound 100 k so is gigas from mother two porky from mother 2 and 3 porky dies from ninten with one ofessive up the grizzly bear destroys the neck with more and junano is more defensive than porky and a minie boss who has 70 percent chance to use pk fire ultimate and instant kill you ecect ninten ana because Franklin badge deflects any attack that instantly kills for mother 1 so nothing even pk fire ultimate is reflected though you still 99 percent and are left 2 or 3 to even 1 well lyoid dead so that means even 610 defense you still take 580 damage almost it takes 100 percent hp with pcy shieald b it takes 98 percent hp just like with gigas

I wish Reggie would get his act together and MAKE A FREAKING ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF MOTHER 3!!!
We kinda have Mother 4. It's called Undertale.
The way I see it, Cognitive Dissonance wasn't really hindered by being an RPG Maker game, but rather, it embraced RPG Maker and used it to its full potential, even if the program has its limits.
Of course, you can't make a battle system like EarthBound's or MOTHER 3's in it, but after the first chapter, the "RPG Maker Syndrome" of tedious and repetitive combat quickly fades away as you gain two new party members with their own unique strategies and abilities. Even as the characters acquire more new skills throughout the adventure, the only ones that are shared between multiple main party members are the PSI LifeUp/Healing lines which, coupled with each character's "unique options" and the diversity between different bosses' movepools, makes for some very strategic and engaging battles. This can occasionally lead to difficulty spikes, but those are still better than ones created by poor level-scaling.
There is also the sheer amount of content CogDis offers compared to other RPG Maker games, ranging from things like an item-crafting system and a sound test to secrets and sidequests that contribute to the game's replayability. Now and then, there are also segments that add a little spin to the gameplay and keep it from becoming repetitive, like Larice's solo segments, riding fast vehicles, trying to avoid the heat on Venus, or whenever Niiue briefly joins the party as the satisfyingly OP character. Despite a lot of these not being standard features for RPG Maker games, they were added.
The graphics, while limited to a small screen, still manage to give each area its own atmosphere (though the music also plays a part in this), and some of the cutscene animations are pretty impressive for RPG Maker. But what really stands out is all the little things, like the Gargiathan reaching out of the battle screen with its tentacles, seeing ships land on the Uranus platform from the overworld, or all the little objects and landmarks strewn about the solar system to help with navigation between the planets, from which you can see the amount of dedication that went into the project.
It saddens me that when people think about MOTHER series fangames, everybody's mind jumps straight to "Mother 4", something, while looking pretty and promising, nobody actually knows when it's going to be released, if at all, and under what name, and meanwhile, CogDis struggles with obscurity, despite its plot trying to tie many of the loose ends from MOTHER 1 and 2 (which it succeeds at, in my opinion) and still being very solid in terms of gameplay and presentation, even with the limitations the engine it was made in brings.
I think I know a reason why Nintendo won't translate mother 3, which to simply put is that they think that they don't need to. If you see in Brawl and every other game that references, they don't really explain who the characters from mother 3 are.(hell, even I didn't know who this 'Lucas' kid was in a Brawl) I think they know what this fan translation is and they don't feel to make their own translation of a game that we have been begging to have over in the west.
I'm gonna make the next Mother game some day soon. Some year soon to be more precise.
Hey, what happened to Elite Beat Agents for the Nintendo DS??
Wait
The mother games in a graphic style similar to the newest Pokémon Pokémon game on the switch
That would be great
Like, it would have an updated battle system, ie a health bar for the enemies and visible characters while keeping the rolling heath bar
Mother 1 - 2 - 3 = money
Nintendo : what?
I honestly feel like the game just ended because of the creator passing. I think Nintendo realized they couldn't recreate the kookiness of Iwata's mind.
itoi is the creator of the series, not iwata. iwata just helped mother 2 out of development hell + other things
Core L oh shit sorry man! I guess I got my facts wrong. Sorry about that
@@ItzWitherGamingMCAndMore that's okay! no need to say sorry.
Алексей Болидов No need to be rude brother!
Алексей Болидов Oh! I am very sorry if I took your words the wrong way! :)
I wish Nintendo would remake mother or earthbound in the claymation style like on the artwork and release Mother 3 in the states.
I'm just starting it, and it's awesome!!
happy 30th anniversary mother!
I'm two years late, but could you PLEASE consider doing a "What happened to" video on the StarTropics series? It has been 27 years since the last game in the series. Nintendo doesn't even bother acknowledging the series in Smash Bros. . .
That Thumbnail is Gorgeous!
The short answer is nothing. Itoi set out to make three games and he did. In an interview, he stated that if there were to be another game, he would prefer to be a player. I take that as "its in the hands of the fans now".
And yeah, you're right. 1995 was a stacked year for NA game releases. You didn't mention Yoshi's Island, Power Rangers games, and a few others. In retrospect, the ad campaign really did suck but it was also gross-out 90s era so that seemed to be a thin excuse. We will never know why the game never caught on at the time.
I forgot how big the Power Rangers games probably were back then, even if they aren't necessarily great games
The side scroller games were hit or miss but I remember playing the Fighting Edition a lot. Probably the only one that had good gameplay, good controls, and the street fighter special move system
_Millions of Mother fans celebrate as Reggie retires this April_
part of the many reasons why mother 3 won't be localized is well for a handful of reasons, warning for spoilers. I'm not responsible if you read further.
1. the magypsies: many an lgbt person misinterprets what the magypsies are as merely overly stereotypical trans/non-binary when thats far from the case, as a non-binary person myself i never saw them as offensive. they are the best traits of humanity, feminity, masculinity and just overal remind me of over the top drag queens. given how drag queens are the building blocks of the lgbt especially in japan, i can see thr inspiration from such.
2. the anti-capitalist messages and *pig masks salute/theme being somewhat inspired by the nazi's.*
3. *the point in the game where Lucas, Kumatora, Duster and thr dog(whos name i forgot)eat mushrooms which give them a high.*
the points i bolded? those i think are two very important points of why it wouldn't be localised, sure you could edit the pig masks salute but you cannot work around a kid and his rag tag team getting high off of mushrooms.
LISA is a great game for Earthbound fans.
Why? Because there's sooooo much dialogue and risqué content that wouldn't go over so well with Nintendo. EarthBound of all things was rated T in the US, and apart from 1 or 2 scenes the game was really only a bit unsettling. To put Mother 3 in that same position the localization would have to be butchered to all hell, and practically rewritten. Core elements of the game that can't really be removed
