When planning this build and dreaming of an escape to the life I was living at the time I found myself watching a lot of TH-cam videos of car and van conversions, and was so inspired by the way of life and how people live in such small vehicles full time.
I wanted to share my build and how I fit everything I need in, so it inspires others and hopefully helps if you’re planning a build or working out how to fit things into really small spaces!

So nice to see someone living simply. Too many van-life videos just seem over the top - by trying to be too luxurious. This video is great for people like me who want to enjoy the outdoors and not obsess with making things look perfect.
Thanks Simon 😁 Yeah I don't live in a van for all the luxuries of a house! I prefer spending more time outside and my wee home has forced me to do that whatever the weather 🤣 I am just about to build a bigger (van) home, but it'll still be pretty straightforward, stay tuned to see what I do with it 😁
@@SilvaontheRoad Good luck with the new van and kit out. I will be watching! I'm retiring soon and constantly looking at van life videos on You Tube. Most of them focus almost exclusively on the "van" and not "life" in the outdoors and nature due to having a van. So keep it up and keep bringing the virtues of life in a van for us to enjoy and envy!

I have a berlingo WAV that I use for an elderly relative, and I was thinking of doing a basic conversion for some camping in Ireland. Youve given me huge food for thought though Im 6ft so would need a different bed arrangement. But respect to you..great video.

You are amazing that you live in your van. I have just bought a berlingo and spent a week in it its been brilliant, but will need a heater for when it gets cold. I wont be living in it but I love to camp and go wild swimming. I wish I had buttons to open the back door will have to look into that for the future. I love my little van so much I took a friend to a retreat in Glastonbury we had such a laugh. I have called her Avalon or Ava for short as we spent out first trip in the Isle of Avalon!!! Lovely video. I will be watching more of your videos!! much love xx
Hi Aria, thanks so much for watching 💕 so awesome you have Ava 😄 the heater really is great for chilly evenings, I don't use it overnight but like going to bed all warm and toasty and being able to turn it on in the morning to help me get up! And the buttons are amazing - I use them so much ☺️ I think there's probably a video somewhere where someone installs some on a Berlingo if you want to do them for yours.

Thanks 😁 Seems to work, though there was no keeping the veg cool when it was really warm in the summer 😂 happy to have that sort of problem in Scotland though!

This is inspirational, I just found your channel... I have just bought an....okder berlingo. To spend more time showing my 4yo son more of the world. I'm a single parent and live in Surrey, England... I have bought plywood and things but haven't got everything else like insulation yet. We are going away for 2 nights over Easter with our Arpenaz Base M tent. And we love ikea!

A very neat presentation of a small home. I have the same freedom ahead of me and I'm building a Peugeot Partner van. Diesel 1.5l. You've got a lot of stuff on board. Question: Does the cable come directly from the solar panel to the 400W power source, without an intermediate box? The journey continues, my friend. Greetings from Helsinki, Finland ⛄ 🇫🇮
I have a Doblo, which is a similar size to your Berlingo, and I'm amazed at how much you have managed to fit into it! I am very disorganised so I could never live with that much stuff (after a couple of days it'd look like I was on my way to the dump or a car boot sale!) but, luckily, I'm only fitting mine out for day trips or maybe the odd overnight stay and to make it more comfortable for my dog. I'm going to put in a floor to level it out with flip up panels to access storage where the rear footwells were and then, at the back, I am fitting a dog ramp that will slide out from under the floor (in theory!) The one item of cabinetry will be a pre-made TV cabinet where I can store a portable loo, tea-making stuff, plate and cutlery, cool box and a mini washing up bowl.

I do cram a lot in 🤣 but I don't have anywhere else to put my stuff so it is kind of necessary! It does force me to (mostly) be a lot more tidy and organised than I was when I had a flat 🤣
Sounds like you have a great plan for your Doblo, hope it's coming along well 😁 my tap came from eBay and I've recently replaced it as it was leaking through the winter... The one I bought has already vanished but if you search for 'hand water pump tap' you should find something similar!
@@SilvaontheRoad 7 months on I've just rewatched this and I'm STILL amazed at how much you've fitted in!
My own build is now complete but I'm only using it as a day van for doing various fundraisers so I eschewed the idea of a sink and a cool box. I do have the all-important tea making facilities, toilet (IBS sufferer) and tons of room for a big bed for my dog (she's a greyhound so not exactly small!) I can utilise the back door clip to attach a long line for her so she can mill around outside or jump in to get back to her bed. I have covered some wooden herb planters in my favourite fabrics to store tea bags, wipes etc. plus some stock for fundraisers, I've gone for a riot of colour (lots of orange, pink and teal clashing with the red Doblo!) and a bohemian vibe, I'm really pleased with it!
Lots of amazing ideas. That last part, two buttons, was just a great ending. I'm stealing it ;-)

Thank-you. So many great ideas in there. I'm at the planning phase at the moment, not planning to live full time in mine, but looking to have something I can drive regularly and use instead of hotels &b&bs. Great inspiration.

I have a Berlingo too, with a single conversion from Chapel Motorhomes. You have so many of the same things in your van as I do! And yay for Marmite! I was wondering if I could live full time in mine and you’ve convinced me it’s possible. I’d love to know more about how you insulated it as mine doesn’t have any and gets cold really quickly, especially as I don’t have a heater until I’m on an EHU.
Oh I've seen pictures of their conversions and they look great! I pulled off most of my headlining to stuff insulation underneath. It was a bit of a rush before moving in so I didn't have time to film it but it was quite stressful trying not to let the headlining bend too much 🙈🤣
I don't know how much of a difference it makes - it's just my roof that I've done, and when it's really cold the van still ends up cold after a while!
It definitely makes a difference from cold rain on the roof and also reduces the sound from that, which I appreciate when the weather is being typically Scottish 😂
Please may you do a video of the boring things (sort of insurance needed for car camper conversion, where you are or aren't allowed to park ect)

I've just recently bought a Fiat Doblo which had been converted to a camper and love how this is compact enough to go anywhere a car can but you've always got your little home with you whenever you need it. I'm living in it full time now, was daunting before making the decision but every single day as I get more settled in I am enjoying the experience. It's awesome that you've moved into your Doblo - I might have to pick your brain on suitable park up spots in Devon as I'm headed down that way to see family in a couple of weeks (and will inevitably become restless if I stay in one spot too long) ☺️
@@SilvaontheRoad Hello Silva thanks for replying to my comment :). I'm spending a lot of time at the moment on Exmoor which kind of straddles the border between Somerset and Devon. I can always find somewhere to stop on the moor and in terms of shopping etc there is Barnstaple, Minehead and Tiverton. Devon is a bit different, but there are lots of areas around "Ivybridge" and "Ashburton" with quiet places. Also if you head to Dartmoor you'll find that wild camping is allowed and permitted in a lot of areas, you'll find a map online with those areas shaded. The advantage with Dartmoor is that it can be easily reached from any direction on either the A38 or the A30 which goes over the top of Dartmoor and then through "Okehampton" and "Tavistock". Feel free to give me a message on here if you want some further help as depending on which part of Devon you'll be going to there might be some better areas. Hope you have a good time and stay safe! Good to know about the online map for Dartmoor - I've been wondering what areas I could stay in there. My parents live in the South Hams and I have lots of friends in Plymouth so I'm usually somewhere along the south coast when I'm down, but might stick around for some exploring as it's usually a fair bit milder than Scotland in the middle of winter 🥶😂
@@SilvaontheRoad Wow that is quite a coincidence, I lived in Paignton since 2000 and only recently moved here to Exmoor so am very familiar with Torbay, Totnes and the South Hams. There's some lovely walks along the coast especially in Berry Head in Brixham as am sure you know. Plus there's some good holiday parks which are open all year round so if you want a "night of luxury" with a shower in the morning and electric hookup you'll have no problem finding one open even this time of year. If from Dartmouth you go through Stoke Fleming and onwards to Slaptop there's a stunning car park which runs right along the beach and the views are beautiful. The advantage doing it this time of year is that you'll have lots of places to choose from to park up and you'll be on your own as only the real hardy ones like us lot here on YT do this in the winter haha (maybe that should also include the line "crazy enough to" haha). I am thinking about heading to the Lake District soon as it's somewhere I've always wanted to visit. I hope you have a great time Kiki and keep yourself safe. All the best, Dan :)

Hiya oh my wonderful and cosy set up . I'm on the verge of converting my lingo . I'm in the deciding stage which way to go . I have seen some seemingly great set ups by professional companies ,but seems slightly impersonal to me and they don't seem to utilize the space in the same way . Especially under bed storage. I'm not very good at DIY at all ,but I think I will try myself . The only worry is solar and drilling holes in lingo . That definitely worries me . Thank you so much for videos . Thanks for watching Melanie 💚 yeah the professional builds are great I just never have the spare money to go that route - plus I think the main advantage of doing it yourself is you get the layout just how it works for you! Drilling holes in your vehicle is always scary - if you have someone with more drilling experience that you trust then get an extra pair of hands for it! That's what I've did with Silva and also with my new van ☺️

Was thinking of putting a flex solar panel for stealth and less holes now .Yes totally understand . I have an image how I want it to be that the professional set ups don't match and same here a bit of a pocket hit. Maybe I'm being less practical ,but a homely and comfortable feeling is my priority. Was thinking of chair bed ,but a permanent bed can have natural storage underneath. What I'm wrestling with lol . A Dispatch is a great size 👍🏻 enough space to be comfortable but still fits in everywhere and you should get good mileage from it. I have to say I've looked at them slightly tempted since living in a Berlingo ☺️ Hope you enjoy catching up on my videos 😁

Your old berlingo looks like the one I have now, I have a 2003 Multispace. Did you ever have engine issues?
Hi Sarah, my old one was a 2004 multispace so yeah probably the same model - I don't recall any major engine issues, just a slightly temperamental battery 😂 I definitely had some work done on it a few times but can't remember that far back to think what it was! The guy that bought it from me was still driving it last year so I think it's still going 😯

Thank you 💙 yeah, normal car / van insurance doesn't cover living in it full time so I had to get a specialist one - I'm with Adrian Flux and I think most people with self built campers go with them as they seem to be the only company that will insure us!

Oh nice, I had a small double mattress in my first Berlingo but wanted more storage space and a worktop when I was building this!
Would be great to know how your brother fitted those buttons for the boot .Also that black tube device that keeps the back hatch open how does that work ? ?
We pulled off the back panel and he connected some wires somehow 😂 not my area of expertise and it was before I had a TH-cam channel otherwise I'd have filmed it! I think I got the idea from another TH-cam video though so there is one out there that shared details of it. Thanks Linda! I haven't really travelled much yet, I usually stay in Scotland but I do head down to England sometimes... Hopefully more travel ahead later this year! I do a few things for work, including freelance photography and I have an Etsy store 😁

Thanks Jackie! How's it going with your Doblo camper? Yeah, certainly for living in a van full time you need different insurance, for part time you'd probably need to tell your insurance company and see if they'll cover it. I'm with Adrian Flux as they seem to be the only company that's willing to cover full-timers in a self converted camper 😯☺️
@@SilvaontheRoad Thank you for the reply I'm part-time so I will give my insurance a ring. The camper is great seeing loads of ideas and keep on changing the layout thank god I didn't fix the fittings :)
Hope they're good with the insurance 👍🏻 usually they just need to know about modifications. That's great that you didn't fix stuff so you can try out different layouts - I find you only figure out what works for you when you start using it!
I have converted my Vauxhall Combo. I believe the 'Jackery' is a great inverter power pack for all electrical needs.
The 100 Watt solar panel can be displayed across the dashboard.
Oh I bet a Combo makes a good camper! Yeah I hear great things about Jackery but I don't think they had a UK version out when I was sorting out power - plus I do like having my solar panels on the go all the time, charges my battery pack up without me noticing ☺️ I have 60W of solar on the roof now so that makes a big difference!
@@SilvaontheRoad Ive been using a handful of 12000mAh that a charge up from a friend's garage across a multiple plug adapter to charge them up fast.
I can sit in a weatherspoons with a 99p refillable coffee all morning charging them up too. They charge my phone and laptop for upto a week depending on how much I use them.
I will get the Jackery but not ready to part with the 700 pounds just yet.
That's great - are you living in your van full time? I made use of friends for charging stuff a lot in the winter months, especially because cafes and stuff weren't open!
Yeah the initial spend on bigger battery power is a bit of a shock to the bank balance 💸💸💸
@@SilvaontheRoad It's designed around me working and travelling. Parked SORN because of the previous lockdown on a friend's drive and I do use it ahead of me using it full time to make sure I got everything I need. Currently fixing up a Vespa and gathered all the correct camping gear to take with me.
The whole project is expensive but I expect I will be able to get it back when I start saving.
Yeah it's worth trying things out before going full time! I find life on the road a lot cheaper than when I had rent and a lot more bills to pay 👍🏻
I can tell you it works great and you'll never be cold unless you run out of fuel. But it doesn't use mutch fuel perhaps 2 liters diesel in 24 hours !!!
And then it will be atleast 18 centigreads what is perfect for sleeping in !!!!!
Yeah, I keep my fuel tank topped up in the winter so I don't have to worry about running out, I think the battery that powers it is more likely to run out first 🤣 it certainly makes it toasty warm in Silva 😁
You dont need to drive anywhere,... The car is a full adventure as self 😂😂

Hello, I also have a Berlingo camper and I am thinking about adding a diesel heater for winter excursions , do you find you need the heater in such a small van ?
Hi William, I think it really depends on what you're using the van for and how tolerant you are of the cold! If it's just the odd night or two then probably not, though the van will generally reach whatever the outside temp is overnight. I'm fine when I'm in bed under my winter duvet with thermals and hot water bottles, I used to use my heater more for the evenings when sitting in the van is super chilly but I didn't want to get into bed at 6! That and mornings... it's nice to take the chill off before getting out of bed!
Having said that my heater wasn't working for a good chunk of last winter and I survived! It just wasn't always fun and staying warm was a big focus of my day ☺️

Thanks 😄 I don't use a particular incense, just whatever cones I find that I like the smell of 😂 there's probably some that work better than others but I haven't really experimented!
Or you could instal a parking heather system that warms the interior off your car. For information about this system go to your local car parts store or Citroën dealer.

Yeah, it was silicone (SikaFlex EBT+ ) - they're pretty fixed on there and don't think they'll be coming off 🤣 so it works well!

Hi Mel, thanks for watching 😄 If I'm tucked away in the woods I mostly use my shovel and bag my toilet paper (I use compostable dog poo bags for this - and then bin it). I also use public toilets when possible! I do have an emergency toilet. I've only used it a couple of times but good to have in places where it's not possible to dig a hole! It's from Carplife - it folds down so doesn't take up too much space when under the bed. My mum bought it for me as she was worried about me not having one when I moved into the van in lockdown!! 😂
You've done a great job of fitting everything in! I'm planning a lonely trip around Europe and thought I had an original idea of using a commercial Peugeot Partner to be more stealth, and building a bed / seat / storage rig that can be removed. Apparently it's not an original idea at all. I was concerned that there wouldn't be enough room to live in one for a couple of months, then I saw your video and now I'm totally convinced. Such an awesome way to live!

I have a Peugeot Partner, i use for camping, for short trips, with my bike or kayak. But glad i have my home, for living. Good luck anyway.

I actually found it really useful to see what people have in their vans and how they store it all when I was looking into this way of life, which is why I shared how I do things! There's not much more to the 'furniture' than you see here, I'm still planning to do a video of how the middle seat and bed set up works but that's not been possible yet.
