How to make a Cactus Terrarium

  • / liguusart (because they stole my plain Liguus name)
    This is the first episode of a few I have coming up about terrariums. This episode is mainly centered on building/designing the terrarium, going into everything from supplies, making soil layers, hardscaping, putting in a false bottom, planting cacti/succulents, and designing a final landscape with sand and smaller pebbles.
    This video didn't go too much into care aspects for a terrarium like this due to time restraints, and there will be a separate video about cactus/succulent terrarium care in the near future.
    If you are looking for lights for your terrarium I recommend you check these out (listed in order from ok (yescom) to really good (Viparspectra):
    Yescom 225 White panel: www.amazon.com...
    Sansi 36W: www.amazon.com...
    Sansi 70W: www.amazon.com...
    Viparspectra 300W (purple colored light): www.amazon.com...
    (These are not amazon affiliate links, I just use that website frequently to look for my own needs).

    I have to say this is one of the best cactus terrariums I have seen and I am totally inspired. I am making a terrarium as a house warming gift to my new neighbour and I chance upon your video for inspiration. Thank you for your video. Your creation is absolutely beautiful. Now, I have to go source my materials and that is a challenge :(

    thanks for this! Last year I did the same with a glass "flat" , meaning not a bowl, round large dish. I learned some nice landscape tricks from this video, you have a good talent for that. And I will be re-doing mine, I put too much water in mine last year, and the rocks in the drainage layer are 1/2 full of water, and turning green! So... I will be de-constructing it and re-doing it. watering will be using a spray bottle, on squirt position right around the root ball and not to let it drip too much into the drainage layer. thaniks again for this video!

    in these fish bowls / terrariums, has anybody ever tried drilling drain holes in them? also if you had problems with water seting in the bottom, I think a person could jest put a wick in it so the water would jest wick back to the top . might work if you over water.

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They sell special drill bits for glass so I'm sure it's possibly, it just depends on whether or not people want to take that extra step. I would not put a wicking system into the drainage layer though. It's there to catch the extra water and it will release it up to the soil through evaporation over time. If you add a wick the water will go right back into the soil immediately and make it wetter. Ideally the drainage layer is not supposed to retain much water in the first place, just a small bit if you water too heavy one day.

    Hello, are you able to control the growth? Will the cacti not outgrown the terrarium quickly? Thanks

    • @Carmen-oz3fx
      @Carmen-oz3fx ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do something called root pruning and take off some of the roots to slow growth

      Fernando Monterey California lava rocks we’re from petco. No the charcoal is not really essential in a drier terrarium like this

      I already bought the charcoal would it hurt to put some anyway? If so
      Then it would be on top of the gravel?

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s basically window screen but 100% plastic. They have it at most hardware stores if you ask around. I don’t even remember the actual name...I may have asked for window screen and just gave the same description I gave you. Sometimes if you ask for plastic mesh they show you a decent variety.

    What's with this terrarium now? Is it alive? I would like to see it now. In my experience, such terrariums are not practical in terms of watering though they look amazing. I think when you water plants on top, the sand will slip away, so in several months the look of the composition will be spoilt.

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The watering is annoying but since I have the ability to make a very fine spray the sand has held it's integrity so far.
