Jimmy and Chai have produced a film that has totally inspired me to step out of a life that has become stale by working all the time and to get back to the things that I forgot how much I loved and missed. I caught the film, "Solo" and...it scared the shit out of me. My palms were sweating; I white knuckled my armrest in the theater. And I'm a former guide on Rainier. FWIW: I'm an old guy, no longer doing it....but what I experienced in the film was....a kaleidoscope of emotions: FEAR, worry, hope, and ultimately....RELIEF...that Alex survived. It truly DESERVES the accolades received- and the great efforts of all concerned. KUDOS.

Chai is one of those people that i project perfection onto. I envy her way of living and seeing and experiencing life. She is brilliant. How do people BE like this? There are so many factors that make us all different in our aptitudes, tolerance, assertiveness, ability to manifest our lives how we imagine. I'm glad she is in the world for those of us who are not her!!!

Anyone could have directed this and it would have been great. The subject matter (Alex climb) is absolutely incredible and comes once in a lifetime. The Highwire camera crew deserves all the credit next to Alex. This Director made a grotesque speech when excepting the Oscar. The worst ever.... Absolutely self absorbed and disrespectful. Alex has some borderline personality issues and is non-emotional and introverted-which Is why he is so successful up there. So did she really need to poke fun of him with her, “the film would have been boring without you,” comment to his girlfriend? And even here, she finally mentioned Alex in 10 minutes of the 12 minute video. Just like the Oscars speech.....

I'm living in the Netherlands and our country is as flat as a cardboard, but please please please Hollywood, let this couple win an Oscar for Free Solo and don't let political prejudices drive the "Academy" to give the Oscar to some documentary with some "political statement" if you know what I mean. If the Academy can't see Free Solo is a unique once in a life time masterpiece (not only Alex Honnolds achievement, but also Chai and Jimmy's impossible amazing work in capturing in the way they did), they will make a fool of themselves for eternity.

Yes the cinematography really beautifully brought to life that thing Chai was talking about: Finding inspiration in the transitional moments, which just sounds like a bunch of words until you see it... The shots of her peering into the unknown with curiosity and wonder were inspired.

I think they wanted to humanize alex, and show how his passion for free soloing affects the relationships in his life including romantic ones. My understanding is they started working on free solo when he met his gf so they ended dating as the movie was being filmed. What an amazing interview, super inspiring as I figure out my own film career and which direction to go!
The biggest problem with the film is they only spent 20 minutes on the actual free solo of el Capitan. It should have been much longer.
Yes the film is not made specifically for climbers. It was made to document the achievement that took place. Different perspectives.

(would be nice if you actually credited the team who directed, shot, produced this) Why dont big companies give credit to the team that creates content like this? Yes the cinematography really beautifully brought to life that thing Chai was talking about: Finding inspiration in the transitional moments, which just sounds like a bunch of words until you see it... The shots of her peering into the unknown with curiosity and wonder were inspired.

An interesting interview and what a beautiful couple!
Alex climbed and Jimmy filmed it while climbing with Alex, I am not seeing her importance in this particular documentary.
Jimmy Chin is one lucky man! You seem to be the most vivacious, curious, artistic and extremely intelligent women I have heard speak in some time - Can't wait to see "Free Solo" I have been following ALex for a number of years, but to be honest with you, I truly hopes he hangs up his solo shoes for good now that he has accomplished as much as he has. He seems to also be such a genuine person and to hear of his death from soloing would really crush me as it would so many others that care for him, be it his close friends or people like myself who do not even know the fella, but in a way feel we do, as climbers and film makers.....anyway, love your work and look forward to seeing what your future projects unveil for all the world to see and learn from - peace from Canada!!

Watch the Oscars, she takes a huge step backwards. Having ambition and skill are fine, but when you are awarded for it and you seemingly forget that other people helped you along the way. Not so great. It was clearly about her.

The girlfriend parts of Free Solo were not my favourite.
I think they wanted to humanize alex, and show how his passion for free soloing affects the relationships in his life including romantic ones. My understanding is they started working on free solo when he met his gf so they ended dating as the movie was being filmed. Obviously there is something he likes about her coz it's been 3yrs and he said in a print interview he's thinking of marriage.
