    Concerning the Fukigaeshi, the purpose of this part is indeed generally not well known. One of my martial arts teachers told me once they absorbed hits aiming for the temple zone, which is an usual target with pole weapons in japanese martial arts. Actually, it appears their original function was to protect the shikoro laces from being cut. And it's true that on older kabuto, fukigaeshi are much bigger and covering. On the kabuto shown in Brian's collection, they became literally vestigial.
    Nice Chochin kabuto too. Brian seems to be a connoisseur about japanese helmets.

    6:26 could be also Shimazu crest. For samurai from Shimazu clan. Does not really have to say he was christian as cross crests were used in japan before christians even arrived there for the first time.

      I was curious, so I looked into it.
      This is a variation of the "sujikai" family crest, called "Maru ni de sujikai" .
      It means "a diagonal crossbar whose tip protrudes outside the circle."
      The crest is based on a reinforcement placed diagonally between pillars of a building. Since the diagonal reinforcements prevent buildings from collapsing due to earthquakes and wind, the crest became a family crest in the sense of protecting the house and castle.
      Examples of "sujikai" family crests in use.
      Areas used : Kanagawa, Osaka, Fukushima
      Family used : Niwa, Matsuda, Hatano, etc.
      Warlords used : Niwa Nagahide, Niwa Nagashige, Matsuda Norihide

      @@スカシレコクサモナカ I guess that would be the case if its a X shape cross. I was saying Shimazu used basically same cross as christians like + shape cross. Since that was what was said in video. But if its X shape then you are correct.

    The purpose of the fukegaeshi wasn’t to protect the cording of the shikoro from being cut with a downward stroke that slid off the helmet.

    That momonari kabuto es definitely the most beautiful one in your collection.
    Love the shapes of the helmet but specially that mengu, looks very badass with those little teeth, and that style of moustache, slightly tilted upwards... Damn.

    Awesome video Brian! Very interesting stuff. I'm struck by the the similarity to German WWI and WWII helmets. I think the Aboshi "Court Cap" style helmet might have been used by the Alien that fought with Sigourney Weaver on screen ...? No? 😉 Okay, maybe not. Actually, I'm pretty sure he wasn't a Japanese Samurai space alien... but he still would've totally rocked one of those helmets.

    I would not consider a zunari as an unusual helmet. They became pretty standard during the sengoku era.

      @samuraijackoff5354 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s not true, most had spears or bows. Their Katana was a second hand weapon, something to use when you have nothing left to fight with or on a duel. Most people kept them safe because they were sharp but fragile to damage.
