    It's nice to know what this is called! Last year, my mouse had this happen to her while I was at work, and I was very lucky to have my roommate find her and spend hours nursing her back to health. These are really good tips on what to do, and I feel a lot more capable if I ever experience this again.

    I knew about torpor but not a whole lot on how to treat it other than just warming the mouse up, so this was very informative. I don't live in an especially cold area but this made me paranoid so I shredded up some extra tissue for my girls. This must've been a super scary experience, though! Thankfully my girls are all so noisy at this time of night that I can easily see that they're all awake :)

    Awesome video!💕 when a mouse of mine got torpor I made a “hot water bottle” by filling a sock with rice, tying the end, and putting it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds

      Yes, you can be a good mouse owner still have these issues. Good video. The sun helps to if not cold outside. If inside, stand by a heated window that has 🌞 Rub her between your hands and a blanket... there's a few ways...even warm water but start off with room temperature lol u just said it..

    So glad she recovered well and is okay! It's great that more people are addressing the issue of torpor, I once lost a mouse to it, and I just wish I was aware of what torpor was at the time to be able to save her. Thanks for making this video!

    My mouse was acting very slow, and was shivering. I had heard of torpors before so I watched this video, halfway through I realized my mouse likely was experiencing torpors. I used info from this video, and after about an hour or so he started to act more like himself again!
    Main take away from this video was he needed some warmer bedding, and warmer water (apples help too)
    Thank you so much for making this video, it may have saved my Olie's life!

    I know this video is older but thank you! I was so scared for my Julieta this morning, but I found your video as I was trying to warm her up and found out that’s exactly what it was! It only took me thankfully about an hour or so to get her back to normal and ferociously eating some eggs with her sisters but it was so scary as I’ve only just got them!
    Thanks so much!

    Omg. I'm a hamster owner and recently bought my first ever mouse on a whim and after 2 weeks this happened to him and I really thought he was about to die so I wanted to make his last moment s as comfortable as possible so I put him on a soft tiny bed I knitted and put that on top of a heating pad in my warm bedroom with an air cleaner and he ended up being fine. I was so confused by this cause I never had a single hamster act like that but thanks to your channel I'm learning proper mouse care and will have him stay in my room. (My bedroom is the warmest place in the house. The rest of the house is cold) ever since that happened about a week or 2 ago he now is my little baby (along with my 2 hamsters of course) and earned the name Arty and seems to respond to it. I love my son💙💙💙

    Thanks a lot for this. My gas heating switched off in the night and I had to deal with 3 of my 4 mice in torpor at 3am last night, extremely stressful. I didn't figure out that they were going through torpor until afterward when I was trying to research what had happened to them and came across this video. Very luckily I seem to have instinctively done basically everything you said to do in the scenario and they were all back feeling normal in about 45 mins of cuddling and feeding. Set up an electric heater near their cage for night times now and given them way more bedding too. Thanks so much for this video, it really put me at ease after a huge panic attack dealing with what I thought was 3 of my mice dying at the same time!

    I found my mouse (Yuki) last night still and cold and I gave him some honey bread as I only knew he need his energy. I thought he wasn't going make it the night so I woke up this morning and yukiwas worse, I put him in my shirt to try and warm him up but he did look like he was getting better, so I started to search for solutions on TH-cam and google, I searched for most of the morning and I was starting to feel like yuki was going to pass away, until I saw your video thumbnail and so I followed everything you did and I boiled some zucchini, Yukithen started to walk around and eat i was so happy and now I'm just waiting for him to fully recover. I'm so glad i found this video, it happened to my mouse few months ago, he was keeping his eyes shut, was trying to eat in a very weird/slow manner, and I was able to keep him in my hand and to pet him, which was unusual (he's a very active male who doesn't like to be petted) it was late so I called the emergency vet but she refused to see us because the tought it was unresponsible to spend 250 euros (i'm french) for an "animal who weight 20 grams" and she simply proposed to euthanize him... I fed him with applesauce, kept him warm in my hand and gave him water, fortunately he came back to his active and normal self and it never happened again. At least i know what it was now, thank you !

    Our apartment is always BOILING because were surrounded in every direction with people who also put their heating on at different times. Good for our energy bill though won't complain. However, the past week omg its so freezing I can understand how your house might have been a little colder than normal, I believe it was the coldest day since 2012 the other day. Thanks for the video, I don't have mice (so haven't done the research) but might have assumed they were dying and taken them out into the cold to go to the vets. Would have been so much worse!

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m still getting used to heating our house and finding a good medium between me getting too hot and the house not being cold, our downstairs bathroom is boiling but upstairs tends to get colder but it’s a lot warmer now! I’m surprised I haven’t been asked why I didn’t take her to a vet yet, despite them probably doing a similar thing to what I did, I can’t imagine having to take her out into the cold, into a cold car and drive the 30 minutes to the vets without a heat source for her 😩

  • @Myskitti
    @Myskitti ปีที่แล้ว

    Luckily i already knew of torpor because i just managed to catch one of my boys going into torpor 😢 strangely though, he went onto his "give me attention/snackos" perch, so i think he knew if i saw him that id take care of him? (Because every time i see him on that perch ill either scoop him up or give him a treat) since hes just about 2 years old i assumed it was normal ageing taking its toll, but as i was holding him and softly petting him, he got enough energy to crawl into my sleeve and got super warmed up in there and came out, not exactly good as new but way better shape than he was in before! I didnt know that the soft petting was actually something that helped until i just now watched this so i could get follow-up care figured out so im really glad i basically did exactly what needed go be done without wven knowing it! He still doesnt have an appetite though, and i cant get him to srink, so im gonna go source a tiny syringe now to make the water solution mentioned in the video

    Yikes! I am so glad I came across this video. Because of medication I take for cancer, I am always hot so I have my house temperature set at 63 degrees (17.22 Celsius). I recently captured a wild field mouse and just assumed that she was acclimated to the cold as it is often lower temperature than that outside. And while it is possible that she can withstand the cold, I just added more tissue to her hide and covered it with tin foil, to reflect her heat back to her, to be on the safe side. I hope to set up her new Prevue 528 cage tomorrow which will give her much more substrate to bury herself in if she does get cold.

    My Male mouse Jasper went into the stage of torpor 4 times, the 3rd time he was literally dead, I took a day off school in hopes I could bring him back, and lucky enough, I DID! I was so overjoyed and after the 4th time it happened I brought hil everywhere and at night gave him a heat mat. He really tamed up in that time too, I would put my hand almost a meter above the cage and he'd jump right on. He also had 1 litter of babies with one of my females. I still have those babies but Japser is no longer with me. He passed away at about 2 and a half years🤞💖

      I own 6 rats and those are usually scared rats just don't get them out and d9nt pick her/him up unless they come to you other them natural yogurt on a spoon and rub your hands on the bedding

    • @carolannegill9582

      Sit by the opening of their cage and talk to them in a soft voice. Offer healthy snacks like whole wheat dried bread pieces, fruits or veggies (check what’s safe for rats), millet, yogurt, scrambled eggs with the shell, and your hands to smell when they come near. When/if they start coming to you or venturing out of the cage put them inside your sweatshirt between the sweater and another shirt (they have sharp nails). This will help them recognize that you are safe, warm and trustworthy. It takes time to grow a bond with rats, especially those from a pet store where they don’t get much attention.

    • @katiebenfield9939
      @katiebenfield9939 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It took almost 3 months for me to be able to pick up my rats but what really helped was having them crawl into hoodies/blankets. My most skittish one loves burrowing in soft materials and such and it was a way to get them to come out of their cage and spend time with me without it being stressful!

    i have actually never heard of mice going through torpor, but since i’ve watched videos about torpor in hamsters, i assumed it could happen to most rodents, so i’ve been trying to keep my mouse as warm as possible. i give him tons of shredded toilet paper, and i try to keep him as comfortable as i possibly can. thankfully he’s never gone into torpor, even though it’s quite cold in my room most of the time. he sleeps under 6 inches of bedding and toilet paper (and he likes to sleep on top of his food😂)

    This happened to my rat once. I didn't know what torpor was, but i remember feeling my rat and being alarmed at how cold she was. I warmed her up with towels and and a hair dryer. She was okay in the end.

    For what its worth I'm living in Auckland New Zealand and its mid Summer 28 degrees and 95 % humidity in February so I am having the opposite problem - keeping my mice cool and watered

    My rats’ favorite nest in the winter is big pouches with sewn together layers of fleece and fabric and then they just chomp their way into the middle and pull in all the hay and bedding they want lol. They started doing it with the fleece liners and I decided it was easier to cater to it than to get them to stop going under the liners

    This video was extremely helpful! I just now realized this happened to my old mouse. I thought she was dead at the time ): so I unfortunately was unable to save her.

    This happened the very first night with my mouse. We ordered a cage but we had to wait a day so I took our biggest Tupperware and put alot of air holes in it with a knife but I guess they were too thin and wasn’t letting enough air in cause he seemed fine right before we went to sleep but the next morning he was dead. I thought he was definitely dead at least because he was freezing and not even his belly looked like it was moving. For some reason my first instinct was to hold him in my hand and kind of hug him with it and I was very sad I was tearing up a little because I thought I accidentally killed my mouse. But his belly started moving so I warmed him up more with my breath and his breath kept moving faster and faster an his eyes half opened and he started drunkenly walking around really slow until he got faster and faster until he was eventually normal. This all happened so fast it couldn’t have been more than 10 minutes tops but it felt even shorter than that. I’m so glad I didn’t just bury him. I think it increased our bond too because the first night he didn’t like being held but after this he’s been really comfortable with being in my hands and he trusts me now. In his mind, he doesn’t realize I accidentally almost killed him, I feel so stupid.

    Do you happen to know if unflavored Pedialyte works with mice to rehydrate? I know it is safe for hamsters but I'm not sure with mice.

      I don’t know sorry! But if it works for hamsters during torpor I think it would work for mice too!

    I'm worried I'll have the opposite problem with my rats, because I live in Australia & it gets up to 30°C.
