More videos about Psycho-Pass will always be welcome. The more time advances, the more evident becomes the fact that our future comes closer to Brave New World than 1984.

When he talked about how art and creativity is stifled in Brave New World, the first thing I thought of was: wokeness, diversity checkboxes, and politically correction. Scary how the dystopia thought up in 1932 is coming closer and closer

Yeah 1964 it's something that difficulty would work in a large scale, but it can go like that in certain places, i mean i'd say that North Korea is just a less advanced 1984.
Now Brave New World is indeed closer to our actual future.

Psycho pass is one of those anime with a really thought provoking message without sacrificing its "easy to watch" nature. Sometimes its really easy to say when a series is really "deep" but most of the time they fall into obscurity because they can be hard to digest for most people. Psycho-pass, ironically was able to balance that element and made it a really enjoyable action TV series with a masterfully crafted philosophical background. I've only seen a few anime do this, and psycho-pass is probably one of the best examples of this.

the stress level system is such an amazing integration in the anime. I love the contradictory scenarios of low stress level of psychopath, while we have an actual real innocent person got trapped into high level stress situation & then "suffered" by the system, often to the extreme AKA death.
Also, I might be interpreted not accurately since it has been a long time that I watched the anime (all seasons). I think the anime also kinda subliminally implied that Sibyl system is a rather a more matriarchal totalitarian system, where emotions become the fundamental decision making in which govern the society.

    • @darkprinc979

It's not so much that emotions are used for the decision making, it's that bad actors manipulate the emotions of the people so that their decisions gain public support. The emotional bs is just lies and subterfuge used to take advantage of useful idiots. This is how Marxist movements always gain traction, because if people were acting out of reason they would see the falsehoods for what they are and the movements would flounder.

I agree, this has to be one of the best anime's I've watched. And this is an incredibly well thought out analysis of the show. You even mentioned things that I didn't even realize!(like kogami and makashima being ying and yang)
Along with this, the subsequent movies and seasons are incredible as well, as they dive into some other ideas and problems that come as part of this kind of society and issues that our society has a problem with(for example, judging a group, which is interesting because the Sybil system takes a contrary view to that of a movie like Irobot, which is interesting due to the intrinsic purpose of the Sybil system).

One of the many aspects of human civilization I don't come across often, is the principle of collective understanding. In cases like Psycho Pass, the line is drawn at an impossibility, or single point of reference. One person bearing the truth, one mind being enlightened. Yet, in reality we see quite the opposite, and ironically so. The reach of these messages, the sheer existence of their stories, is what prevents the possibility in the first place.
It's as the Yin and Yang suggest, with order there shall come chaos, and vice-versa. There is no doubt in my mind at least, that this will always be true. With any form of discussion, whether spoken or silenced, there is change, and by extension perception. With perception comes possibility, and possibility is the first form of uncertainty.
Although uncertainty may be seen as synonymous with chaos, it is this misunderstanding which prevents its true expression. Uncertainty in my eyes is the indifference which provides order and chaos. The medium with which choices sublimate and take form. If it were any farther abstracted, then uncertainty would simply not exist.
Before the birth of the universe, there is the idea of all things mixing in the ether of nothingness. It is this nothingness, this supposed ether, which is uncertainty itself.
Choices as they come about, are the birth of uncertainty. The gift, the sun, and the light and dark within all of creation. In the aftermath of uncertainty lies three pathways. It is only through the traversal of uncertainty, that one can escape a world of chaos or order. A society must naturally traverse uncertainty. A singular place of life and death, a shared existence, permeates a collective understanding. The uncertainty which has brought the order of humanity, prevents the expression of its destruction by nature.
It may sound naive, yet there is no greater fear than a humanity hushed, by a hand not its own.

I love psychopass season 1 for the same reasons. It presents us with a real philosophical dilemma and a "dystopian" system that you can understand people getting behind. The Sybil system has all but eliminated crime and it places people in jobs they're suited for, etc. It's only when you start looking closer that you see the problems. And the villain has a good point: he's fighting for freedom but even if you agree with him in theory you know he'd do more harm than good.

One thing I'd like to point out: Sybil arguably doesn't need to be removed, but, rather, changed. Akane recognises the use of Sybil while also being aware of its flaws, but while the flaws can be dealt with, the benefits might be irreplaceable. After all, Sybil was the only solution that worked to make Japan the only peaceful country in the world. Then, Sybil might just have to be made more human through the development of empathy. In this regard, I think Akane is the key piece, for we've already seen that Sybil has changed a few times simply because Akane argued that it would be better for it if it did. So far, Sybil cannot dispute Akane's logic, which might make Akane the one with the most sway over how society is managed. And because Akane is highly humanistic, Sybil could potentially become so as well and a true utopia might be achieved.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but having read Brave New World, there is an amazing anime that is also worthy of being the BNW of anime if not more so. Shinsekai Yori or From The New World is a fantastic exploration of a future society, but I think it does an even better job of showing a “new world.” It similarly has its own facade of perfection that is betrayed by the cruel secrets used to prop up the order of this new world. I love Psycho-Pass dearly, but I think From The New World is a masterpiece and grossly unknown. I wouldn’t say it’s underrated because most people I’ve seen rate it very highly, there just aren’t nearly enough people that know about it. The first few episodes imply a more innocent show so I think many overlooked it but it is simply getting you familiar with the world so you can understand what’s happening when the cracks in this society reveal themselves. I haven’t watched again recently, but I’ve long considered it the best anime story I’ve ever experienced from beginning to end. I cannot recommend it enough, especially to those interested in these kinds of concepts.

You miss out on quoting the final episode where Akane Tsunamori harmonizes these paradoxes in a conversation with Kogami - SPOILERS AHEAD OF THE END. I RECOMMEND YOU WATCH THE SHOW FIRST.
Akane-- "The law doesn't protect people, people protect the law. Humans have always fought against evil, and sought out a righteous way of living as a group. Those Feelings, the accumulation of society's feelings are the law. They aren't just provisions or arbitrary rules, they are the fragile and irreplaceable ideals we all carry in the deepest recesses of our hearts.
Compared to the power of anger and hatred. There's something that easily can be broken down:
People have prayed for a better world since the dawn of time, hoped for better future, sacrificed their own freedoms for its sake...
in order for those prayers to hold meaning, we have to protect the law, that promise of a better world, to the very end.
We can't just give up on it because it's flawed."
Kogami - "If there ever comes a time when people feels the way you do. The Sibyl System will disappear, there won't be any latent criminals, nor enforcers. Because there won't be any NEED for them...But until then..."

The only constant in my entire life has been my mental agony which in turn causes terrible physical pain and even though there are some days where all I want to do is just give up instead of continuing to fight a never ending battle with mental illness I none the less persevere. Furthermore I use that pain to fuel my undying drive to keep pushing forward no matter how intolerable life becomes and yet the greatest gift such adversity has bestowed upon me has been without a shadow of a doubt perspective. Not only perspective in my own life but perspective on humanity as a whole which in many ways translates into having a truly unvarnished and unbiased perspective of the problems facing the west in the modern times. I see that the root of all such problems come from people becoming so hopelessly detached from the ultimate reality of this world which is that of struggle and suffering and instead view their soft, insolated and privileged lives as merely the natural state of being when it is anything but and as such only continue to take modern society for granted by constantly being dissatisfied when they have more than anyone in the history of humanity. Even worse they become more and more self obsessed, vain and utterly delusional thinking that the rest of the world owes them something or should bend over backwards to accommodate them. However in short it can be summed up simply as people devolving into a state of permanent childhood where they wish to be taken care of and protected from all the dangers of the world even at the cost of their liberties and the liberties of others and if you have a problem with it then you're an enemy unworthy of either respect or empathy.

    Dear Max,
This anime is one of my absolute favorite works of art and my favorite anime. I think you did a wonderful video about it and WOULD like to hear more about the works referenced by Ko, Makashima and others. I also wanted to point out about the cymatic scans, a theory I have on why no one questions it and how it functions. First I think by this time the tech is already commonly understood so the people have no reason to talk about it. Second, my theory about how cymatic scans work is that the dominator is equipped with advanced sensor that collect biometric data such as heart rate, temp, and brain wave activity to give Sybil clear and easy to analyze information similar to that collected by polygraph lie detectors. Naturally this would include micro facial expression mapping use the F.A.C.S. system developed by Eckman and used by the CIA today. This would explain why it cannot judge psychopaths, because they would not show micro expressions or biometric changes do to their actions, since the necessary emotion stimulus to cause those changes wouldn't be present. I'm curious to know what you think about this theory and I hope you are able and willing to respond.
    Your faithful and satisfied viewer,
    Oesius
(P.S. please forgive me if my letter format is a bit sloppy. I don't often write letters.)

By my understanding, everyone in that universe has been implanted with biometric readers since birth, which is why everything they enjoy in their own lifestyle is tuned to their daily preferences (literally change the look of the room by full holographic projection in one scene, including clothing, if I recall correctly) to keep their emotions and efficacy (ie. work skill) in tip top shape and within acceptable parameters. The ultimate dystopian future.

I find it interesting that you would release this video at roughly the same time as DAVOS 2023 spoke on the risks of mind reading tech.
I would love to hear more about the philosophy you picked up on in the anime and how it relates to the themes as presented. I think it is something we all need right now.

If you like their take on political thrillers, check out 'Babylon' from the same producer and director of the Psycho Pass series.
It's only 1 season of 12 episodes so it won't take much of your time.

I'd love you to do more vids on psychopass and it's literary references.
I'd also like to point out on your yin yang comparison between makishima and Kogami, while ko does have a predominately black design with white in it, Makishima does not always have black in his design. I think they are trying to show that he is an imperfect pair to Kogami.

Please do a DEEPER Dive! And the other season/progression of the story and ultimlity where it ends. Also the movie talks about early adaption of the sybil system in another country. As that country struggles to use it and the citizians reaction to the stytem. Then just the further progress of the mc's. Such a huge fan of this anime. Need to go back and rewatch again. TY for this piece of art! Maybe give Trigun a watch if you haven't already, cheers!

Hey Max. Great video for a great anime. I'd love to see more videos delving into the various components of Psycho Pass.
While Psycho Pass does provide a fascinating vision of a nanny-state dystopian future, just like with Thanos' prescription of "wiping out half the population to save the other half," the path that the Japanese government took to ultimately form the Sybil System missed the mark on the root causes of their society's shortcomings. Ironically, the way Japan solved its food crisis (with hyper-oats) was a more forward-thinking solution than the Thanos snap. For other issues (such as the way that it dealt with unemployment), it didn't dig deep enough because employment itself (and the power structure that benefits most from this form of exploitation) is sacrosanct in the world of Psycho Pass.
I know that this video was not meant to go into that level of detail, but that's just one aspect that was either not considered or not implemented in either season of Psycho Pass or the movie. In any case, I look forward to more Psycho Pass analysis from you, should it come to be.

I'd like to say something about a comment you made early about Metal Gear Solid 2, and the intersection of AI and misinformation.
MGS2 came out at a time before social media, when things like search engines were seen as simple data parsers with their relative levels of quality being commonly measured by how quickly they let you find the particular content you were seeking. I would assert that modern misinformation is actually a product *of* an AI, rather than something an AI would try to save us from. Since the time MGS2 had come out, algorithmic curation had increased in both sophistication and ubiquity. In MGS2, the AI mentioned the problems of humans being sectioned off into their own little filter bubbles, where "nobody is wrong but nobody is challenged either." But that's not something that's produced organically by people sorting themselves into communities (at least not fully,) it's something created by modern AI sorting people into communities based on what its prior data said would produce the most engagement for a given "personality demographic". This is how those vulnerable to certain kinds of disinformation are pushed toward the kind of disinformation that would affect them most strongly. This is the algorithm making decisions about "not to control content but to create context" as MGS2 puts it.
I assert that AI is not and cannot be the *solution* to disinformation because AI is in fact the *cause* of disinformation.

Oddly I had the same thought that Psycho-Pass seemed eerily of our time when I was watching it about a year ago. What blows me away from the creative side of it rather than simply the philosophical is how they were able to weave together so many different sources of argument into a cohesive and compelling narrative, including making the more intimate and personal elements relevant to the larger ideas.
It was made over a decade ago too, which in a way makes it not exactly prophetic, but was certainly very aware of emerging issues in society. It's simply brilliant.
