Planet of the Vapes: why is there a war on e-cigarettes?

  • E-cigarette use has exploded and has been celebrated as the greatest aid to smoking cessation ever invented. Yet, as of 2016 in the UK, e-cigarette manufacturers will have to choose between being regulated as a medicine by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency or adhere to strict new EU regulations similar to tobacco products. The Welsh Health Ministry even want to ban their use in public places. The movement to ban or hyper-regulate e-cigarettes seems less to do with people’s health than a concern to attack and control our lifestyle choices. In this fascinating debate filmed at the Battle of Ideas, speakers tell it like it is and Chris Snowden argues compellingly public health policy needs to be stubbed out.

    3) I am a smoker for the last 34 years, and yes I hate the cigarettes producers, reason? Simple, they've added addictive ingredients which I did not know about for years, it was not enough to accept people buying their product for pleasure, but to make them addicted to the ingredients they use its a shame, and I am against it...
Took me 8 years, countless attempts to stop smoking with every aid that is available with no results, but when finally I bought the famous e-cigarette I am successful, and I managed to reduce down from 30 a day to 4-5 a day in only 2 month. I call that success!

You can buy replacement glass tubes to get a higher capacity tank. Tbh these regulations have probably increased revenue for vape retailers as they can sell you more products to get around them. Plus it's harder to stop smoking now using a cheaper, less powerful device using 18mg nicotine instead of 32mg like I used to stop smoking with a cheap ego pen so you can't really get an effective alternative cheaply anymore. Now you need a more expensive, powerful Ecig to be able to get a decent nicotine dose.

I am a smoker of 45 years and now I am not a smoker but a vaper. I had no intention of giving up the smokes but something happened that made me find a way to not go crazy. I drive a truck and my company bought us new trucks and ordered us to not smoke in them. I am a nicotine addict and it keeps me calm and happy when I drive so now what? Can't just throw my job in as need money like anyone else. Picked up a vape with nicotine 3 weeks ago with the idea to use it at work and smoke cigs at home after work. By the end of only one week I decided to not buy smokes as my fix from the ecig has worked so I keep my $87 the Australian government was extorting from me every week. Greatest gift ever invented for a smoker. My ecig tastes better and my addiction is fed and no stress at all. Amazing that anyone would wan't to not give me the choice to a better future. Backwards Australia makes me import my nicotine juice from overseas as it's illegal to sell in a shop here. We are so far behind the UK it is not funny. At 3:18 the guy representing "the nanny state" says "if you've got a war, you've got to agree what the battle lines are..." and he goes on to think it's about health and statistics waffling an awful lot and having no clue where the battle lines are... I tell you the battle lines are between the big multinational corporations, with billions of pounds at their disposal to lobby for laws in their favour, and the small business owners, smokers, ex smokers and vapers, who have collectively raised the vaping industry from being nothing to being the fastest growing industry today... and it's been done completely independent of these large corporations and without government. Writing now in 2019 one thing particularly worries me. I recently relapsed after a 46 day cold turkey cigarette quit. Although I bought a packet of cigarettes and smoked them I was determined not to go back to smoking tobacco full time. I am 58, had been smoking since I was 15, and had quit following a frighteningly bad bronchial chest infection. So I went to a local vape shop and bought the necessary equipment. I have been very impressed and the product has given me hope. But the thing that worries me is the prospect that government legislation will eventually make it as financially punitive to the consumer as tobacco had become. I had begun to find that crippling. Which was another important incentive for my original quit, aside from health.

There is a clip on here of pulminologist with arguably the most experience on the topic talking about a study he did where he studied the impact of vaping on a bunch of individuals. All the individuals participating in the study (over a number of years) maintained their health status despite having vaped frequently for years. This well known, first class pulminologist stated it was safe- case closed. He went on to say that there may be findings in another 20 or so years but it would likely effect 2-3% of vapers. That's 2 in every 100 people as opposed to 75 of every 100 smokers.

The entire smear campaign demonstrates how mainstream news and their sources engineer public opinion with coordinated persistent disinformation across multiple countries simultaneously (US, UK, India, Australia, NZ, Indonesia, etc). Their agenda becomes the 'solution' to a 'problem' that they themselves have manufactured.

I can watch this type of 'debate' all day long. I'm a vaper trying to quit smoking and I am continually seeking data to validate or dis-prove the crappy media stories that are knocking the action of vaping while almost validating the act of smoking. The stories I call crappy include one side of the facts which leads an under educated person to believe what is written - which is not factual data but some writers opinion. This panel, although somewhat siding with vaping, was able to clearly make points based on facts, plead for more research and use the valid research that's already been done. Nice job!

No, no, no...Ok if people are going to talk about nicotine, wouldn't it be nice if they at least researched a little bit the subject. Nicotine is a stimulant much like caffeine. It its natural form it is not addictive (otherwise people who vape could not reduce the level of nicotine as they vape.) In its deprotonated or "free base" form (which is what the tobacco companies did to make it more addictive) nicotine is very addictive and has the withdrawal side effects such as irritability, etc.
The longer people vape, and as they reduce the level of nicotine in their liquids, they will notice that their desire for a "fix" is lower, to the point that there comes a time when people do not notice they need the dosage of nicotine.
This is the problem I have with this kind of fora, they have people who are not experienced, who do not vape, and who have no science training, therefore assumptions that are untrue keep getting perpetrated and passed along.
I quit watching the video at this point, clearly the information is inaccurate and I have no desire to watch more of the same.

Just a comment about smokers returning to cig's, having smoked 20-40 a day for 40 years, I've left cig's completely behind in less than a year. I've smoked one here and there but have come to realize that cig's are a complete waste of time and money. Vaping only uses the e-liquid when I vape, where a cig burns up.
As the lady said, I enjoyed smoking. The act of it, as well as the feeling. I get the same thing from vaping. It's relaxing, helps me to focus, and the cost of it when compared to smoking, it's a heck of a lot cheaper.
I can also say that I have seen an improvement in my health as well.

simple answer is there are certain companies with vested interests in both tobacco sales and smoking cessation product sales. With increasing numbers of people turning to vaping with mods and tanks, far fewer non smokers are starting smoking... there are fewer new smokers because they are going straight to vape. Many smokers are using mods and tanks to quit tobacco.
Also smokers are now far less likely to use cessation products available on the NHS, such as patches, gum and w/e else is available... this is hurting the pharmaceutical companies. The war on vaping with moves to both regulate various aspects of it and provide vaping on the NHS simply boils down to monopolisation of a market which has emerged and broken free.

I'm 27 and have never smoked. I don't drink or use any psychoactives save for nicotine and cannabis. Those two, used carefully, allowed me to get off nearly 20 years of antidepressant and anxiety meds which each has a laundry list of horrible side effects and dependence issues. I lost 130lb switching to self medication, I'm no longer prediabetic, my lungs are in fantastic shape, blood pressure perfect, resting heart rate in the 40s, no problems running or hiking. The socially acceptable medicines were literally killing me. I take a day off a week and don't have the withdrawals my dad has on cigs. My grandpa quit a 60 year smoking habit cold turkey after it gave him a heart attack, and still craves them every single day more than 15 years later.
The beautiful thing about vapes is the difficulty in effectively banning them. The mods just regulate the power going to the coil, the coils can be assembled with commonly available parts, the juice is mostly kitchen supplies and banning liquid nicotine would work about as well as banning THC-buy it cheap from your local black market representative. Out of more than a dozen doctors who've asked if I smoke or drink, all were unconcerned with the two chemicals and a few outright encouraged the cannabis use (spinal stenosis w/ arthritis). The resentful, ban-happy turds need to refocus on some other pet peeve. An inconsequential health risk vs. caging hundreds of thousands of people. Pathetic.

To be fair, cannabis can be harmful as well, speaking from personal experience, as I smoked every day almost for over 10 years. I got really bad anxiety and paranoia from it.
But I think it's mostly relevant for people who already have anxiety issues. But we are all different, if it works for you then great.
At least Cannabis is not that hard to quit (by that I mean when you decide to do it, it took me 10 years to make the decision, as I was afraid to live without cannabis) compared to cigarettes. When addicted to Cannabis it's almost completey psychological. I've tried quitting cigarettes many times, never worked. Just got my vape. And I've been smoking 2-3 cigarettes a day since. Really glad I made the decision to get a vape

Picked up a cape in the hope of reducing and did immediately to 2 smokes a day for 3 days. The next morning I went to have smoke and was disgusted by it and threw it out. Did not touch another for 3 weeks. Had 1 smoke with friends at a bar over a drink. Yep had it but did not like it straight back on the vape. 3months later I went to work and forgot my juice at home. I had 3 cigs left in the pack from when I had stopped and was on my own not able to leave and get some more juice so through the day I had them the minute I could I was back on vape and did not need or want a cig. Simular thing happened 1 more time where I had 2 cigs but back on the vape asap. That's just my experience and if the vape is there then I don't want a smoke at all. Just saying coz I'm sure others out there may have had simular situations. Also really bugs me when you can't vape where you can't smoke

Same for me I smoked for 45 years and only been vaping 3 weeks. The end of the first week I stopped buying smokes and when a bloke at work gives me a smoke I have smoked it but it now tastes so bad to me. My mind needs the nicotine not the smoke and the vape tastes way better. So very easy to give up the smokes and receive my treat of nicotine that any ban on them is ludicrous

I was a smoker for 27 years (around 20 cigs/day), I knew almost from day 1, smoke was bad for my health, so, I promise to my self I will quit smoke when I reach 40 years old, I reached, but I dind't, can't quite, like almost all smokers, you cant quit, even when I'm never ever did smoke in work, it wasn't a problem to me to stay 8 or 9 hours without smoke, I almost never has with me my tobacco while working, this make me think all this years, that for me, quit from tobacco could be "easy". You can't quit because you go to a bar, or whatever with your friends, family etc, and there will be always someone smoking, and is near to impossible quit from tobacco if you smell and see someone smoking close to you, BUT, 5 months ago, I tried vaping, and I'm 100% SURE, I never go back to tobacco (at the end I did quit, 3 years later, but its not far from my original plan), and if someone is there smoking close to me, I dont care, I just take some inhales from my ecig and that's all (well, now I need to make some room betwen smokers and me, because the smell of tobacco is disgusting to me), If you are a old and/or heavy smoker, please, try ecigs, do your self a favor, I tell you from my heart, is not easy, and will take some days, DAYS (not months or weeks) to you to get used to, I did, and I'm not a special one in all, even when I did with one device not recommended for beginners, supposed to take more time to get used to, at second day, I already knew that tobacco was dead to me, today, just 5 months after, I take ejuice with 1mg nicotine the half of the time, because I already vape nicotine free ejuice, and when my last reserves of nicotine ejuice are done, I'm not interested in nicotine anymore, just the pleasure of vaping my ejuice is all I want/need, nicotine speech is OK, but never forget that the point is to quit nicotine too, not only tobacco, and for me, it was easy, just cuting down every month a bit the nicotine percent, I promise to you all smokers, it wasn't unpleasure for me, IT WAS THE OPPOSITE, vaping its a pleasure to me, how tobacco never was, and never cant be, is not risk free, I know, but man, if someone like WHO or AECC tell you that vaping is 95% more secure... I mean, there is nothing to argue. Don't jump into ecigs right away, do your research first, and try whatever device is one of the more recommended for beginners, then you are gonna discover by yourself what device/ejuice is your ideal.

Did he say Vaping is expensive? Maybe if you are the "Hobbyist Vapor" but, i was spending $300 per month for my cigarette habit (California name brands $8 - $10 per pack).
    Now, i quit a 20 year habit thanks to VAPING! I buy 2 bottles of E-Liquid per month at $16 - $20 per month! Its a no-brainer!
When you switch, that will be the most expensive month:
The most I put out to buy my first 2 vapes (to ensure during battery charging, i always had one to keep me from having a cigarette) the cost was $175 plus 2 liquids less than $200! I was still ahead $100!
So even the switch cost me less than my cigarette habit!
The key to stop smoking is "When you want a smoke, draw on that vape 3 or 4 good enhales to get your nicotine and the urge is gone."
I went from 6mg nicotine to 3mg nicotine in 3 months. I hope to go to zero and then who knows, maybe I'll stop vaping?
But what "pharmaceutical nicotine replacement" did not do for me? They didnt substitute the "habit of ritual".
_Smokers smoke for stress, but also with morning coffee, after a meal, and to socialize with their smoking friends and at the Pub._ Sorry if non-smokers cant understand these "hard wire rituals"; it is what it is.
The benefit too? My sister and i smoked together. Shes been smoking for 50 years. She watched me quit and finally asked to try my vape. She took a few draws and liked the taste! So i bought her one for her birthday, got it charged and primed with Caramel Vanilla.
She now has reduced her smoking significantly! Shes cut from 2 packs a day to 6 cigarettes!
Stop the attack on vaping. The problem is always:
*_Teens make poor decisions. Black Marketers always capitalise on profitable markets._*
The vaping industry in America are required to let the FDA monitor their LIQUID manufacture. Stores and Websites are supposed to have AGE RESTRICTIONS.
*_And PARENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO EDUCATE THEIR CHILDREN! But they can't educate if they refuse to educate themselves - and, our POLITICIANS FALL INTO THAT CATEGORY TOO!_*

I wish I would have seen this years ago when it came out. I enjoyed the arguments produced and particularly enjoyed where Lorien Jollye came from. Instead of coming at it from some kind of know it all of her field. She came at it from a much more natural position. To me, she made many more compelling arguments. As to the guy who said a lot of vapers weren't coming from a background of smoking cigarettes. I don't really see that as needing to matter. Those people could have easily started with cigs also, at least they started and are most likely sticking with the least harmful choice of the two. That being said I know a lot of vapers personally who didn't smoke before but also use 0 nic juices. So people who enjoy the hobby itself can still do it with minimal harm.

Nicotine replacement products are useless for 96 out of 100 people - including myself. Why? Because it's the habit and NOT the nicotine that makes it so hard to quit smoking. I wish that those in charge would finally realize the facts. Tobacco kills. Vaping doesn't. Being able to keep the habit and to substitute the smoke with steam (vape) is the key. It's essential for the success. And the lack of it us the reason why Nicorette fails.

Makes you think that smokers night also want others to see and inhale their expired/used cigarette smoke?

I was a 45+ a day smoker and had tried everything that you can get at a chemist. I tried 5 times to stop and found that when I started again I found I smoked more....
Then I went into a vape shop, fortunately for me it was a professional store with people who knew what to do. That was seven years ago and I haven't touched a cigarette since. It made a massive difference to my health.
Sadly the government's of many countries that are in the pockets of the tobacco industry.... That's all of them by the way, are desperately trying to tax the hell out of vaping products or make them illegal. They don't get any tax from vape devices so its days are numbered.
Unless we ALL stand up against this and stop allowing the government to steamroller over us the industry is doomed and so are the people who want to get of the cancer sticks. I think they often forget that they work for US ! We pay their wages so who the hell are they to tell us how to run our lives ?

To be honest even for a not smoker vaping can help in alot of ways. As example in my family there are a ton of diabetics. Pepole have now the chance to get sweets without the risk of sugar, what is actual a big health problem in the world. And those things are to 100% for kids. Then for nicotine, you dont need it for vaping and then its a big difference if you take it to you with a cig or with a vape.
If you take it with a vape your body will get rid of your nicotine addiction. Then its no posion in the amounts you take it to you with a vape. Then its at the same lvl with coffein in therms of addiction if you take it to you with a vape.

I go without for a couple days. I am advanced enough to be able to use a mechanical mod, so I have back ups, but in a pinch.. you could soak a bit of cotton in juice and heat it on a spoon. Switching back to tobacco is totally vulgar. It tastes worse after quitting than it did when you first started smoking. (mainly because you are used to full inhales, not little trial puffs) Oh, and here in Canada, apparently, they will give smokers a kind of ecig to give them their nic fix. Not to sure how those work, but i heard a nurse talking to a patient in another room about it.

I have plenty of backup mods also, so if one breaks I can switch to another one until the broken one is replaced. Even if they all broke, there are plenty of shops that sell cheap ego & ce4 kits for under £5 to keep me going until better mods are bought. There is always a way to ensure you keep vaping.

Smoked for 40 years, got an el cheapo vape with 2 ml tank and some juice to give vaping a go. 24 hours after starting I tried a ciggie and put it out after 2 drags. It tasted like horse shite. Next day got a decent mod and tank - 5.5 ml and have not thought about having a smoke since. Can't even tolerate the smell of them. I had early signs of COPD from smoking and even this has disappeared. All in the space of 7 weeks and only running the vape at 100c and 8 watt - no need for high heat, now mixing my 12mg juice with 0 nic flavours.
From my research I have discovered that It is not the nicotine in tobacco that is addictive - O.K it is about as addictive as a hot cuppa joe, it is all the other crap they mix in, plus the byproduct of the combustion process - tar, with its myriad of compounds and chemicals that is highly addictive and deadly. They say that vaping is just as bad for you. I would rather the 4 POSSIBLE* poisons than the hundreds of poisons in one cigarette.
I will continue to vape and risk my life, just like I do when i jump in the car to duck to the shops. Even living is toxic - it will eventually kill us all.
    * This is also debatable as the "official" testing was done at such extreme levels that it would be impossible to vape. The temperatures used were that extreme the metal in the coils started to release toxins because they were breaking down.

To a person enjoying classical music this might be torture. I also enjoy to go to a gym 3 times a week and purposefully hurt my muscles on a microscopic level by specific exercises I repeat meticulously in each session. Again this might be torture to other persons. The point of the libertarian society is that I can mind my own business as long as I don't hurt others.

Smoking is 80% psychological; all research shows this. Smoking is smoking, the fear of not smoking pushes people to vape. Just quit, trust in the fact brain receptors will die, walk through it for 90 days and be done with it. Quit failing, quit making excuses, be done with it. Walk through it day-by-day and you will wind-up free as a bird from cigarettes.

    2) Indeed the idea to be completely smoke free is unrealistic, it can be achievable perhaps in 100 years from now on, but in truth there is no way as cigarettes are produced, and sold. To much talk as usual, and nothing really done about it as usual. If you really want to stop smokers, the cigarettes should not be produced at all, but MONEY talks, and there is nothing more convincing than MONEY!

John Rhodes Really! Tea and chocolate? Have nicotine? I drink lotsa tea, diff. Kinds black, green and herbals, found out I’m extremely allergic to dandelion, it’s related to the ragweed plant, no wonder! That stuff literally took my breath away, couldn’t breathe. Just FYI.

This debate is even more relevant in 2019. There are two distinct facts surrounding it (even if the latter wasn't fully acknowledged when this discussion took place): (1) vaping is a valid harm reduction technique that allows people to quit smoking who could not previously do so; and (2) vaping is attractive to underage users and is becoming more attractive all the time. But the fact remains that just because #1 is an extraordinary opportunity and #2 an extraordinary problem in no way means that one should cancel the other out. Quite the contrary, in fact.

Nicotine is addictive in the same way religion is addictive . The young bloke talking about culture is spot on.
