I think part of it is jealous people who actually want to ether tear down those who are brave enough to put themselves out there because the commentator is too insecure to participate themselves, and the other side of it is the divide in approach to cosplay and people misunderstanding each other's intention. In cosplay I have observed two types of cosplayers; the ones who are into it as a costume to show their enthusiasm for the character and nothing more, and the ones who are into trying to embody the character as perfectly as possible. I think it's a damn shame that there's so much fighting between the two camps, but I do thing some of it comes from not understanding the different intention behind the costume.

I’m not black nor a cosplayer myself but speaking as an Asian woman I noticed that while white cosplayers can get away with (East) Asian baiting (I.e fox eyes and certain filters) to some extent but darker skinned cosplayers, especially black cosplayers get penalized for even trying to just dress as an anime character without even modifying their features and it really says a lot about how prevalent racism and colorism is in cosplay
Edit 5/14/22: Wow, I can't believe this comment ignited a whole argument. To address some of the arguments here, I have no problem with people cosplaying any character (within reason), but changing your features to appropriate ethnic features (especially if you're white) is just plain wrong because unlike east asian fishers, east/southeast asians still have to face being discriminated against and even killed at times for their facial features. It may not be as severe for Asians in Asia but in the Asian diaspora, especially in places like the U.S, many of us had to face discrimination for our heritage, whether it'd be the lunchbox, or stereotyping, plus the expectation to assimilate for most people. We're not saying cosplaying as a character from another race/ethnicity is bad, but treating features, especially of poc in general as a costume is very morally questionable at best. And for the person who said that giving the color of our skin importance, it's not that we do that on purpose, it's more that our current society in general, unfortunately, favors more eurocentric features/skin color. In a perfect world, our skin color wouldn't have to matter at all, but as history and especially the past few years has shown us, it's otherwise.

    • @Pathfinder-qp1he
      @Pathfinder-qp1he 2 ปีที่แล้ว +227

THIS!! Asian people aren’t white, they find asian (not to even begin the fact people associate asians with Eastern Asia, as if Asians don’t come in a range of skin tones) as exotic enough to want to “look” like them and act like we’re an exhibit but at the same time think because SOME of us have naturally light skin we’re white therefore they can cosplay asian characters. Whitewashing (or blackwashing when it comes to fanart of characters in videos previously discussed) is a serious issue when someone PURPOSEFULLY changes the race/skin tone of a character to fit their agenda/“preference”.
SOMEONES SKIN TONE WHEN COSPLAYING IS NATURAL AND CANT BE CHANGED BY ANYONE.

    • @cathydinh868

@@Pathfinder-qp1he I agree 100%! I hate how they police darker-skinned cosplayers on how they dress yet they overlook how many white ppl purposely change their features to imitate esea features, often contributing to how we are fetishized. It's like they want to project themselves onto the characters in a weird way. I'm only part East Asian (mostly Southeast Asian heritage) but I feel like people forget we, at least East Asians are POC too and it's not like someone can realistically change their skin tone, at least without serious repercussions. Besides, not even most East Asians are super pale and light skinned; some forget that there are some East Asians who are part black, hispanic, etc

Asian is no skin color. For mankind exists only 3 extremes and that are either white, brown, or black. There are no grey zones here or any differences based on from which country you come from. Thats simply the reason also why people are ok with with white cosplayers cosplaying anime characters, while being not asians self, because for these people its in their mindset of "representasion of perfection" good enough, that the "correct" skin color simply is fulfilled. What nationality the person has in that moment, plays no role to them, as long that picture of perfect representation of a character is "flawlessly" given in their view.
And as sad as it is to say, in the view of racists n autists is simply a "flaw" that ruins in the moment their personal vision of something, how it has to be "perfect/correct" reason enough for them, to say such stupid things, like the skin color isnt fitting.
Thats also the difference between racists n ill autists, the autist at least finds nice words of praise n ends his words with a but... The racist just tries to shittalk/discriminate n insult you for even daring to try cosplaying a white character.

Otherwise most white people who cosplay are just as guilty since a majority of anime characters are Japanese… if a cosplayer looks awesome, regardless of the way they choose to portray, it should be seen as character appreciation. It’s different from when artists choose to race swap characters for racist or malicious reasons and attack the original artist after. You can wear afros, wigs or cultural attire just dont make fun of or change your skin tone to match that character. But anyways great video as always, I'm not an artist but I love your channel and you've helped introduce me to amazing artists. This is all coming from a Nigerian living in canada btw.

I find it funny that most of these people still think these anime characters are white. THEY ARE ASIAN, people just want to insert themselves into something and make it about race. It’s cosplay, and the only way to cosplay characters without doing anything offensive is by not altering your natural skin color. If someone wanted to cosplay Killer B and then put on blackface, they’d be a piece of shit. However, if they do what is being shown here and just stick with their natural skin color, then the internet complains again. You shouldn’t be ridiculed by respecting other races and not trying to paint their skin color onto yourself. You really just can’t win on the internet anymore.

I didn’t know this was an issue, but obviously weirdos have to ruin everything. Sounds like a case of the “No Fun Police” Due to all the “fun” that’s going on. Let people live and cosplay, whatever makes them happy and be happy together that you got people that shares the same interest instead of focusing on color or race of a made up character. Compliment on their efforts and costumes and party. Sounds like a crazy idea 🤷‍♂️

    Everyone should respect each other.
Everyone has their own approach to cosplay.
For one is just fun and trying to be character they like even if character is opposite of cosplayer ex. Girl cosplaying as guy, tall girl cosplay as short girl.
Other cosplayer will not cosplay as somebody who does not match to her/his body structure because they don't want "change character appearance" for fans of this character.
Both ways are ok is cosPLAY.
You can disagree with this, but don't attack people because you don't agree with their way of cosplaying.
Please, don't be selfish and don't force your own opinion/views on rest.
If you don't have problem with backwashing/whitewashing, please don't get mad at whitewashing/blackwashing.

It's so annoying and ridiculous how we are treated just for being black. I remember the first time I cosplayed. It's mainly racist yt people and anti black people.

Well the reason is fear. And people are very weird about change just in general . some of them get very uncomfortable almost as if they feel if you change their beloved character it's like a personal attack on their childhood or something. Cosplay is supposed to be fun! race should not matter and the double standard is freaking weird to me (this includes fanart too)I've also seen this happen when a cosplayer isn't the right size too. This is cute but you're too big to play x.

No matter what kind of person you are if you find the courage to cosplay, that's amazing. It doesn't matter what size, height or skin color you have. Do it! It's amazing!
I once saw a group of girls wearing hijabs and they were cosplaing as the avengers. It looked so freaking amazing.
Here is my only problem, maybe somebody reads it and can help.
I am white as a wall but I would love to cosplay as Bruno from Encanto... But it feels like culturel appropiaten if I do this. Is it?
If yes, I'll go back to peter quill, Gamora or Poison Ivy. But I at least wanted to ask. And no, I would definitaly not paint my ski the same tone as Bruno. That would feel weird and SO wrong...

I really feel bad for cosplayers, the fandom is extremely toxic. As Sydeon, I always wanted to cosplay but never wanted to deal with this. I'm literally a *pale fat latina* ... And "white people" just are kind of stun-locked when they see: Someone pale that isn't "white" (on their standards).
I love to see when black people do cosplay a character that's originally "white" because they sometimes add elements from their culture, and make the character look unique in their own way. Cosplaying should be dressing as a character that you like, and having the option to add "a bit of yourself" on it.
For example: Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka, they wouldn't be the same if they were brought to life by other actors because Johnny Depp did put a bit of himself on these characters... And that made them unique and memorable.
Edit: The James cosplay is very cool. Is one of the coolest I've ever seen! (And James is my favorite Pokémon anime character.)

Cosplay is something you enjoy. Dressing up as characters you love. Cosplay is about bringing people together. Basically at conventions etc. It's about fun. Size, skin color, race is not involved in cosplay. It's just dressing as the a character from a show you like/the character you like. I shouldn't have to change my skin color to make it accurate to a white/lighter version of the character. I will only put face paint on if I want to look like an alien, mythical creature etc. Blue, red, yellow, pink, red. You get the idea. We can't swap are skin colors. We are stuck with it for life.

This makes me very sad and angry. In 14 years as a cosplayer I've seen a lot of absurd things like this. It is revolting. Being a cosplayer is hard on its own. Unless you're a skinny Asian, people will always find flaws. Every time. It's exhausting. I have a beautiful black friend who is afraid to cosplay non-black characters because of that kind of thing (and fatphobia, which I also suffer from). And it's a waste, because she has talent. I follow a lot of black cosplayers who do a much better job than some "standard white/Asian". It would be perfect if they get the recognition they deserve. People tend to forget that cosplay is an art and that it can be done by anyone.

This is so stupid. Why should the skin-color of the cosplayer even matter? Shouldn't you rather be happy if a person cosplays as a character you like, as this is just their way of paying homage to said character? This isn't like in Vikings Valhalla where they cast a black woman to play the role Jarl Haakon, who was a white man in real life. Cosplaying is merely one of the many ways fans show respect to a character they love, which transcends race and gender.

Ok so this is exactly how I feel about drawing characters as black versions, like it’s literally the same thing. It’s not “black washing” a character when someone cosplays as or draws Sailor Moon as black. It’s literally an interpretation of the character as black. That’s it. It’s not turning Sailor Moon black forever or saying she SHOULD be black. It literally shouldn’t be this deep, but because I live in a world where apparently my skin tone itself is a political statement there’s always a huge debate about it.

I don’t even cosplay people who aren’t poc because it’s so bad to the point where I’ve heard this so often that even I feel that I can’t cosplay who I like because of my skin tone. I only have one cosplay and I searched high and low to find a character who I liked who looked similar to me :( Not only should poc cosplayers be accepted for their work, no matter the characters original race, but there should also be a wider diversity within characters’ races in general..

6:03 I genuinely lost my braincells reading that shit, some people tryna to act like they aren’t racist ☠️🖐
It sucks that cosplayers have to deal with this level of stupidity and toxicity 24/7 and it even encourages others who wish to cosplay into quitting. I love how they claim that black, tanned, mixed people should cosplay more but when they do, they suddenly get attacked for “not matching the character!” SMH 🙄 those people can’t decide what they want anymore 😒

That's why although I always wanted to, I never take part in cosplay because I never felt welcome.

… honestly most of the people that cosplay anime characters are usually caucasian, and not once have I ever seen someone in the comments say: “Deku isn’t white.” “Hinata isn’t American.” “Tanjiro isn’t caucasian but nice cosplay.” Like come on dude, if your not gonna complain about the amazing white cosplayers not being Asian, then you have no right to do so with the equally as amazing poc ones. 😐

The reality is that these platforms live from controversy and their algorithms push it actively. So these remarks get pushed to front.

First time commenting here hi! Ok so one thing I would like to add is that it’s so weird to me these people are ether racist or gatekeepers witch I wouldn’t be surprised if it was both, to me these people are npcs lol because who in there right mind would just be like “oh the cosplay is good but there’s one problem” LIKE WHAT! it’s not like their white ether their Asian coming from Asian creators, I mean some of us watch anime I thought that would be something we would know by now but I guess brains are stuck in npc mode.

im not black but i am mexican with dark skin and having dark skinned people get hate for trying to cosplay discourages other people who also have dark skin to not cosplay. i hope this stops.

I want to get into cosplay but I have eczema and a lot of colour discoloration/scars etc.
And if people can't get over a black person cosplaying a white character, then what will they say to me.
