    hi,folks,i drove the mighty "mallard"over the Settle to Carlsle railway on 13/08/1988,,i was one of her last drivers before she was put to sleep in York museum,,john Anthony.

      And i thought i did well being allowed in the cab in Peterboro 1956. She was on an up stopper. Makes you wander how must is left on Mallard from new. Could be like Triggers broom Kudos to you John .

    Thanks for posting this. My Grandad was part of the team that built her in Doncaster. He was a riveter, pinning everything together. Unfortunately I never saw Mallard run but seen her a couple of times at the Railway Museum in York.

    As a small boy in 1957 I remember being pulled from York To Peterborough by 60022 Mallard.It was taken off the train there and replaced by 60033 Seagull.I shall never forget that day.We all had tea in the Restaurant car as a special treat with my Granny !!!

    To have ridden on the train behind Mallard up to Carlisle must have been a fantastic journey. It is a beautiful ride on the service run from Leeds to Carlisle. My German Shepard Sheba loved it, bless her. She could not stand road journeys but enjoyed travelling by rail.

    I once met the Mallard in person, close to the track as she glided along in the summer evening sun at Monckton Road, Wakefield. A very emotional moment. But how sad that so many other A4s were discarded and wrecked - terrible.

    I enjoyed this very much. At the time I lived in Leeds, and I went to see Mallard arrive in York from Marylebone at the end of her last run, before being 'put to sleep'. The light was stunning, am still very proud of one of my photos.
    This video shows how much times have changed - all those 35mm SLR cameras, these days it would be larger D-SLRs and phones. There would be tiny video cameras all over the engine, but there would still be the people (mostly chaps) recoding every milepost, though they might be using GPS these days.
    If I had known Mallard was running on the S&C I would have been one of the people watching up there. No Internet in those days either, to spread the word.

    One important reason for Mallard to be the fastest is the perfect design of it. And an important detail is the Kylchap exhaust system. Kylchap comes from Kylälä Chapelon. The real and original inventor was Ilkka Kylälä - a railwayman from Finland who invented the system. French Chapelon tuned it later. It is awesome that the loco was filmed here on the beautiful line.

    She holds the record that can NEVER be taken away from her!😊🇬🇧She is the Goddess of steam, she should be allowed out on the mainline more often so younger generations can see what true BRITISH ENGINEERING used to build......when we actually had heavy industry and innovation in the UK. When we joined Europe that was the end of the line for our industry. HURRAY for Mallard!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    This echoes a time when everything you held in your hand had a human touch. Things fit together and moved in unison from machines to people. There was still some mystery to the world but it was possible to learn of even distant lands from your own slice of the world. The shrill cry of the steam whistle is emblematic of that time where much of the world was explored but you had to go there for yourself and blaze a trail others had tread to truly understand for yourself. A journey for knowledge sake is much less justified now with internet, but perhaps there was some wisdom lost with the removal of stepping off the front step in the quest for knowledge

    One year earlier (1987); America’s Mallard was built. Of course in 1987, she was painted in a “greyhound graphite grey” in 2023, she would be bought by a Floridian, and driven from her previous home in Springfield TN, all to the way to a small city in northwest Florida. Three months after being brought to her new permanent home in Florida, America’s Mallard would receive the world famous Garter Blue coat. Now proudly owned by me, she is given loving care, she’s one of a kind, she is my baby.

    These days there are a few A4 Pacifics running regular service , which is good . They are proberably all capable of the 125mph mark , thats what they were built for .

      If you were to compare an A4 Pacific to a car, it's the Jaguar E Type if you're classic, and the Bugatti Veyron if you're modern.

    This is a very powerful locomotive even by American standards (we are more into pulling long freight trains up steep hills rather than speed) and yet it is all hand fired. What's that coal miner's song, '16 tons', that about what the fireman had to shovel to get this beauty to where it was going. A hard days work, and you had to come back tomorrow and do it all again.

    Beautiful. The line is very attractive to travel on in any ordinary train as well, let alone steam. Simply amazing scenery, friendly staff, well maintained stations, access to beautiful countryside. :)

    Having a bad day or feeling down? Just watch this! A great piece of history and filming (apart from the pop up cricket score...). It tells you what makes all Gricers tick. Even the characters are there. But it's Mallard and the S&C with sight and sount that does it. Superb...

    It's a shame that Mallard is no longer in her operating days anymore... She's was and still is a brilliant creation by the London Northeastern Railway company along with the other five surviving A4's. I enjoyed watching this.

      @@jmtrainz2582 What on earth, that is anything but preservation. Concrete is caustic and any moisture getting in there would cause it to brutally attack the boiler steel. Where did you hear about this? Because the only masonry at all would be the firebox arch, which Mallard would have originally had present and should still have in storage if not in its supports in the firebox.

    Thank you for posting! just got back from a gig where the steam train (Jessie) whistles in beside the market and drops off some passengers for a couple of hours...I grew up with the sound and the smell of steam...I love it it.....and strangely enough folks..it would appear that many others do the same! People not on the train, rush out to see the choo choo!! Red beans and rice from Kaapstad.

    . . . Australia went on to win by 210 runs making it 1-0 in the Ashes series.They went on to win the series 4-0 and retained the Ashes until 2005.

    Even more special than the 1988 footage is the pre-war stuff. The Silver Jubilee press run was special, but the footage of the Coronation was miraculous. I've never, ever seen that footage before. Thank you so much (even though this is a very late post!)

    Yeah, so much for national heritage these days. Some of us are trying feebly to do so on the west side of the pond. I noticed that the speed record is in mph. My heritage meets up with yours nearly 300 years ago. But, I'm aware and thankful.

      Btw, our American railroad history museums are quite speed limited except for a couple UP steamers that are less limited with a modern diesel electric double heading.
      It's nice to see a steamer allowed to really stretch its legs without diesel assist.

    Fantastic train, scenery and video from a time when Britain was British. Why would one want to go any faster for, with so much to see and enjoy? It's great to see people enjoying each other and the train experience, long before the hideous mobile phones, ubiquitous TV screens, obverbearing piped music, and just general ignorance of one another. I hope Mallard runs again instead of sitting in a museum.

      And it wasn't uncommon for the crew to cook their breakfast of bacon, sausages, eggs and toast on a cleaned firebox shovel. That is speaking for we commoners from the Antipodes.

    Last week I went to see Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 at Union Station in Ogden Utah. It was on its Headin' Home tour to Cheyenne, Wyoming where it will spend the next 5 years being restored to full working order.

    I personally think that LNER 4468 will steam again one day I think the pressure will get to the museum so bad that they will finally give in I know for her to run again she will need a heavy overhaul but it will be so worth it! People will come out by the hundreds to see her!

      Well with the 100th anniversary of both 4468's speed record & its entry to service only 18 years away now (2038), maybe a return could happen? They say she's mechanically sound & that it's the boiler that needs most work doing. Fingers crossed!

    The Pennsylvania RR T1 locomotives routinely touched 120mph, to the extent that their logs would include entries such as "rear truck rides rough above 120".

      Since there's no OFICIAL recording of PRR T1 going at 120 MPH,it's up to speculation to ever they did ir not,similar to City Of Truro

      @@davidantoniocamposbarros7528 There was not official record, that's true. But records of the T1's speed are more than speculation. Its speedometer maxed at 120 mph and there are driver records reporting effects "above 120". And observations recorded by the Frankling company (who made the valves):
      _Beyond the wheel slip, the valves began to fail in an unpredictable manner. Franklin had guaranteed the valves for continuous operation at 100 mph (161 km/h) and short bursts up to 125 mph (201 km/h). After inspecting every valve and scrutinizing numerous maintenance records, Franklin was no closer to discovering what was causing the failures. However, the majority of the valve failures occurred over a high-speed section of rail between Crestline, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Franklin sent an observer to secretly ride the route for a month and document the train’s activity. The observer’s log detailed some remarkable findings; the T1s were often operated in excess of 130 mph (209 km/h) to make up time. One train was clocked at 142 mph (229 km/h) over several miles. Even if this one calculation was done in error, the numerous times the T1 was calculated at over 130 mph (209 km/h) could not all be mistakes. The speedometer in the cab of the locomotive stopped at 120 mph (193 km/h)._

      Mallard wasn't totally free of problems. Just after the speed record was in the bag she ran a big end bearing on her middle cylinder and had to be shopped. The bearing was so troublesome that it was fitted with an aniseed "stink bomb" so if it overheated the crew would know about it.

    I wonder how many steam enthusiasts know that Mallard (and Nigel Gresley) up until the mid 1960s where both painted green?. Most people just assume they have always been blue. I have an A4 book which shows Mallard at Doncaster in 1962 in a dark green colour, but searching for photos of Mallard and Gresley online in their green liveries seems to draw a blank for some reason, maybe the photos that exist are copyrighted and are in a private collection. Another photo in this book shows Gresley at Crewe painted green on the 4th Aug 1966, 6 months after being withdrawn from British Railways. Most people seem to have an image of these locos running on the east coast line during the late 1960s when they watch shows like Heartbeat, but in reality hardly any steam loco would've been running during the latter half of the 60s on that line, but let's not spoil our sense of nostalgia hey? lol

    I have quite a few steam docs on tape recorded from the late 80s and early 90s, but don't seem to recall watching or taping this programme, no idea why as my dad was a big steam loco enthusiast and would've known about this being on TV.

      This was only ever shown once (at 3.35pm on BBC1 on Monday 10th July 1989), so it really is a rare one when it comes to steam documentaries 🚂
      Admittedly, it's not quite a full recording as the very start got accidentally recorded over - but it was still stopped just in time for near completion.

I have that series on tape from when it was repeated in about 1991; I think I have two of the same eps on different tapes, one of em maybe from the original 1988 broadcast. I don't remember the Seaside Trains series you mentioned, though I have alot of those rail docs which were shown during the Going Loco season on Channel 4 in Sept 1990. You don't know when ITV showed "On the Settle and Carlisle" documentary in about 1990?. Reason I ask is the recording I have at the very end there's an ITV logo shown which doesn't appear on the uploads I've seen on youtube (the youtube uploads I've seen seem to have come from a BBC broadcast). Apparently that documentary is from about 1983 and in the shown in the Border region, but strangely it was only until the early-mid 90s that it was shown on BBC1. Same with another rail programme, or rather a film, which was called "Fred the Steam Fugitive" which apparently was actually filmed in 1983 but oddly was only broadcast (as far as I know) for the first time during the Channel 4 Going Loco season. Apparently one of the actors who one of the engine died not long after it was made, so maybe that's the reason it took so long to be broadcast.

    In the past we were taken to London from Wakefield Kirkgate, on arrival at Kings Cross I was hoping to maybe see 'Mallard',and did not knowing until we got to the front of the train that in fact it had pulled us all the way. Also present were 'Sir Nigel Gresley and Sir Ralph Wedgewood'.

    mallard & union of south africa, should be rebuilt & if needed..given new boiler,s, i would much rather see these engine,s out on the lines all over the uk, & doing what they were built for, than sitting silent all polished up in some museum, the past generation (our ancestors) left us all sorts of marvelous machinery etc, & also lovely buildings, & all we have to do is maintain & look after them, but most of the time we fail to do just that.

    The Gresly 3-cylinder A4 pacifics used the Gresley/Holcroft conjugated valve gear to control steam admission to the inside cylinder, using lever action to derive the valve motion from the valve motion of the outside cylinders. The geometry of this system was imperfect and this factor, together with expansion problems as the cylinders heated up, meant that the inside cylinder produced more power than the outside ones. This caused excessive load on the inside big end bearing on the crank axle, which could and did lead to bearing failure.
    This problem was exacerbated in the 126 mph run when Driver Duddington flogged the locomotive by increasing the steam cut-off in the cylinders instead of the normal practice of reducing it. This increase in steam flow gave a temporary increase in power but caused the inside big end to fail. The engine had to be detached from the train and taken for repairs after the speed burst and before the end of the journey.
    In British Railways days this problem was solved by an engineer called, I think, Cooke, who was a Great Western man who improved the design of the inside big end and its lubrication.

    The NRM should restore Mallard to mainline condition. She's been out of action for nearly 30 years.

      I would love to see that I once asked a staff member in the NRM about it and he said chances of it happening are slim to none since there are 3 functioning A4s already in the UK. :(

      They're already working on Sir Nigel Gresley (which can be seen in one of my videos), Bittern is being overhauled at Crewe and Union of South Africa is the only one running and will be withdrawn next year when the boiler ticket expires. The other 3 (Mallard, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada) are static displays. Maybe the NRM will work on Mallard once Sir Nige has been done. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the speed record.

    I stayed in Harrogate, I am from Melbourne, Gippsland to the East is not unlike that country . I saw the line didn’t realise what its significance was.As with many places you go to you don’t realise the signifance of the line to TH-cam shows the Steam Engines there. It’s 1 of my favourite parts of England.I remember the water scoop on the Dad’s Army comedy show, young Frank Pyke telling Captain Mainwerring “ we are going to get wet” & they did. Never seen them before that.

    Steve if you have a look at TH-cam you will see that older locos of NSWGR have a similar appearance to GWR locos. This is because the chief mechanical engineer E E Lucy was an engineer with GWR prior to taking up the position with NSWGR in 1910. Most of the larger engines from 1930 onwards had an American flavour.

    Years back, the scotsman did a Tour of North America.. I realise the value keeps rising but these trains were meant to run.. would love to see Mallard, The Flying Scotsman & Nigel Gresley & others do a 2020 or 2021 or even 2022 or later.. Museums serve a purpose but if these engines don’t get out and breathe then museums become mausoleums..

      Why do we need to freight in a British engine when we have plenty of our own. N&W 611 could keep pace with Mallard up until the very top end of her throttle, being designed to run 100+ MPH as well.
      And we also have Nickel Plate 765, UP 844, UP 4014 "Big Boy" - the largest operational steam locomotive in the world, among many others if you want to see steam at speed.

    Did they move mallard from the science meuseum in london ? Used to visit there lots from 1964 to 1970... got back there in 2004 and did not see it have not got back since.

      The National Railway Museum moved from London to what was York's northern motive power depot in 1976, I think.

      That's a strange one...comment in the vision states it is a function of certification of the boiler. I take that to mean the boilers have to be inspected and tested and if not to specification they would need replacement. Given the status of the great machine it is hard to fathom why a reasonably simple job wouldn't be carried out. Boiler steels and fabricators are still available.

      Mallard was withdrawn & put back on display in York after her last run in August 1988 & hasn't run since. She'd need another overhaul to running order for her to return to steam.

      @@voidjavelin23 back in the 80s when she was restored the museum was being pansies and only wanted her to run for a limited time which was total bullshit. I think she only ran in the 80s for about 2 1/2 years if I remember that correctly, the last time she ran was 1988. She’s been sitting as a cold static display piece since then.

    Sadly, most of the clip is people sitting around and talking and looking out of windows. It's a great shame they didn't concentrate on the actual subject - the engine itself. Still, there are great views of it here and there if you wait long enough.

      Tannin . Being a passenger is much the same in any train, Mallard or a Pendolino. You can’t see the important bit, doing the important stuff. Better to watch it pass from a grassy knoll, and get the smell, or watch a vid like this and get the close-ups and heli-shots of the important bit doing the important stuff.
