Ed is a wonderful old man and he looks fantastic for being 99 years old. I'm so happy he persevered and learned to read, while inspiring so many people to do the same. All the best to you, Ed!

What a lucky man he was to find Sophie Thompson, to see her cry when he reads, just tells you what she feels about helping people, maybe a story on her is in order also.

BRAVO! I've never seen a story so moving. Writing a daily paper years back about 40-year-old similarly covered, I shared a few relevant, pointedly critical thoughts about "functional" illiteracy.
    LITERACY BEGS ALL PAUSE
"Literacy," according to R. P. Blackmur, "is the form ignorance takes in a society subjected to universal education."
Although disagreeable, even arguable, Blackmur's definition has, like your front-page story last week, an arresting appeal. Literacy begs all pause. We readers are in your debt for the reminder of what it is we do and are. My thanks.
Lest we forget our ignorance, however, we might pause at literacy's definition. Blackmur helps. Ignorance is, universally and ironically, he suggests, an "ignoring" of real education, the education of selves in the sense of their "leading out."
I submit that functional illiterates led out of school to our current boundary line of failure only reveal our definition of success. Our failure now to produce folks who fill out forms or read signs is just that, our failure. We only miss what we call a target.
Clearly, we miss much. My hope is that in years to come when we air education's dirty laundry, we'll find souls merely confessing that poetry or the ways of persuasion passed them by. Though still taking courage, the confession would, for us all, not be embarrassing to read.

Great interview! I’m glad someone was able to help things “click.” In spite of making this comment on my phone, I agree with Ed. There’s nothing like being able to pick up a book and reading it. There’s no greater satisfaction than turning the last page. Maybe it has to do with that accomplishment thing!!

at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffet.

I I wonder what is his backstory maybe a has a learning disability maybe he has dyslexic that’s why he cannot learn to read . I wonder what was his childhood like growing up. Did he go to school. ? There is a reason why Ed is still alive at 99 years old.
