I owned a T120 before swapping it for a Speed Twin. Looks-wise, I lean to the T120; I'm not old enough (I'm in my late 30s) to have nostalgia for the original Bonnevilles, but my father had one, so I suppose that's where it may come from. Beyond the looks, the T120 just can't compare to the Speed Twin; it's slower, heavier, handles more poorly, stops more slowly, and I wouldn't even say it's much more comfortable (though it is a bit) - none of this would really matter all that much if it wasn't for the fact that these motorcycles are basically equivalent in price, which means you're mostly paying for the cosmetics of the T120, and actual performance (in every sense of the word) on the Speed Twin. I find the Speed Twin more practical (ironically), mostly due to the fact that the lack of unfinished aluminium and 'delicate finish' parts (like the fake carbs) means that I can ride the Speed Twin in nearly all weather without feeling quite so terrified that I'll have to spend hours cleaning it, while possibly risking irreparable damage (i.e. scratched chrome). I do think the new T120s coming out seem to have sorted a number of issues; the lighter crank, lower inertia wheels, and built-in cruise control should add both ride-ability and value, and give the T120 a bit of attraction back. My advice to anyone not looking to ride in sunshine only is to get the T120 black (rather than the standard) as it will be easier to maintain the finish of... but don't get me started on the perils of matte paint. On a random style note, the T120 feels very 1950s/60s, whereas I see the Speed Twin as more 1970s/80s in terms of aesthetics. Cheers for the video!
Most ridculous thing in biking community is age association to specific bikes. If you are 20 you should have that and that bike. If you are middle age you should have that and that but not that. You should only have criteria of how the bike fits your needs and if it's giving you fun. That's all.
Nice honest video review, although l am tempted with the speed twins extra poke and sporty handling. The T120 is a great touring bike and l have done tens of thousands of pretty comfortable and relaxing miles on it. I am 67 and it is easier on the the, tyres, chain and body. For UK and European touring, l did really appreciate the more gentlemanly nature of the T120, it's a bike that grows on you......:-)
Yep, must buy both: T120 for the long ride, the Speed for the afternoon romp. Thanks for this review! Always wanted to see how these directly compared.
Same! I bought the 2023 T120 Black after test driving the T100 at my local dealership as they didn't have any T120s in stock. I almost bought it as it was sub USD $10k, but upgraded to the T120 due to the extra 6th gear and dual front disk brakes. Sometimes I wish I would have gone with the T100 due to the weight of the T120, but love my bike and will probably keep it until I die! It's a quality classic that will never go out of style
Great comparison. Speed Twin for me, better brakes, tubeless tires, 28 kg lighter (how do they do that?) All for only £100 more, better value than a RE!
Back when I purchased my last motorcycle in spring 2019, these two were top of the list. I'd tested the T120 the season prior and loved it. But because of the Speed Twin's on-paper superiority -- exactly as you cite here, TMF -- I fully expected it to easily unseat the T120. But after a test ride, I couldn't have been more wrong. Despite the shared DNA, they've got distinctly different personalities. The T120 is more relaxed (and comfortable). As you accurately point out, it's the perfect unhurried Sunday companion. By comparison, the Speed Twin is a taut athlete, which also means it feels a bit high strung. For example, I recall it having noticeably more engine braking. In the end, both bikes are well rounded and characterful enough to chill out or pick up the pace, but for the roads we've got around here, having fun slow is worth more. For me, the T120 was the clear winner and a decision I'd repeat today. But then, who says we can only have one bike?
One of the things I really respect about TMF is your ability to do a subjective comparison (appearance, in this case), while considering alternative viewpoints. You'll point out what you find most appealing, while recognizing what others might find more attractive about the alternative. Such a rare thing these days to find such deep respect for the viewpoints of others.
Having tested a speed twin and owned a t120 for two years I was interested to see what you thought. For two similar looking bikes they are very different in character. Obviously the speed twin is designed to handle and perform better. The types of tyres fitted make a huge difference. The t120s heated grips and centre stand do make life a little easier, (although Triumph seem to have removed the stand to save weight on the 2021 version). As for the noise, I've fitted Vance and Hines pipes, but managed to get the US ones with removable decibel killers. Fitted Halcyon bar end mirrors, much cheaper than Triumph and really look the part. Keep up the good work Andy. It would be a boring old world if we all liked the same type of bike.
Both nice bikes but it has to be the T120 for me, although I still prefer my T100 with all the extras mine has on it. I'm 60 and had a full license for 41 years I'm not a speed demon anymore.
I just purchased a 2022 T120. I rode the speed twin also, but I did not like the foot peg position. To me the T120 foot peg position is just perfect for me and that is why I chose the T120. I felt more confident in it and love the seating position.
Thank you for another great video! I’d go for the T120 because I’m 6’5” tall and is more comfy out of the 2. If I was 5’10” or less than the Speed Twin for sure. But overall styling I love the T120!
I traded my 06 Rocket 3 which I had owned for nearly 10 yrs for a 2018 T120 because of ill health. Could no longer manage the Rocket because it was so damned heavy, not to mention the running expenses! The T120 is miniscule in comparison and of course much slower. But, I could not be happier. I am back in my teenage to early 20's yrs when I get on the Bonnie. Working the gears, chucking it into corners, not worrying about stopping - the list goes on. Love it. Would like to change the pea shooters but blimey, modern exhausts are so expensive these days. Might just start with a cross pipe next year to get rid of the cat. But as you said, it's a proper gentleman's ride, a gentleman's express I like to say.
You had me at Brembo's ... Sadly at my age and with my commitments, I'm finding myself more interested in how well a bike stops, rather than how well it goes ;-) (not really) ... Great videos as usual. Thank you !!
Interesting choice….my former Rocket III Touring had strangely a Brembo rear brake and Nissin in front…..all together they were excellent brakes, but I wondered about how Brembo wasn’t in the front.🤔
@@DJ-xl8xh just sold my Royal Star Tour Deluxe for the same reason. 12 years of 850 lbs has worn me down. I think a T120 might be the perfect replacement.
Great review as usual! I own and love both bikes. I think you nailed the differences including the ergos and ride feel. The only thing I would add to help explain the performance differences is that the Speed Twin also has a higher final drive ratio (2.63 vs 2.41). I tend to take my ST out more often because it provides a completely different riding experience compared to my big touring bike.
I've got a Bonneville SE which is a superb motorcycle and am thinking of trading it in for a Speed Twin in a couple of years (3) when I get my state pension... I've got a lump sum from my civil service pension due as well, I wouldn't be disappointed if I stuck with the SE.. don't underestimate these Triumph's they are superb motorcycles you'll love to own... If you want to enjoy your retirement don't sit in the front room looking out the window buy one of these and really have some Golden Years!
@@TheMissendenFlyer These Triumph blacks ,the bobber, bonneville, and NEW ROCKET 3, how are they for corrosion ? Can you park them outside and forget ? Maybe hose off once a month?
I tried most of the range, the Speed Twin left me breathless with excitement. Though I love the power, I also want something that I am happy to be a little more sedate on and the Speed just urged me to overtake that car, take that bend a little faster which wasn't personally what I wanted. Fantastic bike, but I love my T120. The engine tone and burbling did nearly swing it though.
Tires, tire pressures and the exhaust pipes all are factors that come in the riding experience. Even with two of a kind bikes they propably would feel different. Great test, still and T120 for me. Although not that colour, a Bud Ekins would do me. Thumbs up, good video.
Thanks for the comparison, I think that your video has helped me make a choice between the T120 and Speed Twin (which was not very clear in my mind). I am actually still riding a Street Twin but I am thinking to "the next level" and the Speed Twin looks to be what I should purchase. Last but not least, for a french guy like me, your English accent is just perfect. I understood everything in the video which is not always the case when I talk to your cousins on the over side of the Atlantic so please do not change anything!!!
I've got the speed twin and my dad has the bonneville t120. We occasionally swap over and have a go on each others bike when we go out. Personally I prefer my speed twin because its comfy enough for a long Sunday ride out but it's got that bit more to it when you want to have some fun in those corners that just make you grin. Not slating the bonniville off tho. Love the bike to pieces. But the speed twin just slightly edges it out. Cheers for the review Andy :)
Love the look of the Speed Twin but prefer the riding position of the T120.. If i could bring the pegs forward (not sure if thats possible) it would be the Speed Twin every day👍
Own a 2017 Thruxton R and had the Speed Twin been available then it would have been an interesting decision. That said the Thruxton is reasonably comfortable for me and has a massive grin factor.
That was an excellent comparison from an experienced motorcyclist. Andy is totally correct. Both are marvellous bikes and both very desirable. Also both cost about the same. Six months ago I had to decide between the two. My decision was based on the fact that I am a returnee to motorcycling after a 35 year hiatus. I watched various reviews, including Andy’s and ended up with the T120. It’s probably the correct choice for me, being a very uncurrent 64 year old git. The bike I purchased was a green and white model (2016-2020 range). I’ll probably (almost certainly will) swap it for something quicker in 2022 after I have more saddle time. If I was a current motorcyclist I would have had the Speed Twin. To me the cost of the Bonneville T120 is weight, flickability, some loss of braking efficiency and a fair bit of shove. So what do I gain? Centre stand, heated grips, blingy chrome spoked wheels, grab rail, easier seating position and slightly cheaper insurance (£186 fully compressive with no no-claims bonus). It’s also great fun to ride and goes like stink when you give it the beans. Am I happy with my decision? Absolutely. If you are in the market for a new bike, the new T120 (2021 onwards) has a different specification. The centre stand and grab rail have been deleted, the engine has been slighty tweaked with a new crank and the chrome rims replaced with aluminium. I also believe the brakes have been upgraded as well. If buying new, my opinion is that these changes might now make the Speed Twin a better option, all other things being equal. But if buying secondhand and ultimate performance is not your thing then a new or secondhand (2106-2020) Bonneville T120 is still worth considering.
Awesome review Andy I’m thinking speed twin for me as I’m only a Short fellow as you have mentioned before thanks for this in-depth review absolutely spot on. Thanks again Jimbo from Birmingham England 👌😄
Hey TMF. You could argue that all modern retro bikes play with fakery. All try to give us older riders those wonderful reminders of our childhood whilst also appealing to new riders with their sharper looks and connectivity. Not to mention ABS, engine and suspension advances of course. Great times to be a biker!
I ended up with T120, and love it; but cant argue with TMF views. I don't know about the leg comfort for taller people, but yes better than the SpeedTwin! (All bikes seem cramped to me.....) I'd like a slightly more canted forward position on the T120.....make motorways a little more comfortable?
6’3” and got a speed twin with no issues at all with leg position. Also ride a Tiger 800 which is like a big armchair for comfort. Anyway, you don’t notice those concerns with the ST as it just puts a smile on your face especially when it pops and farts as you roll off. Engine is a masterpiece.
I’m 6’2” and have a Speed Twin, and the comfort is just fine. I tried the full Bonneville range, and soon as I tried the ST it was game over .... such a great ride! Big smiles, lovely soundtrack (I’ve the V&H pipes too) 👍
As a T120 owner, that plastic mud guard affair at the rear of the one you have either isn't standard (since that's an Ace Cafe version) or they've changed the rear since 2018. Mine has a proper rear fender, which the taillight and indicators are mounted to. I love my T120 but I've been tempted to add a Street Twin to the garage (for when I'm feeling more sporty), as the T120 is definitely more of a lazy cruiser, despite having a lot of power...it just enjoys a relaxing ride and to be fair, so do I most of the time (and that's why I own it).
Pretty sure that's the factory aftermarket tail-tidy (optional with online configuration). Completely agree that the standard rear fender looks way better, as I personally think that if you're willing to go for a bike so retro that they've disguised the injectors as carburettors, keep the retro fender. By comparison, that's the standard Speed Twin rear end, and you can tell. I suspect that most people that would insist on a tail-tidy on the T120 would probably also prefer the other aesthetic changes on the Speed Twin.
Thank you. I had no idea there was such a big difference. I would love to see a 2021 Moto Guzzi v7, Triumph Street Twin, Royal Enfield Interceptor, Kawasaki w800 kind of shootout.
I REALLY struggle to keep my beady little eyes off of your Street Triple in the background that i almost forgot there was a review going on. Great vid as always
Good to see a back to back same manufacturer review. Surprised at the weight difference, tested a T120 and thought it was heavy to move around, would be good to test the speed twin. Top work.
I love both models but I have to admit that the Speed Twin is the absolute winner. Triumph has managed to give the 2 models their own character and that is what makes them so special. This has been another great video and comparison test, thanks TMF, and I hope there will be more tests of the new Bonville models 2021, as the engines have been upgraded.
Very much enjoyed this one, a big retro Triumph fan especially the speed twin. A Royal Enfield interceptor ( Baker Express ) rider at the moment ( excellent bike ), looking to add another to the stable. Also a fan of the Speedmaster. Short tours in mind. Thanks for your efforts with the channel.
Whichever one you own is the best 😄. I really enjoyed your older bike reviews. Not all of us can afford new. Just a thought. Keep up with the great work 👍
A good review between both Triumphs. With regards to retro for the Triumph, I’ve only seen 1 Speed Twin and the thoughts I had then are still the same after watching this video. Because the name Speed Twin is a retro name from Triumph ( the old 650 ) I think the the Twin should have the spike wheels as well as the knee pads. The dummy carbs are the old Amal Mk 1 concentric I think that they should be in the Twin also. Just showing my age here Andy. Great review from Down Under.
I was hoping to find a video comparing these two bikes and let me say you smashed it. Excellent video !!! I have the scrambler 1200xc, but I also like the speed twin 1200. Cheers !
Great review! My choice would be the T120 with the stock seat and rear mudguard and with the chrome rather than blacked out finish. I’d also fit some chrome bar end mirrors. The Speed Twin is lovely to ride but I’d rather have a Thruxton if I were looking at a ‘performance’ Bonnie.
This is the review complete with spec comparison and riding comparison that I've been waiting for. Great work on this one, cards fell about how I thought, but if I go this direction I'll put a leg over both. Thanks for the top shelf work.
It's a tough decision for me. I'm coming from a ZX14R and an Aprilia Tuono 1100. They are complete therapy animals that I can't really use on the street. I also have herniated discs in my lower back, so I don't ride much at all because of it. So I sold my ZX14R and I'm thinking of trading my Aprilia perhaps on one of these two. I'm afraid the Speed twins lightness and riding position might be too close to the Tuono and I've sat on a T120 and it's comfy like a couch, but then again I'm also afraid I'll miss the sportiness if I get a T120, but I bet my back will feel better and I might get out to ride more then. Hmm. I did test ride a Speed triple and it was lovely, but I do like the retro looks of these here.
That was a very helpful back to back comparison. Would have to agree the Speed Twin does it for me as well. The prices, as close as they are, really surprised me. 👍🏼 😎
Nice video! It really helped me in the decission between those two bikes. But now there is one comparison missing: Would be great if you could compare the Speed Twin with the Thruxton RS!
I agree with everything you've said, but would like to add a couple of points in favour of the T120. Firstly, it has a centre stand as standard, making chain maintenance easier. Also the factory luggage options are better, which for me makes it a better option for touring. On my T120, the rear mudguard is painted metal which give good protection in wet weather. Couple that with the rear luggage rack makes it look quite tidy (IMHO). Finally, The Vance & Hines pipes on the T120 do make it sound better.
Thank you for this excellent and thorough comparison. I am in the market for a Triumph Bonneville and have been looking at these two as my most desired choices.
I loved my SpeedTwin. Toured Wales on it. Fancied a change and now ride the 1200xe. Much more road presence with this tall bike and it still goes like stink if you want it to.
So glad you did this comparison. I own a T120, it wins on style and with an X-Pipe fitted the pea-shooter exhausts sound pretty good as well. On spec the Speed Twin takes it, especially with the Brembo brakes and HP engine. My wish is a T120 TFC (Triumph Factory Custom) which would see the T120 specced up beautifully. I think Triumph owe us a new TFC soon, and if it’s a T120 I’ll be beating a path to hand over my deposit.
Excellent comparison, although with respect to the exhaust sound it is a bit unfair. The decision was difficult but I'll stick with my Gentleman's Ride. For the other days I have my RS660. Thanks a lot!
Great review. Thank you! i loved my Speed Twin for the 6 months i owned it, but i am 6ft, and 200 pounds. Just always felt too small for me as my daily ride. So i bought a R1250R. I love it. Super under rated bike..
Great video, thank you Sir. I would choose the regular T-120 with all the chrome and put the new Trident's mirrors on it. Now we all know your true hooligan character....LOL...Sal : ).
TMF, great video as always! I am conflicted between the T120 & Speed Twin and while you give the edge to the ST, I am leaning toward the 120 mostly due to ride stance & posture. Currently I have a Yamaha Star Bolt and want to upgrade to something nicer that has better ergonomics, especially with my legs as the Bolt just isn't doing it for me on longer rides. I've always had a soft spot for Triumphs even before I began to ride 5 years ago and like the classic style of the Bonneville - like you said, it's what a proper bike should look like. I've also thought about the Bobber and Speedmaster, but I think I want a change from the cruiser style.
Great review of these two amazing bikes. From what I understand the engines are identical and where Triumph makes the changes is in the throttle mapping and not the fuel and timing. At full twist the throttle is actually only being told to open around 91%. You can adjust this with an Android device and ECU Tune app. Dont quote me on that, but I believe thats the only change between the two bikes with engine and power delivery.
Nice review, I’m thinking about upgrading my street twin to a T120, I’m probably going to go for the speed twin. I’d keep the street twin but running out of room.
Nice one Flyer. Ones decision really comes down to how you want to ride and look on each. The Speed Twin is set up for you to have a bit more of a go. Saying that, I bought a T100 Black last year and that has enough poke for me in my mid 50s . I’d certainly recommend fitting V&H peashooters. Fabulous deeper throater sound and feels like a couple of extra horses too.
I was looking at Scramblers but your reviews on the Speed Twin are changing my mind. I currently have a Z650, so know what to expect with the naked bike feel. The modern classic look is absolutely stunning, this bike sounds great even in video, and looks like it's a monster to ride.
Both very cool bikes. I think the Speed Twin has that muscular look you don't see a lot in these modern retro bikes. It is probably #1 or 2 on my bike lust list right now. Just wish they'd do an RS version with some upgraded bits! Come on Triumph!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Wow, really! Any time frame? Still tempted to pull the trigger on a 2020 model that a few dealers are now discounting. Gotta be one of the best looking bikes on the market, and performance to match from what I've heard.
Thank you for the great comparison! It was really helpful to hear about your thoughts after riding them back to back. I’m hoping to go test ride both of these models on Saturday for my first big bike. I wish they offered a version of the T120 with a Speed Twin/Thruxton engine.
I just got back from the local Triumph dealer. Coming from an R3, I felt a little nervous that these bikes would feel too big; not at all. The T120 was comfortable and easy to ride. It was like a walk with an old friend. Then, I tried the Speed Twin. As soon as I got onto the road, the bike let me know that it wanted to go, but in a confidence-inspiring way. There is now a Speed Twin parked in my garage. Thank you for the other video you did comparing the first and second generation Speed Twins. I agree that the first generation is the better looking bike, and my local dealer happened to have a brand new 2020 (3 miles on the clock) on the showroom floor, so I decided to grab it while it was available. Thank you again, and please continue making all the great videos - safe riding!
I had the chance to ride both, plus the Thruxton, before buying and I went for the T120 Black. Does that mean I'm a gentleman now? Your comparison is pretty fair, although the back end on a standard T120 is much more retro than the one on the Ace. If I was 20 years younger I would have gone for the Thruxton, 10 years younger and probably the Speed Twin, as it is, on the wrong side of 60, a gentleman's conveyance is just what I need.
It's a fairly easy split between the visual appeal of the T120 compared to the performance and handling of the Speed twin. For that reason i would suspect the T120 to easily outsell the speedtwin as that has signifant competition. Personally i couldn't find a more beautiful bike than the T120, although granted that back end, which I've never seen on a T120 before is dreadful.
@@wanionwombat9338 For me, there was a noticeable improvement overall but not really enough for me to say it was worth it. But if you do much 2 up riding then they are worth every penny.
Hello! Thank you for the video, very well done comparison, like always. The thing here, is that the T120 ir more like a cruiser (not really, but gets near to it), and the speed twin, shows a more sporty character. I took both for a test ride, and loved the experience. The problem is that the speed twin has a lot of competition in the Japanese brands, some Italian brands too. And the bonneville T120, has none. To my eyes the BMW R Nine T is not directly competing with the T120 but more on side to side with the speed Twin. We all know that the Kawasaki 900 RS is directly competing with the speed twin and it is cheaper. The engines are different, but the bikes are on the same segment of the market, I think. In terms of the video comparison, when I tested the speed twin, I felt the good brakes and the not so comfortable seat of the machine and I immediately inclined my self in the T120 direction, once that it has a very exclusive look, and very different from every other bike. That fact, the classic look, “spoke” to me. I came from a Yamaha XSR 900, that Cp3 engine, was something! So, after that, I couldn’t go for the Speed Twin, very alike bikes, but less adrenaline’s riding sensations. Bought myself a KTM SDGT and went for the Triumph T120 for the relaxed sunday`s afternoon rides with my Mrs. I am fully satisfied with my rides. ✌️
Great video. Thank you. My 3 year finance plan is just about to finish on my T100 and would like to do a little upgrade ;). Planning to test ride speed twin and T120 end of this month. Love the look of both for different reasons. Based on your review they are both awesome bikes. It will probably just come down to the test ride. Wish I could have each for a week or so. It’s going to be hard to make a decision after half hour test ride ;(. Thanks again for the video. Ride safe!
Went to Triumph West London this morning..and came back home with T120 ace cafe edition 😁 oh she’s beautiful. It was sad to say good bye to my T100 but, I think I can get used to T120 in no time 👍
I sat on both these bikes and at 6ft felt more cramped on the speed twin. I needed up with the T120 gold edition. I was about to give up on Triumph for various reasons, but when I set eyes on that T120 gold edition I just melted and handed over $17,000 bucks…..
Cannot fault your review Andy, I owned a 2018 T120 and suspect had the Speed Twin been out then I would have chosen it. 100% accurate description of the T120’s shortcomings, but still an attractive bike.
@@joshnnik Hi Roger ! How funny is that ? I am nearly 64. An old mans bike. Eh !!! Came across someone in NZ who is 72 and he started riding at 62. He sold his T120 after many years and then bought a Speed twin. Speed twin is a lot more manageable. Being a lot lighter and moded differently helps. Am looking forward to watching Mecums motorcycle auctions starting on April 28th. Vincent Black lightning, and A Crocker will be on the block. Love the vintage era of motorcycling. For me I like the aesthetics of the classics. Of not much into the new era, but I am realistic to know time waits for nobody. Auckland. NZ
@@johnmartin7158 Thanks John, quite agree with those comments. I've been riding(legally) since I was 16, I p/ex'd my Africa Twin for the T120 because it reminded me so much of the Tiger 90 I had back in the 60's. After the T120 I bought my current bike which is a BMW F900XR. I'm very pleased with it and the wife is happy, as she says, no one can tell how old you are under a full face helmet......
Thanks for a great review, and informative comparison.....Has to be a Speed Twin! Why would anyone bother with less performance, poorer handling, more weight and less effective brakes etc?......And for very nearly the same money!!
I have the Thruxton 1200 (not the R) so basically a speed twin with cosmetic difference's ,do like the way bike handles and goes (had sports bikes before ) . My only downside on bike it seems bit snatchy on throttle at low speed , might just be my bike but few others have said about it . Would love ride on the T120 as slight loss in performance wouldn't bother me as the Thruxton has more than I really need ( I'm 65 now ) great honest video though
Bought Street Twin in 2017, it lacked a bit of power so I traded it in for a T120 black weeks before they upgraded it with extra 10bhp. Love the T120, though a little heavy, but 3 months later they brought out Speed Twin. If buying now, well I preferred the 1960s style (t120) to the 1970s (speed twin), like having a centre stand for servicing (only available on t120) but hate
but hate cleaning wire wheels. T120 is comfortable enough for my 300mile day trips through Wales, and I guess I will probably stick with it unless I win the lottery.
@@allanshort8264 I'm quite tall 6' 2" and I think the sitting position of the T120 would suit me better with the pegs in a more forward lower position than the Speed Twin and the bars giving a more unright sitting position. Looking forward to the dealer network opening up so I get get a test ride!
Thank you. Now I know what to get. I sent you a question on IG last week about this. I guess you were already brewing this that’s why I didn’t hear back. Lol
Having owned a T120, I’d go for the Speed Twin - mostly on riding position - I just didn’t get on with my knees not gripping in and helping steering, having come from something sportier where you felt part of the bike, rather than being perched on top
I do think it's subjective, personal decision. Not surprised you picked the Speed Twin but then I do own a ThruxtonR which is more akin to the Speed Twin in terms of performance. That said a few years down the line I can see myself preferring the more relaxed riding position and performance of the T120 over the ThruxtonR but I would have to do a fair bit of customisation to a standard T120. Great review 👍
Interesting video 'you old trickster', its the back to back that really tells them apart but if you only rode one and not the other you'd never notice the points you raise. On a random style note, the T120 feels very 1950s/60s, whereas I see the Speed Twin as more 1970s/80s in terms of aesthetics. Cheers for the video!
I’m glad we concur Daniel!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Your Speed Twin review a ways back was what persuaded me to switch from the T120. Cheers!
Absolutely spot on I think I’d go for all black T120 lovely sounds but les polish. Thanks buddy cracking comments
What about the spoked rims? I’d hate to be caught out (again) with a flat. Cost me a fortune.
T120 all day. But I'm biased being a T120 owner. It's just a great all around bike for those past the hooligan stage of life.
Mines a good paperweight.
True! All day! So classy.
Certainly not me!
You’re timing is perfect. I’m looking at these bikes right now!
Glad to help!
Cheers Brad appreciated!
Indeed Simon - my Speed twin has heated grips by the way (an essential here in the UK!)
Fair enough!
Thank you for another great video! I’d go for the T120 because I’m 6’5” tall and is more comfy out of the 2. If I was 5’10” or less than the Speed Twin for sure. But overall styling I love the T120!
You read my mind, sir. Exactly what I was thinking and you make a video on it.. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Speed Twin all day. Tested one and loved it.
Sounds good to me Nick!
The 2021 T120 will have Bembo front brakes and lighter rims.
At 74, gentlemanly, yet powerful, sounds wonderful!! My Valkyrie is getting a bit heavy. Hope to find a good T120 … Thank you for all you do.
I tend to take my ST out more often because it provides a completely
different riding experience compared to my big touring bike.
Yes the same with mine - couldn't be more different to my Panigale or GS.....
Yes I thoroughly recommend "retirement" (i'm busier now than I've ever been!)
@@TheMissendenFlyer These Triumph blacks ,the bobber, bonneville, and NEW ROCKET 3, how are they for corrosion ? Can you park them outside and forget ? Maybe hose off once a month?
I traded in my 2013 Bonneville SE for the Speed Twin. I loved the SE, but the Speed Twin is just better in every department.
@@lawrenceennis2263 The SE is everything you need in a motorcycle...
The Street Twin is overkill...
Nice one Rob....
I thought the street twin and speed twin are exactly the same bikes .
Triumph renamed street twin to speed twin
I've got the speed twin and my dad has the bonneville t120. We occasionally swap over and have a go on each others bike when we go out. Personally I prefer my speed twin because its comfy enough for a long Sunday ride out but it's got that bit more to it when you want to have some fun in those corners that just make you grin. Not slating the bonniville off tho. Love the bike to pieces. But the speed twin just slightly edges it out. Cheers for the review Andy :)
Yes I agree Andy....
Thruxton R vs Speed Twin? I think you got the right bike with the thruxton personally.
Thanks for that as ever Trevor!
Awesome review Andy I’m thinking speed twin for me as I’m only a Short fellow as you have mentioned before thanks for this in-depth review absolutely spot on. Thanks again Jimbo from Birmingham England 👌😄
Glad to be of use!
Great review, I am considering changing my street twin for the speed twin, I have tested one and was very impressed.
Hey TMF. You could argue that all modern retro bikes play with fakery. All try to give us older riders those wonderful reminders of our childhood whilst also appealing to new riders with their sharper looks and connectivity. Not to mention ABS, engine and suspension advances of course. Great times to be a biker!
True!
Love them both but as I get older the T120 appeals more plus better leg comfort for tall people!
@@Cuzzazbuzz It's the 'older' bit I mention as that comes with knackered knees that don't bend as they should!!
I’m 6’2” and have a Speed Twin, and the comfort is just fine. I tried the full Bonneville range, and soon as I tried the ST it was game over .... such a great ride! Big smiles, lovely soundtrack (I’ve the V&H pipes too) 👍
On the fence here. I just wish the Speed Twin was more pillion friendly with a substantial grab rail or even a low back rest for those rare occasions.
Not a minute have I regretted getting the Speed Twin, that power delivery puts a smile on my face every time I open the throttle 😁
You and me both - surprisingly spritely!
Nice comparison,I'm in the dilemma of speed twin or t120. Shame they didn't fit the thruxton forks to the speed twin.
I’ve ridden both and totally agree with your assessment. Can’t go wrong with either one!
I would love to see a 2021 Moto Guzzi v7, Triumph Street Twin, Royal Enfield Interceptor, Kawasaki w800 kind of shootout.
second this as those are on my list to buy!
I REALLY struggle to keep my beady little eyes off of your Street Triple in the background that i almost forgot there was a review going on. Great vid as always
Fair enough!
Good to see a back to back same manufacturer review. Surprised at the weight difference, tested a T120 and thought it was heavy to move around, would be good to test the speed twin. Top work.
Thanks for watching!
Nice comparison. It's the speed twin for me in almost every way I think. I really like it's brutish image & performance.
Same here!
Yes I hope so too!
Glad you enjoyed it...and yes, I love the Speedmaster too, the new one looks gorgeous!
Whichever one you own is the best 😄.
I really enjoyed your older bike reviews. Not all of us can afford new. Just a thought. Keep up with the great work 👍
Yes I’m hoping to do some older bike reviews soon Richard....
@@TheMissendenFlyer great look forward to it
A good review between both Triumphs.
Thanks for watching Bob!
I was hoping to find a video comparing these two bikes and let me say you smashed it.
Excellent video !!!
I have the scrambler 1200xc, but I also like the speed twin 1200.
Cheers !
Glad I could help!
Apparently I'm old now (says t'wife) so I guess it'll have to be T120. Oh no, that'll be tough. The 'gentleman's ride' cheered me up no end !
Fair enough!
This is the review complete with spec comparison and riding comparison that I've been waiting for. Great work on this one, cards fell about how I thought, but if I go this direction I'll put a leg over both. Thanks for the top shelf work.
Thanks for watching and stopping by!
I've never ridden a triumph. Two bikes to test ride.
Thanks for the great vid 😁👍
No problem 👍
That was a very helpful back to back comparison. Would have to agree the Speed Twin does it for me as well. The prices, as close as they are, really surprised me. 👍🏼 😎
Yes I was quite surprised about that when I looked it up too Bradley....
Yep good points Stuart - thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for this excellent and thorough comparison. I am in the market for a Triumph Bonneville and have been looking at these two as my most desired choices.
Glad it was helpful!
We;; they have just announced their revised T120's that have some nice touches over this model......
I love the look of the Speed Twin, but still can’t get the RNineT out of my mind...
Yes I can imagine it would be a squeeze for a 6 footer.....
Triumphs kinda suit a lot of us who are under 6 foot. Nice and low seating position.
Any of those you'll love.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks, I'm sure I will. I only considered the Speedmaster after watching your review earlier this week.
Wow are those roads narrow, surprised those huge licence plates fit through.
Really like your reviews.
Glad you like them!
And yet another great review from TMF! Thank you, Andy!
You may well be right - it looks the same physical engine…
Always raining in Missenden! 😄 Great Video though, shame it's taken me two years to watch it!
Nice review, I’m thinking about upgrading my street twin to a T120, I’m probably going to go for the speed twin. I’d keep the street twin but running out of room.
Tell me about it!
Thanks for this side by side comparison, very informative! I’m considering to swap my clumsy (but comfortable) Road King for a Triumph T120… 😅
Good choice!
@@TheMissendenFlyer thing is, my height is 1.96… 🥴
Great review TMF; honest and clear on all the important bits! Thank you!
Thank you for watching Nick.
I was looking at Scramblers but your reviews on the Speed Twin are changing my mind.
I currently have a Z650, so know what to expect with the naked bike feel. The modern classic look is absolutely stunning, this bike sounds great even in video, and looks like it's a monster to ride.
Well I’m a fan!
Both very cool bikes. I think the Speed Twin has that muscular look you don't see a lot in these modern retro bikes. It is probably #1 or 2 on my bike lust list right now. Just wish they'd do an RS version with some upgraded bits! Come on Triumph!
Triumph have told us a newly updated Speed Twin is on the way - your wish may come true!
Enjoy Brian!
The Speed Twin looks more modern. Both are great looking bikes. Mirrors on the Twin for sure.
This is a great review Andy, well done.
Thank you kindly Ken!
I have the T120 Black and love it. It has the V&H cans, the Fox rear shocks, tail tidy, Monza style filler cap and bar end mirrors.
How much improvement in ride quality do your Fox shocks provide?
Great to have keepers in the garage!
@@TheMissendenFlyer isn’t it? You’re 100% right. That’s the target I aim for👌🏻

Ride safe!
Let me know which you decide!
Went to Triumph West London this morning..and came back home with T120 ace cafe edition 😁 oh she’s beautiful. It was sad to say good bye to my T100 but, I think I can get used to T120 in no time 👍
Great comparison video as usual.
Can I just ask you Andy how does the Speed Twin compare with the Rnine t?As you've reviewed both
Thanks👍
I sat on both these bikes and at 6ft felt more cramped on the speed twin. I needed up with the T120 gold edition. I was about to give up on Triumph for various reasons, but when I set eyes on that T120 gold edition I just melted and handed over $17,000 bucks…..
Brilliant review, thanks and I think the Speed Twin will be my next bike.
Cannot fault your review Andy, I owned a 2018 T120 and suspect had the Speed Twin been out then I would have chosen it. 100% accurate description of the T120’s shortcomings, but still an attractive bike.
Yes I agree - the T120 is a great looker for sure...
Exactly, T120 many short comings, but I plan to keep mine.
@@johnmartin7158 I sold mine after 2 yrs, the wife said that it was an old man’s bike, I’m 70!

Great video, and love your infectious excitement for the bikes! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Hooligan versus gentleman ride 😂😂 there you go, you summarized it well there!
That T120 is gorgeous.
Thanks for a great review, and informative comparison.....Has to be a Speed Twin! Why would anyone bother with less performance, poorer handling, more weight and less effective brakes etc?......And for very nearly the same money!!
Exactly!
Great vid as usual chose the speed twin collecting tomorrow !
Congratulations!
Enjoyed your review, however the new T120 is being released in April with a 7kg weight saving and a number of other improvements.
That is the I am waiting for..
@@allanshort8264 wire wheels were one of the things that put me off the T120 and get a Speed Twin. I'm really not like TMF , I HATE cleaning !
Thank you for clear details and explanation! Really helped me to coose what I exactly want for myself.
You're very welcome!
I would definitely pick the speed twin........great review & enjoyable vlog..........stay safe........thanks for sharing
My pleasure Ian, thanks for the nice comment!
I was literally thinking about this yesterday! Great timing I think!
That's awesome!
Great video it has to be the speed twin when you open it up it really takes you by surprise fantastic bike stay safe looking forward to more videos
Yes it does!
Thank´s .A very good comparision. Just helped me in my decidision which bike to buy.
Thank you. Now I know what to get. I sent you a question on IG last week about this. I guess you were already brewing this that’s why I didn’t hear back. Lol
Could be that, or that I was overwhelmed with messages on the various platforms (sorry about that) - my main focus is TH-cam....
Speed Twin with V&H is one of the best sounds of any bike. Nice comparo Andy.
Couldn't agree more!
I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts (when you do the monthly bike news) on the recent MCN compare between the RnineT and Speed Twin.
Stay tuned Dominic!
