Having watched jesus preform miracles, judas went to boast and laud jesus's virtues and abilities to the romans kind of like a challenge. The best interpretation method is to "let scripture interpret scripture". The biblical themes then emerge in their full depth and richness. For example, how can one understand Jesus' discussion on "living water" in the fourth chapter of John's gospel without knowing its temple imagery in the Old Testament and also its symbolism at the close of the book of Revelation? And how can one fully appreciate the indwelling of the Holy Spirit without a knowledge of temple theology? The themes of scripture carry through the entire bible with remarkable depth and clarity.

      That is kinda dangerous actually because it mostly leads to division of the truth, and without knowing the context or even the history of it, anyone can interpret the scriptures literally. The best answer would lead us back to the Church who has the supreme authority to interpret it. Because it is the Church that made the Bible and therefore should be the one who has the authority to bring us to the truth. Christ gave us His Church and through the Church birthed the sacred scriptures. Another thing is to see the scriptures on the lenses of the Church Fathers. They were one of the first and one of the founding members of the Church like the Apostles, so they have more right to say on what the stories of the bible are because we believe that all the knowledge and authority were handed over to them by the Apostles and disciples of Jesus. Ok

    The disciples asked Jesus, 'why do you speak in parables'? Jesus replied, 'the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you but not to them. Though seeing, they do not see, though hearing, they do not hear nor understand.'
    Jesus also said, 'No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'
    No matter how much academic prowess you think is needed to understand scriprure, in order to 'know' God, it is only by revelation of the Spirit of God that mankind can ever know and commune with Him.

    People often misinterpret scripture due to their pride. There's a big difference between human knowledge and divine wisdom. Many try to place themselves above God, which leads to misunderstandings of scripture, often requiring a scholar or false teachers to explain it. This is similar to the Pharisees and Sadducees who created barriers for others seeking God.
    True understanding of scripture comes through the Holy Spirit. If you genuinely seek God, insights and interpretations will be revealed to you, almost like a blind person gaining sight. Unfortunately, many interpret scripture based on their own desires rather than God's intentions. With patience, the right biblical interpretations will come to light in due time. No amount of speculation or artificial intelligence can grasp God's mind, as many only perceive the visible and miss the deeper, unseen truths.

      And this holds with all scriptures, all holy books, those who interpret have no place to interpret to begin with, due to the corruption of the synagogue, the church and the mosque, we now have 1 religion divided in 3 and each one thinks that the other is different than its own, and each thinks that its holds the truth while the others are false, because of the misinterpretation of the scripture by people who like you said are invaded by pride and those who are prideful are without a doubt ignorant and those who are ignorant are without a doubt dominated by darkness, so in conclusion it is darkness who deliberately uses those close to the prophets of god in order to prevert the meaning and then centuries go by with that misinterpretation giving us as a result the actual world we live in, but everything has a purpose, so this too was meant for something greater than what we can understand.

The participants include Catholic thinkers like Bishop Robert Barron, philosophers, and cultural commentators, but there is no indication of a panelist who explicitly identifies with evangelical or Reformed positions

    At the practical level, I would go with those individuals who have been sanctified by heeding the Gospel message. Whilst doctrine is obviously of crucial importance, it all hangs on knowing who it is (the Son of God) that we are to surrender to, and striving to match our daily actions to that calling.

    I'm sorry, Dr Peterson, but respectfully, I must say that I find this round table style of discussions hard to follow. I much prefer when you speak from your own thought process; to me it's more organic and there aren't a bunch of conflicting viewpoints that you're reacting to coming at you all at once. Still, the fact that you are thinking on this and analyzing this is essential in this day and age. You have helped me with your talks on responsibility, the Bible, and more, and I thank you.
    One final thing; I know this is a short clip, but as other people have commented, not talking about or acknowledging the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (Who is the One to lead people into understanding) is a huge missing element from the discussion. A church may be organized into a hierarchical structure to ease with administration and other things, but this is the Word of God that is being analyzed here. 2 Peter 1:20-21 says: 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. The Word of God MUST always be at the top of that hierarchy, not the organizational structure of the church.
    Thank you again for your personal dedication in all of this. May God continue to bless you and give you strength through your personal trials.

    For me, if there is a problem arising, it is not that they interpret the Bible in an intellectual manner itself. It is that they use their own principles, experience and philosophy. The Bible is like the pleasant melody of orchestra, no contradiction, no out of tone and all telling a great story. Meaning, it can answer its own question. So the loss in meaning is not misinterpreted in context only, sometimes it comes from not asking the right question and not finding the right answer inside the Bible itself.

    Here is the correct interpretation of the Gospels:
    That Almighty God became flesh, humbling Himself to be born of a virgin. He dwelt among us, lived a perfect life, and was crucified for our sins. On the third day He resurrected from the dead, that all who believe on Him should receive the gift of eternal life.

    I clicked so fast. This is the problem that actually unravels everything we believe in the west. It starts with the people schism in 1054. That led to the protestant reformation where individuals believe they could be their own pope. Which led to the enlightenment where people based the center of Epistemology in the reason,logic, and perception of the individual. Yes, individuals can obtain knowledge. But the aspect of hierarchy and tradition is absolutely crucial. Without hierarchy and tradition, you end up floating in a sea of delusion, where one person sees a square and the other a triangle

      If people earnestly seek Truth and there is Truth to be found, wouldn’t they end up meeting in the same place?
      Regardless of who told them what, if an individual genuinely seeks God then they will be brought to a series of revelations and exposure of their own self deception. It seems to me that the individual’s relationship to God is primary, I know many folks who go to church yet don’t read their own Bible but instead eat up what the pastor says.
      Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not against church as a whole, I’m just of the mind that a heart that seeks with humility and commitment is more important than being a part of a hierarchy and tradition (some of which are oppressive and gate keeping).

    • @jrhemmerich
      @jrhemmerich หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, there is an importance to hierarchy and tradition.
      But what you miss about Protestantism is that it is the affirmation of the centrality of the Apostolic tradition knowable in the scriptures, with Jesus being the cornerstone whom Moses predicted.
      The Protestant is a reformed catholic, who believes in a wider catholicity than the institution of a single hierarchy (the Roman one), because there is a deeper tradition and unity to be found in the Apostles.
      This tradition in scripture does not dispense with the collective efforts of the church (both the Roman, EO, and Reformed communities), but it attempts to place them on the right foundation-the Apostolic deposit in scripture and a fallible but reforming church, who lives humbly under the instruction of the Spirit.
      Something to consider in your analysis of the difficulties we face.

    I am so pleased to see this group meditating on and discussing the Word of God.
    However, all of you must approach the reasoning of the Word from a Blood Covenant stand point. Much of the scripture can lead you down numerous rabbit holes, but if you apply Blood Covenant dynamics, starting with the 15th Chapter of Genesis thru the Cross and the New Covenant you will understand the meaning of the Word much easier and clearer.
    2nd of all, you must, by Faith, allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the mysteries of the Word....supernaturally! From mysteries to wisdom only comes from the Holy Spirit which abides in the believer.
    You must pray and ask and expect knowledge from the Comforter. To exclude Him is to fall back into religion and traditions of theologies to finally, you can do nothing just as Christ could do very little in His own hometown.

He often wants to satisfy his own needs and curiosities. It distracts from the mission that Jordan has set for himself. Jordan is always have to bring the whole conversation back on track and it’s almost always a direct result of Dennis having derailed it in the first place. I believe Jon is the individual on the far right of table and he also is very selfish in wanting to relate everything to his own experience. You have to adjust your frame in order to gain significant insight. It would make all the difference in the world.

The Bible is very clear and precise with a lot of things especially what our Lord Jesus said and has done for us and will continue to do for those who are willing to see and to listen. Also most of the time, we humans tend to only start to trust in god when our version of "I AM" fails us, then we seek the real "I AM" as a last resort unfortunately as since we truly are prideful and ego centered.

    The key to unlocking the Bible is the Holy Spirit Himself.
    Those whose minds are darkened by their sin will never be able to understand what God is telling them.
    They will think they do. They will even speak on behalf of God’s Word (false prophets), but their minds and words have no power or authority.
    Those who have ears to hear will be able to hear.

      @lopezmt5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ - I really agree with what you share! Pride is such a great sin! To think we understand God’s Word on our own or by ourselves is a great snare to ourselves!
      Malachi 3:16, “Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name.”
      Proverbs 12:5, “The thoughts of the righteous are just;
      the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.”
      Proverbs 12:15, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
      but a wise man listens to advice.”
      1 Kings 12 is the story of King Rehoboam, who did not listen to the counsel of the “Old Men” that gave advice to Rehoboam’s father (King Solomon), but instead took the council of the young men.
      1 Kings 12:8, “But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.”
      Acts 17:10-13, “The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds.”
      We need to sharpen one another and temper our pride and learn from others. But counsel alone from “others” is not a true safeguard either.
      We must check everything against the Word of God and also the most Wonderful of all Counselors-the life and words of Jesus Himself.
      We should be “poor in spirit”. Humble and easily teachable and learn from others. Together we are much stronger and with the Holy Spirit and our Lord Jesus we can receive the guidance and understanding we need.
      Again thank you for your words. 😊

      You have this interesting idea that there should be only one "proper" denomination that has to be followed.

    I think this problem of bounding interpretation would be true if the text was purely symbolic or true only in the sense of describing human psychology. The Christian tradition of the Bible being a living text is that God sets bounds and uses the text to communicate clearly. I think it would be difficult to try and bound the meaning in the Bible purely from an extra-Christian perspective. Even the Catholic argument of the community keeping things in check is not good because the "community" has also gone off track many times in history.
    The Living Text argument I think I why the Bible has not gone off the rails. Which for me is a compelling argument as to why the Bible can only be fully understood if one believes there is a God directing the world. Truly. Not metaphorically or psychologically. Just plain ol' old school Christian belief-wise.

Just like thr Baron too, but with him it is Catholicism..but Catholicism is not the anointing that the Holy Ghost..that's why he will use the Bible to justify and always point back to martyrs and saints. Whereas the proper way for the revelation that is the Bible, to be interpreted, is without a human understanding, but an understanding that has been given to you that is from the Holy Ghost. This is why, when interpreting the Bible, the correct interpretation is the one where no denomination is exalted, but rather, the Bible always points you back to possessing the thoughts of God, His revelation about Himself, that happened through history and the letters in the Bible.

If your efforts at interpreting distract you from living that out, interpreting has become an idol.

You may not have said error itself, but saying they aren't any different is to say they could be in error as a whole and not individually. The point is that the church is the pillar of Truth and isn't as a whole ever in error so the councils must be correct and Spirit lead or the scriptures are false. The scriptures say the gates of hell will not prevail against the church and if the councils are in error then that's the church fathers in error as a whole and hell has prevailed. That's the logical extension of your statement. It is true that we are all in the same boat as the church fathers in that we must all rely on the Holy Spirit, but it is not the case that the church fathers are not special in that they were called to the councils to create the cannons that we are bound to as a whole. Individually we can all error and fathers aren't different in that sense, but as a council the fathers became special because they are then the Church, the pillar of truth.

    The apostle Paul makes it clear that humanity is not only fallen spiritually but intellectually. One of the finest N.T. theologians regarding the interpretation of the N.T. and the essential role of the Holy Spirit is Dr. Gordon Fee. Without a working understanding of Fee's work, a discussion of this kind would be like not understanding the importance of Q to the gospels.

    “Is there a correct interpretation” it would be super useful if we had a orthodox church tradition or this concept called church fathers to consult on these texts. Shame we definitely have nothing like that around.
