And I said somewhere else now that she’s watched this, she must complete the trifecta and watch Predator and John Carpenter’s The Thing. For the latter she may want to bring a friend to watch with and she’d still have nightmares. But the reaction would be priceless.

@@puckarine Honestly would love for her to watch it alone, in the dark. Feel like that would give you the most genuine reaction. The Thing is amazing. Have you seen the remake as well?
The Evil Dead would be a good movie to watch as well. So creepy, yet corny all at once.

@@c.t.1893 you mean the one in 2011? I haven’t seen it, but I hear it was a prequel rather than a remake, so it’s not off the table. But given what she said here, if we want her to give a straight up horror movie a chance, she may have to do it on her terms. Maybe she has another jumpy friend who also hasn’t seen it. Also maybe let her get in a few happy ones first, so she doesn’t get desensitized too soon.

Is the scary part over???? Repear throughout the movie.
The cat represents pure evil. 1) Runs away, causing a crew member to look for it. Death ensues. Cat crouches under something and watches. Close up on those pitiless cat like eyes. 2) Ripley tries to escape in the pod and blow up 5he ship with the Alien left behind, but cat runs away and Ripley is forced to look for it, giving time for the Alien to get to the escape pod and hide. Hilarity ensues. 3) cat escapes hibernation chamber, resets navigation controls, therefore escape pod takes years to return, Ripley's daughter dies of old age. 4) Before going back to hibernation, cat takes a large dump in Ripley's chamber, causing Ripley unending nightmares on the way home. I will admit reasons 3 an 4 are speculative in nature, but as logical as this movie is.

Alien is one of the most perfect movies ever made. Perfect cast, perfect direction, perfect story, perfect score, etc... No CGI. Very hard to find flaws in it. And it's still good after all these years.
BTW, when the alien explodes out of Kane, Veronica Cartwright's (Lambert) reaction was authentic, she wasn't acting. A pressure line that sprayed blood shot blood right into her face and she legitimately freaked. I loved her character because her fear seems so real. Fantastic performance by everyone.

An interesting fact about Lambert’s death and the nature of what took place, the subject of where the aliens tail was going has always been one people wondered about. Turns out if you watch the second movie and view closely at Lambert’s file, you’ll discover she was transgender. The alien you can learn from various media has no eyes and relies on scent and sound fro most of its sensory skills when killing. People have wondered why the alien violated Lambert the way it did and some fans theorize that it sensed Lambert was different and the mutilation of her genital area may confirm the alien was interested in her anatomy and why she was unique compared to its other victims. This is just a fan theory but terrifying to think of.

Ridley Scott stated that both Ripley and Lambert were both originally cast as males, but decided to make them both females later on in the casting.
      Lambert was a female, period.
Do I need to explain what a female is to you?
Trans-whatever was not a thing till five minutes ago. It wasn't even a word in 1979.
What James Cameron wrote in her file in 1986 was just to make the character interesting. They were goofing around.
Ridley Scott himself has stated on camera that Lambert was sexually violated because she was a female. He raised the question of whether aliens have sexual urges. He said those exact words. The alien had grown inside a male.

The first time I seen Alien, I was 15. I snuck out of the house with two friends. When the movie was over the buses where done running for the night. The three of us had to walk home in the dark about 5 miles. On that journey we had to go through a large hobo area, in a railroad yard. To this day, that was the most terrifying walk in my life.

Ripley cant be compared with T2 (Sarah Connor) and Xena ; maybe with the Sarah Connor of T1.
Ripley isnt a ''hero'' , or ''strong'' by definition. She is only a ''deliverer'' of cargo. All of the crewmembers were only kind of ''truck-drivers of the future''. They weren't super strong, or super smart. They were guys like you and me - average guys... dirty... just minding their own small lifes .Thats why we can relate so much to these characters.
Ripley didnt really 'fought' this monster (at least not in Alien 1). She ran away... she was scared like hell (like all of us, and like all the crew members). And when she shoot in the end to the Alien it was much more a reflex ..as well when she opened the hatch in a moment of ''scared movement'' ...
It was sheer luck , that her instincts lead to 'win' that thing. All the others had also their survival instincts but because of the circumstances they losed their lives.
      Ripley was aware of that,...
She only tried to survive... thats all. There was no ''smart'' plan... The whole movie was about ''panicing'' and ''losing the mind'' in front of a superior creature.
Thats total different to Xena or Sarah Connor (T2). Sarah Connor (T2) is very focused and even protective about her son - she is a lion , with muscles, and weapons. Same goes for Xena.
Those are heros , like Wonderwoman, etc ....
Ripley (Alien 1) was intelligent, but also very female , and just with her own small life.
I like her that way ...
And Aliens (second part) portrays her much more like a hero... When she burns the eggs even if she dont have too. She isnt really afraid anymore ... instead she provokes the Alien Queen ''come, fight me''... Its the typical action movie...
And thats the reason, why Alien (1979) still has his unique charme - because its not like every other ''Alien-Action''-movie , or ''Hero-action-movie'' ... Its a kind of its own...

@@PygmalionFaciebat Because she developed as a character and she was still afraid as hell in the beginning, and everyone would piss their pants in the same situation, man or woman. Ripley was inherently stronger than Sarah connor, she was a Lieutenant and second in command in the Nostromo, military or not she was still trained in the basics. Sarah was just an ordinary young woman working as a waitress with no training and facing something that was superior but at the same time not beyond "familiarity"
It is also unreasonable to compare any of them to Xena considering she was a warrior princess.

    • @PygmalionFaciebat
      @PygmalionFaciebat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

She probably had some basic background about dangerous situations , in fact she had to be familiar with selfdestruction protocolls , decompression failures, handling a space suit, navigation, quarantene protocolls, etc etc..
As you pointed it out correct: Sarah was in that sense ''naked'' .. she was 16 (according to the movie), and had the most ordinary job possible. She also mentioned she even struggles to manage the balance on her credit cards - and she seems to live with her girlfriend in the same apartment. She really had to grow from scratch.
And yes - she is definetely not comparable with Xena , a warrior princess.

In 1980 I was seven years old. HBO was a new thing. Cable TV in my neighborhood was new. We got a cable hook up and Alien was playing on HBO that month. I had no idea what it was. Back then you could barely even tell the genre of movie before you started watching it. I remember getting to the part where the chest burster comes out before my mom got me the heck out of there and turned it off. I wasn’t exactly scared, but I was very interested in finding out what was going on in that movie. Many years later I was able to actually watch it.

One of the coolest horror movies ever. Imagine a humanoid and insect derivative with no remorse or feeling, just eating prey and having "babies".
The scene of leaving the Nostromo after landing to search for the source of the SOS, to me was so realistic and frightening. The static, the communication drop outs, the uncertainty of what is going on...
You are in for it, Popcorn.

And the design of the movie is great. One person designed the Nostromo, and another person designed the alien derelict so that the ships would look different. The alien derelict looks as if it was grown rather than built, with the ribs on the walls and the vaginal airlocks.

I first saw "the scene" when I was 9 and was terrified of it for years... now I'm a horror buff and Alien is one of my favorite movies. I'm in the process of writing a video essay and my script is already 20 pages... Listening to Cassie in the beginning expose herself as a complete normie makes me concerned for her mental health watching this... I didn't watch this movie in full until I was a well-seasoned horror buff, knowing "the scene" was coming and it was still terrifying... didn't watch it in theaters until the rerelease a couple of months ago and that's what sparked my obsession with it, still terrifying... wait until you find out what the movie's a thinly veiled metaphor for. Wait until you notice Ash say, "*Kane's son*". You won't sleep for weeks.

Fun fact: in the scene where they first discover the dead alien seated at the console, those were kids in spacesuits.
They did that so the entire set and the dead alien looked much larger than they actually were.

The terror you felt throughout the movie, is the terror us normal folk would probably be feeling in that circumstance. Ripley's ability to deal with that terror and navigate the ignorance, stupidity, deceit and also the Alien, is why she's firmly placed among the badasses in my pantheon of cinematic heroes.
