Inside The World's Skinniest Supertall Skyscraper | 3D VR180

    Much has been made of New York’s 57th Street. It’s the most luxurious street in the world; more houses were bought for north of $25 million in the last five years on Billionaire’s Row than on any other road globally. It’s also rife with super-tall skyscrapers: Central Park Tower, 432 Park Avenue, and 111 West 57th Street are each taller than 1,300 feet, or about a quarter of a mile high.
    Critics have bemoaned the mega-sized shadows these towers cast on Central Park, and others have noted that many owners in the buildings’ multi-million dollar residences may pay little-to-no property tax. Still others have highlighted the fact that the buildings continue to top out even as sales have slumped.
    Few, though, have mentioned the exhilaration (and occasional terror) of actually being in an apartment at helicopter-height-these buildings are so tall that residents have reported occasionally being above the clouds.
    So as the SHoP Architects-designed 111 West 57th Street nears completion, we strapped on a hard hat, steeled our nerves, and took a 91-story ride on an exterior hoist to film some see-it-to-believe it footage from 1,420 feet in the air with state-of-the-art virtual reality cameras loaned from Google. Watch the embedded video to learn more about the building’s history and gravity-defying engineering-its base is only 60 feet wide-and what life’s like at the very literal top of Manhattan real estate.

      It's pretty obvious by the construction elevator and material right outside the window that it's not fully complete yet. It's still a construction site, of course the windows aren't going to be clean yet. The building isn't planned to be done until the end of 2020.

      Central park is huge and the sun is constantly moving, so even on a bright day, these towers wouldn't block any area for more than maybe a half hour at a time. And clouds create shadows all the time. So how is that really a big deal?

      Just pretend the elevator is a car. By the 1.5 minutes you are already at the bottom and there is so much in the area that you don't even need a car. I'd rather that than drive 30 minutes to place A, 15 minutes to place B, 1 hour rush hour to place C

      @PrimiusLovin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sasailic3006 Perhaps for the people that already live there it's something familiar that they are accustomed to, but I never needed an elevator to enter all the houses I've lived in so far... but I do remember having had to enter my house 4-5 times per day and really can't picture myself doing that in a building like this one!

    Back in the 1930’s, NYC legislated a building setback ordinance because the then new Equitable Insurance Building at 120 Broadway in the Financial District cast unacceptable shadows over the quadrangle of streets surrounding the building ;
    Nassau Street, Pine Street, Cedar Street, and across Lower Broadway, onto the historic Trinity Church yard and westward beyond. I am now ninety years of age, but vividly recall that architecturally-imposed “ Dark Canyon” robbing that historic sight of sunlight; when I was a 16 year old “Office Boy” in 1946-1947. The then new, yet still in effect, City Building Ordinance which mandates building set backs has become the national “ gold standard “ of building codes nationwide.
    The point is here that NYC legislators should promulgate code that controls and imposes restrictions on structures that artificially interfere with nature’s sunlight over publicly owned park space... I.e. Central Park.
    New Yorkers, please start a movement, pressuring your city councilmen and Board of Supervisors to take action in that direction. Thank you. from a native born New York retiree now residing in the Midwest.
