Domestic abuse survivor Sally Challen speaks out on why she killed her husband and coercive control

- In 2010, Sally Challen battered her husband to death with a hammer after years of being psychologically and physically abused by him. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
He controlled every aspect of her life - refusing to let her keep her salary, belittling her appearance, and raping her. When she finally snapped, she spent nine years in prison for his murder. But in 2015 the law changed, making "coercive control" an offence. In a landmark case, in which she was supported by her two sons, Mrs Challen appealed her conviction and finally walked free in June this year. We've been talking to her about her experiences, and began by asking her to say what exactly coercive control meant.

I'm happy to judge someone whom I know chose to bring a hammer with them & used it repeatedly, not in self-defence.
I have experienced this form of abuse. Unfortunately it can't be reported to the police. But it's still abuse regardless.
Basically she took the law into her own hands because no one would/could help her
If the husband had been alive to legally defend himself, no doubt there would have been more coercive control during the legal proceedings. The abusive behavior doesn't stop on reporting, but can escalate and take other forms: stalking, lying, and stealing, etc. This type of person will continue to confabulate, intimidate, and deflect blame ruthlessly and relentlessly in court. Thankfully, her sons came forward to report incidents that supported her testimony. Many mean people manipulate and use children as pawns while smearing the whistleblower, alienating children from the other parent. People of viscous intent can and do create documents, have the judge sign, pressure the plaintiff into conceding while the plaintiff's attorney and judge don't fully know that underhanded tactics are subtly being deployed by the abuser defendent. The legal system in the U.S. must wake up to see the projections from the abuser towards the target(s) and believe the person reporting the abuse(s). The system dismisses/doesn't acknowledge and this must change to prevent re-victimization and protect innocent individuals, before murder occurs. It's imperative that everyone is aware of the insidious nature of cruel people, their guises, and the damage they mete out to punish - all of which it seems to affect lives and livelihood of mostly woman and children. INSIST on REAL JUSTICE. ⚖️
First hand witness to that. Just about everything you said. The system seems to enable the abuser. Not enough done to protect victims and their children. Children are used a pawns . System mulipulated. Drag on for years. Mental torture. It's to much. The abuse doesn't stop when you come out of the relationship. Go no contact etc. It doesn't stop. The court has to hold these people accountable. We are counting on them. What is the alternative? A woman like this one snaps. Courts , solicitors , cops need serious reboost in education on this. Its very hard on the victim cos how can a victim of any abuse heal if abuse is still going on? How can any open wond heal if someone keeps cutting it open? It doesn't, it cant. The wond will get infected and leave serious scars, deformed even. This is serious stuff. Mental torture is no picnic. Courts need to know the tools on how to depict and act accordingly to this type of abuse. And act fast!

This is one of the best summaries of what abusers do and how far the damage goes. The worst part of it all is how if affects and destroys children who are used as pawns. It's difficult to fathom how human beings can be so vile, poisonous, and viciously damaging.
@@joanofarcxxi Absolutely, I totally agree with you. When a women walks away from an abusive marriage, it is never the end. If there are children involved, minors and even adults, he will often claim parental alienation as his next tactic. For some reason our court system, in the UK too, actually jumps at this and many children have been put int the hands of a very abusive father. A recent BBC documentary - Mums on the Run - Failed by the Family Courts, shows how some mums have fled the UK because their children were handed to abusive partners by England and Wales' family court. They 'abducted' them and fled to Turkish-controlled northern Cyprus. As it is not recognised internationally as a state, they cannot be extradited from there, so it is a safe haven.

Coercive control is worse form of abuse. It takes your identity and soul away, you not longer remain the same person. At times you feel dead inside. And you will never know if you not experienced it.

Some of these comments are wild and I think that’s why coercive control is so dangerous because of the insidious nature of the abuse and how it chips away at a person. People can judge but until they experience it they will never understand the manipulation control and confusion this type of abuse brings… and no it’s not so simple to just walk away. That’s very easy to blame the victim. Black eyes and broken bones are easy to spot other forms of abuse are not don’t judge.
Women need to learn how to recognize narcissism in men and how to avoid them.
I was married to a narcissist for 21 years. He left me for his next victim. They didn't stay married. I'm sure he treated her like he did me. But, she freed me. And entrapped herself with a narcissist lier. She had no idea what she got herself into. And I wasn't going to warn her because he had control over her with his lies. Like he did me.
And I needed to be free. She deserved him , because she chased after him. Thank goodness..

Domestic violence abusers are society's most dangerous criminals. They aren't just a danger to their spouse, partner or family. They are a danger to everyone.
No question that long term CC, belittling, scapegoating, controlling, neglect, manipulation and infidelity causes personality change resulting from years of depression and stress. This ultimately leads to adaptation and self - defence mechanisms . In Sally's case she still loved him so the infidelity had an extreme impact upon her psychological state and stability. I hope she has found peace and happiness now.

Hold on a second. Why is this under “Women’s law” and why doesn’t it apply to men? Why do police ignore the fact controlling behaviour can apply to both sexes?
This is largely a women's and childhood abuse survivor's issue, generally. Women and people who have suffered prior trauma are more likely to get into abusive relationships than non-traumatised people. But still, that's not a mandate for this to be described as a women's only issue. I live in a household of three males cowed and intimidated by one woman. I'm unsure of how to move forward.
MrCool Mug well, I’m a male who was sexually abused by a female for a year and a half, I couldn’t talk to anyone about it as I was too afraid and my abuser is still at large, there’s no laws with me in mind, I also have Asperger’s Syndrome and anxiety, yet my government cut off support for mental health, so where’s the justice in that? Shall I label myself a female in order to receive help? Because I’ve lived my life just accepting whatever comes, but you know when you’ve been through that kind of abuse and have been in abused in relationships by several women, then a law like this comes into play, it’s not fair, I’m by no means sexist, I’m just telling you it’s not fair.

Or maybe the husbands were despicable and adulterous, cause these guys do exist as well. This is something I cannot know from one comment alone. She said she made bad choices in partners, which may be the cause of her ending up in those situations. At least she attempts to track the cause of her (supposed) bad choices, which is much better than blaming it on others and removing any type of responsibility. It's her responsibility to see how her choices and actions influenced or resulted in those situations and how she can improve her current situation. If she was a victim of child abuse, it is also her responsibility to get the trauma treated. I know many women who are controlling, but you're just making an assumption.

A quick check of his phone confirmed he’d just had a call from a number Sally knew belonged to Susan Wilce - a woman Richard had met through the networking site Dinner Dates…she asked Richard to explain the call. He replied: “Don’t question me.”

I was in a very coercive and times violent marriage for 20 years. I suffered from depression and took tablets for years. I eventually found the strength to walk out of our beautiful home into the wilderness. Divorced my husband I could never in a million bring a hammer in my bag and hit him over the head until he was dead.
I think you hit the nail on the head (no pun intended). There's no denying her abuse and that he seemed to be a complete arsehole, but to cave his skull in with a hammer is an extreme reaction. Find the strength to walk away from the situation, don't murder him. The verdict seems to be politically motivated.

He caught her downstairs naked on top of one of his neighbours, her excuse was she was so drunk she thought it was him. He's so messed up he believes her. She's even been looking at houses with her boss so she can move in with him and her kids. Is he justified in murdering her with a hammer? No, he should leave. I'm guessing you didn't murder you ex?

I'm disgusted by Cathy Newman's interview and her treatment of this convicted killer and I've commented elsewhere here with my views, but I do remember a case in England where a man very calculatedly killed his wife - he planned it methodically and then attempted to cover his tracks but he was convicted of manslaughter but only and got three years. Mitigating circumstances were her controlling and bullying behaviour of many years. I disagree with the leniency of his sentence. It should have been longer.
My ex was incredibly abusive towards me but if I murdered her with a hammer I would be in jail. Women are often incredibly abusive and another thing about these women is they always claim to be abused themselves as a cover and an excuse.

This lady has suffered beyond any limits as she felt dependent on him , safer in her own house which she made into a home. She had children there kept the home sane for children single handedly Must speak up and to many of their friends so that public insult may be looked down at by them . She should not have spent a moment in jail for trying to survive whatever was left of her after destruction of her soul by the despicable low life man . rather than kill the man, why not just leave. I mean it takes more courage to kill someone than to just walk away from them I suppose. Men are always advised to remove themselves from abusive women rather than react back but women are always excused for reacting abusively.

I accept coercive control is a real thing that leads to a breaking point. If you push someone to their limits for years you have to accept some responsibility for the consequences. It just doesn’t sit well with me that this wouldn’t work the other way round. If a man bludgeoned his wife to death with a hammer when she tried to leave him and claimed it was because she belittled his masculinity and self-esteem throughout their marriage, it just wouldn’t wash. If he said his wife had raped him, cheated on him and there had been a few occasions of violence I still think people would call him a monster.

In Spain, if a woman hits a man, it’s a misdemeanour, but if the man hits the partner back, he is convicted of serious crime, and his life is destroyed (unless you become a transsexual, then your treated as a woman, and it’s a misdemeanour, and you have the right if innocence until proven guilty.

Coercive control is a very real thing, HOWEVER..... they had split as a couple and he had found someone else and moved on.
During her police interview she said, and I quote verbatim: “If I couldn’t have him no one could.”
Now if a man had taken a hammer to his ex wife’s skull and repeatedly brought it down until he’d murdered her and said those words during an interview he’d be in prison for life with a minimum tariff of 20 years or so as someone with jealousy issues of that nature is quite rightly a danger to any future partner.
I know victims of serious domestic abuse, I know victims of insidious coercive control & while it can take a very long time for them to leave their abuser and years of therapy to rebuild their lives, their trust and their fragile sense of self worth they would never, EVER have committed a brutal act like this just because their abuser no longer wanted to be in a relationship with them.
This is a serious travesty of the protections that woman are afforded when in the clutches of an abuser.
I’m frankly disgusted that she is being flouted on TV as an abuse ‘survivor’. She is an abuser too but her victim is dead whilst she is praised for her bravery. It makes a mockery of all the victims out there both female and MALE and it is setting a rather dangerous precedent.

Domestic violence towards women is so integrated into the fabric of so many societies that the "punishment" for a woman breaking out and fighting for her rights which have been so denied--as assault, rape and daily abuse is "supposed" to be tolerated and if a woman kills her abuser that is deemed an absolute murder but it is absolute self-defense (in many cases). In the US, one of the US Capital insurrectionists just was handed an 8-month sentence for breaking into the capital. Another black male was handed a 20-year sentence for having voted a few months before his prison probation status would have been terminated. The injustice against the victims of men, especially white males, remains as a force of systematic racism embedded into so many of the dominant cultures on the planet.

They were not living together, she invited him over and had a hammer on her. She unexpectedly hit him with the hammer 20 times without him doing anything physicial. She subsequently stuffed his mouth and proceeded to wash the dishes. This is some of the context surrounding her killing her husband. Why would she have a hammer with her if she didn't consider the possibility of using it? Why did she invite him to her home if all she really did was kill him? If you want to include the context of abuse, it is based on her words. The person who supposedly abused her cannot even use words anymore because she killed him. As far as I'm concerned, you're acting like the simpleton.

She had wrote a letter saying she loved him and wanted to try again. He replied he would if she complied with his conditions. She agreed to conditions which were 'continue the divorce process and only take 200k settlement, to stop talking to people when they go out, to stop smoking, to not interrupt him when he is talking' she loved him so she agreed in the hopes they would work out their marriage, however after she agreed to his demands, he said he would only see her one day a week so he could see if she had changed. Actually watch more than an 8minute video before making judgements on what you have not taken the time on.

Thst just not true as wo men do not die each week in the UK so to say this happens equally amoung the sexes is simply not accurate.

Yes, it was a very strange interview - normally a convicted killer like her would have a challenging interview. For one thing none of the interviewees' allegations for e.g. that she was raped by here ex-husband were qualified by the interviewer. i was trying to think of this happening before and all I could think of was when the actor and broadcaster Danny Dyer interviewed Loyalist murderers and he was joshing and laughing with them.
