  • It’s raining fossils 80 feet below Wilshire Boulevard as L.A. Metro continues its expansion of the Purple Line through Beverly Hills. Paleontologists have already found 2,000 ice age fossils in dirt dug by the new construction including a two-foot bison horn, a mammoth knuckle and a shin bone from an early camel ancestor.In this immersive VR 180 video, Metro paleontological monitor Bethany Ader takes you on a tour of a subway cavern 80 feet beneath the ground where the prehistoric bison horn was found. You’ll also visit with Dr. Ashley Ledger, a paleontologist at Cogstone Resource Management Lab in Riverside who is processing LA’s latest fossil discoveries.Ledger says the the Metro Purple Line expansion for a paleontologist is a “dream come true.”

    I have a family member that worked on the excavation for LACMA's underground parking garage. They had to pause their project when they unearthed the first of almost a dozen ice age fossils. Really cool stuff.

    Those bones did not fossilized because they are not millions of years old they’re probably a few thousand years old only

    So how does stuff like this end up so deep in the ground? Has there really been that much deposition? Has the elevation of the surrounding area changed that much?

      at my great grandfather's (still in the family for 143 years) farm the creek bed has changed about 9 feet in the last 50 years. soft soil can erode pretty quick.

    • @18dot7
      @18dot7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. All fossils are transitional. Today, there are roughly 7 billion transitional people on earth. And btw, man is still adapting to its environment: www.sci-news.com/medicine/fabella-07116.html

  • @marciturner4980

    This looks like a video game instead of actual footage. Strange in naming the specimen "Haden" as if it's a pet when it's really a part of a bone. Or if you are naming that actual animal that name as if it's your long lost pet. My direct point: Haden does not sound anything like the name of a bone itself. Sounds more like the name of a pet, or a person's name.

      These are paleontologists who are working alongside the subway builders in order to recover these fossils. The La Brea Tar Pits Museum where they do their research is literally a block away.

      @Elizabeth Bennet = The Blue Line (later renamed Purple in 2006) opened and began operations in 1990 followed by the Red Line in 1993, so it's been about 30 years now and these are the only 2 underground subway lines; all other lines operate at street surface and/or elevated levels = Google "Los Angeles Metro Rail"

    This being in VR adds nothing and maybe is worse than a normal video. VR is more suited to experiences like a roller coaster not lecture style videos where we are just looking at one person.
