This is a fan request and I’ve been meaning to do a story on these guys because i definitely feel like their music is underappreciated and misunderstood. Enuff Z Nuff would be lumped in with the hair metal party towards the end of the genre’s demise in the late 80’s and early 90’s. When they first popped up on the scene the band were hailed as the next big thing, but their self-destructive tendencies torpedoed their trajectory. Bassist chip z nuff would summarize the band’s career by saying,It’s been ten steps forward and thirty steps back.” Stay tuned to find out the full story.
Led by the charismatic pairing of bassist Chip Z Nuff and vocalist Donnie Vie the band were more power pop than glam as they would blend the styles of the beatles and cheap trick for the hair metal generation, Enuf Z Nuff career failures were made up of every rock n’ roll cliche - drugs, infighting, a revolving cast of band members , bad business decisions and death.
The band’s humble roots date back to Chicago in 1983. Bassist Chip Z Nuff would hook up with a guitar player and singer named Donnie Vie who was 5 years his junior and came from a broken home. The pair would put a band together and Chip Z Nuff would recall the band’s early days saying to Louder sound in 2019 “The bond was unbreakable,The task at hand was: ‘Let’s write some great songs.’” We knew we had a good sound. We were very flamboyant, very colourful, we looked great.They would find another guitarist and drummer and They would come up with the name Enough Z’ Nuff before shortening it to Enuff Z’ Nuff.
The band would move into a cheap house, buy a drum machine and start writing music. They would never play by the books by renting out a studio and recording music,, instead as bassist enuff z nuff would tell loudersound they would sneak into a studio at lake geneva in wisconcin at 2 in the morning and record demos after everyone else had left.
The band would compile a demo called Hollywood Squares and send it to the major labels but no one seemed interested at first. Several years into their career they would cement their classic lineup with the addition of guitarist Derek Frigo and drummer Vikki Fox in 1988. Along with their new lineup came substance abuse problems. Enuff Z Nuff would tell Loudersound
“Everyone was fairly jacked up, found myself always trying to break up fights, trying to keep the drug dealers away from the band. I tried to make the road a little bit smoother for us. It never was, it was constantly bumpy.”
. Performing around Chicago, Enuff Z’Nuff‘s first break came when they were approached by local filmmaker John McNaughton about including their song Fingers On It” on the soundtrack to his independent film called Henry: Portrait of a Serial . Unfortunately for the band, the movie ran into censorship issues and would remain shelved for 4 years. Towards the end of the 80’s the Atlantic Records owned label Atco signed the band.
Released in 1989, the band’s self titled debut album featured two hit songs including "New Thing" and their biggest hit "Fly High Michelle," Soon enough the band was being featured on MTV, on TV Shows and their record sold a cool half a million albums. While there was a lot to celebrate the band members grew frustrated with how they were labelled as a hair metal band. Frontman Donny Vie would tell legendary rock interviews
we were true power pop and had we stayed on that path I think we would have had more longevity, a more stable career than the whole path we later got started on. We got signed at the worst possible time in the whole metal frenzy. With a major label there’s a whole marketing angle that you could never imagine and they’re not at all into music or trained in that but what they do know is how to sell something. So they’re looking at us and I think for the first time in a long time they had no idea where to go with us or how to “package” us.
Bad marketing aside, the band was stunned when their label Atco gave them a bill for $800K. The band signed a bad deal and weren’t selling enough albums to pay back their label..
Not helping things were the band’s growing drug dependency. While bassist Chip Z'Nuff never was a heavy user, it would be the rest of the band spiraling out of control. “
The band would release one more album with Atco records, 1991’s Strength. The album stalled at number 143 on the bilboard charts but the album got a lot of attention.

Urge Overkill had a similar trajectory. Blackie Onasis was one of the best drummers of the 90's and Saturation was a killer album.

I think you should maybe check out King's X and Jellyfish. DEF underrated but not THE most overlooked. Scads of famous musicians bow down to King's X

I spent two months practically living with the band during the recording of Strength at The Music Grinder studios in Hollywood.
I'll just leave it at this, Derick was one of the coolest guitarists I've ever met, but extremely insecure.
Donnie was the catalyst to all of their substance issues, but Derrick and Chip were right there. Vic Foxx never partied with them and while I was fortunate to be able to witness the recording of Strength, I'm shocked as to how these guys could pull it together and lay down such an epic record based on what I witnessed during that time.
RIP Derrick, you were a true legitimate friend and extremely talented musician.

"Strength" is such a MASTERPIECE. Enuff Z'nuff recorded other great albums like "Seven" or "Tweaked" but never encountered the success they highly deserved
One of those bands that, as a fan, you can't understand how they aren't huge (see also Redd Kross and Kings X). Their discography is phenomenal.
I only know Kings X because "It's Love" was a big hit. I liked it, and wondered why they didn't have more hits.
I've met Chip several times. He's a #1 class act, very generous guy. Chip is very approachable and easier to talk with. The band is also top notch and under rated.
I second all of that. Chip is quite a character, and fun to be with. Always hanging out to meet fans, too.
About two years ago, I got to go backstage during Slaughter. I found myself sitting stage side, bullshitting with Chip. Super cool dude. After, got to hang with Mark Slaughter and Chip. Mark was handing out pints of Patron. So much fun. Later that night, we were backstage with LA Guns. Those guys were dicks. haha
Chip is the kind of guy who will make you feel like you've been friends with him for years even though you just met him. Very nice guy.
I briefly met him the other night, but my brother was talking to him for a good 30 minutes. He seemed sad, like he was putting on a front. You could tell how much pride he had for his band and how much passion, for lack of better words was wasted. Luck wasn't on their side and for that reason I kinda wish him well and hope over the next few years maybe they achieve the success they deserve.
I've met him multiple times and he's such a lovely, sweet soul❤

I was in a recovery house in LA with Derek. He was a really nice and humble guy. He was a brilliant guitarist and taught me how to play Surrender properly. He was working on his own music but was always worried it wasn't 'now' enuff (🤣), as in 'alternative' or whatever. RIP Derek. Sad to hear his band's story as I never really knew much about them.

I am so glad you covered Enuff Z'Nuff. Fantastic Band. I've seen the Who,Zep,Heart and hundreds more..I'm a musician and I can tell you..the sustained interest in Enuff Znuff is FOR A GOOD REASON. Great Songs (Donnie Vie!) and great playing. Even with all the bad luck and bad mistakes..why does anyone still care?....because the music is THAT good. Clive Davis knew that...and he should know.

I used to see Enuff Z'Nuff back in the 80's and 90's on a regular basis at the Thirsty Whale in River Grove IL. I got to know them a little bit, they were cool guys. It was good to see Chip again in 2017 opening up for Ace Frehley in Tucson AZ. I liked the look of shock on his face when I said I hadn't seen him since the Thirsty Whale days...lol. I always thought they would make it bigger but I'm glad to see him still going. Keep rocking Chip!

This band is and was the soundtrack to my life. Met both of them when they have been over in the UK. Immensely talented, vastly underrated.
From the so-called 'Hair Metal' scene, Enuff Z'Nuff stood up because of their strong Beatles/Wings influences.
Many great gems worth checking out in their discography.
And don’t forget Cheap Trick Power-Pop influences there were the strongest and so this wasn’t too mainstream that’s why they weren’t bigger.

I saw Enuff Z'nuff once at an all-day concert in Hoffman Estates, IL. They were called in at the last minute to replace an opening act that couldn't make the venue on time. They opened followed by Firehouse, Damn Yankees, Lynerd Skynerd, and Poison in that order. The tinnitus didn't go away for a fortnight.

Wow, no mention of the 'Diamond Boy' record that preceded 'Brainwashed Generation'. I saw the Diamond Boy tour, and I loved it. Say what you want, but I'll always respect artists that go out of their way for the fans. Chip does that and is gracious with his time among the fans.
I just ran into these guys at a truck stop in Indiana. Had nice conversation. They were in an old RV style tour bus. After watching this, these guys are just designed to be on the road .

Such a great band! I bought Strength way back when and it was immediately one of my top 10 fav albums of all time.
A couple years ago I rediscovered them and found all these incredible albums I never knew they made. Paraphernalia and Dissonance are even better! Great great rock albums that every rock fan should try!
Donnies solo effort - Beautiful Things is maybe the best adult pop/rock album since John Lennons Double Fantasy. (Better, imho)
"Paraphernalia" is dare I say, even better than "Strength", which is saying something.
Fly High Michelle is a beautiful haunting song. Always reminds me of a friend I lost many years ago to suicide. Nice to see them get represented on this channel even though they’ve had a rough go of it.
Still have and listen to all of their albums. I've seen them play numerous times over the years. "Strength" is my favorite. Great memories!
EZN now is just Chip Z' Nuff and a bunch of hired guns. I hope Donnie comes to his senses and rejoins the band. Donnie and Chip together created some great tunes!

the story behind it....donnie had a friend named michelle that died of a drug overdose. as simple and as complicated as that

@@ckotcher1 Most likely he's asking why she had to give up her life for drugs and "you were just a little girl" means that she died way too young.
It was a great pop rock song for sure. Very catchy hook, great chorus and radio friendly.
@ The girl, IIRC, was 23. Donnie knew her as a close friend (not romantically involved) and she tried over and over to stop but her personal demons got the best of her, and drugs calmed those beasts.
I have seen these guys live,.. they are so talented,... all of the musicians that have played in the band,... but the iconic,... classic line up was beyond spectacular!! I had the chance to talk with Chip,... he's thoughtful, intelligent guy... the band just had some bad luck in a world where 99% of all bands barely get noticed.

I saw them three times live, and they put on a great show every time. They would hang around before and after gigs, meet fans, take photos and sign autographs as long as people wanted. Very appreciative of their fans, and cool guys.
Very underrated...Vikki was an amazing drummer and Rip Derek...saw them live once in Jan 90 and even have it in bootleg DVD from the Empire here in Philly

We opened for them last night outside of St. Louis. Chip is a cool guy. He sat and talked with us for a while before the show.
Still awesome .....my girlfriend and I just watched them play at a venue in humble Hobart, Indiana two nights ago on New Year's Eve.

I was living in Spain in 2015, and Chip and the band (of new guys) came and played a bar in the town I was living in, which was funny because it was a relatively small town and a very small bar. I got there early and found Chip at the bar, so I approached him and said hi. He said, "thank God, someone who speaks English!"
Long story short, the show was electric...I don't remember the name of the new singer/lead guitarist they had, but he was fantastic. Chip gave me relationship advice (I had been recently divorced) and being the only American there other than them, I took them to a Burger King after the show and hung out with the singer a bit. (I am from Chicago, which helped, I think.)
Chip and his girlfriend were nice, and since I told them I had no particular place to live if/when I returned to Chicago, they offered to give me a place to temporarily stay when I returned. I ended up staying in Europe, so I never took them up on the offer, but I thought that was cool.

Chip & Co. played a small club in my town a few months before the pandemic ended live shows. Sounded great.
It’s pretty amazing that we got 15 albums from them. Almost all of them great. Not to mention all the good Donnie Vie solo stuff.
I've loved this band since their self-titled album in '89. Such melodic, soulful music, at least their early stuff with Donnie. Wish Donnie and Chip would re-unite for an album and tour.
Thanks for making a video about Z’Nuff cause this band never gets any love. I’ve seen them many times and sadly one of those concerts Donnie arrived drunken on stage and Chip cancelled the gig. The music is magic though and needs more attention.
I first heard of these guys when I snuck out of the house and walked across the island to my friend's house and we watched Headbanger's Ball at like 2am on MTV and the song "Fly High Michelle" came on. He thought it was a lame song but I actually really liked it. It was one of my guilty pleasure songs.
Donnie is still writing and recording great songs, Chip is still touring and hired the mighty Alex Kane on guitar.

I was their concert photographer in Chicago in 1988, I never thought they'd get big enough to have a "sad story." I was shocked when I moved to LA and they had a song on MTV.
It didn't help that Beavis and Butthead roasted them hard as well.

@ Winger was a far more talented act than people give them credit for. There is far more subtlety in their arrangements than people allow for them. Just consider that Rod Morgenstein is a professor of drums at Berklee and Kip Winger an award-winning classical composer. For those who actually listened, neither should come as a surprise. That Beavis and Butthead ripped on them was appropriate, since they represent exactly the kind of knuckleheaded metalheads that wouldn't get it.

Paul friggin' McCartney would get the same treatment in that case; "I Saw Her Standing There" begins with "She was just seventeen..." and that doesn't stop him in the song. IIRC Kip said that Beatles song inspired the lyrics to "Seventeen."
My old band did multiple shows with these guys in the 90s. Great show and crazy crazy times every time with them. Chip is hilarious.
I met Chip back in the 90's and he's super cool! I also met Ricky several years before he died and he was a great guy and drummer as as well! I saw them live at a club and they were awesome! Donnie was rather reserved but it was cool he came out to talk to fans.
My band just opened for them last year in Collinsville Illinois. They had Tory and Alex on guitars, they BOTH shread. They played for like 2 hours straight, put on a GREAT show. Nice bunch of guys.

My band opened for these guys around 2017. I was expecting more of a glam style band, but they had some great pop hooks and some psychedelic elements that surprised me. Their lead guitarist at the time was also the signer who replaced Midge Ure in Ultravox.
Amazing band and never got their due.
A a kid in Chicago during the 80s, I grew up listening to Enuff Z'Nuff, and nobody would have called them "power pop", no matter what the band thought there sound was. They were a good band, but they partied and acted way above their pay grade, egos just writing checks the body of their work could not cash.
When I was a junior or senior in HS (-1991), a girl I became friends with knew Chip. She brought me and my best friend over to his place one night in Beverley. It was a pretty quick hangout, maybe an hour, but he was super cool and we had some laughs; he even taught me how to play "New Thing" on a Vox that was in his dining room, passing it back and forth. I'd seen him play live shows before then, but I've always been super impressed by his showmanship on stage. His "whoops, gotta slide my finger up two frets with my picking hand" move, damn. Seeing him do stuff like that at the Thirsty Whale, priceless.

I honestly don’t see their story as that sad.
They had some success.
Not every band is going to have the lengthy success of The Rolling Stones.

if only not for this or that marketing mistake I don’t buy.
Well if they weren't a bunch of junkies they might have been able to manage their money better but success is never guaranteed
@@TheBigMclargehuge I remember hearing a story that Donny insulted either Clive Davis or David Geffen & what ever one it was they basically said to them that there goes your carrier and they pulled all of the support for the record just like that .
No other hard rock band of that time has the songwriting talent and amount of great songs as them , guns has alot of good material and vain has the one amazing album , but no other is even close. (my fav bands are Nightwish and Iron Maiden lol

Derek Frigo was an awesome player. There's stories that Vikki Foxx is a thief. That's what got him fired from Vince Neil solo band. Maybe a story for the first Vince Neil Band album w/ Steve Stevens?

Rob deluca on bass kicking vinces ass after the bus broke down , Brent woods on guitar being gifted a Ferrari from Vince and then getting into a fight and leaving the band after not wanting to return it to Vince. Vince thinking Steve vie was in the band but it was actually Steve stevens.

I lived near these guys back then... they had a brief taste of being "rock stars" and then played rock star for another 20 years.
They were a great live band in the late 80's
I was writing a song on my notepad, i titled it "time to let you go". I searched the title in google just in case i have no issues with publishing, and i found this band because of a song of the same name. The band sounded great, gave me Cheap Trick vibes.

In the deepest parts of my heart, mind, and soul, this band is there. Love these guys so much. Legendary talent, as far as I’m concerned.
They did an acoustic set to open for Def Leppard at the World Theater in Orland Park, Illinois back in the early/mid 90s. I was at the show. Ugly Kid Joe was scheduled to open, but their lead singer was arrested in Cleveland the previous the night and Chip and the boys came to the rescue.
Fly High Michelle is a damn good song imo.
I saw these guys in 89. Loved that debut album & didn't lump them as metal. The other band I loved from that era was Bang Tango, saw them live as well & they were fantastic.
