Hello I was wondering why you have to dry them before you plant them because I put one in a pot should I take it out or leave it in.? Please help my plant!
If you plant a fresh cutting in soil, bacteria can enter the cactus through the cut and start a rot. Sometimes you can plant a fresh cutting as long as your soil is very dry. But as a precaution, it is always best to let a cactus cutting form a hard callous before planting it. 🙂
What is the cactus on the bottom right corner in the beginning (0:23) of your video? My cactus is just like that one but I haven't been able to find a name for it. Would you propagate it the same way? Would you cut the pups or pull them off? Would I put cinnamon on the open parts too? And then let it dry out for a few days, and then place it in soil? Does the soil need to stay moist for it to grow roots? Please let me know what I would need to do or give me any advice to propagate that kind of cactus. Thank you! I appreciate you!
Hi Vanessa. Thank you for watching my video. That is an echinocereus grandiflora hybrid. There are many hybrids of this I am not sure which one I have. I separate the offsets to propagate it. But to do this, you would have to take the whole cactus out of the pot to make a clean separation or cut. Yes, apply cinnamon and dry them out too (including the mother plant) before putting them back in soil. I water the cuttings like I would a regular cactus. I hope this helps. 🙂🌵☕️
I haven’t seen them in a hanging basket. I’m not sure if that would look good. But I have seen many of this tied to a stake to keep them upright. Or some are placed inside a circular “cage” to make them stand. 😀
I use to have those white labels on my plants but since last year, I stopped using them as I always lose them or they easily break. Now, I just write the names on the pot itself.
I suspend my Opuntia ficus (I think) pads over water just touching the water, like with Hyacyinth. I get loads of roots very quickly about 2 weeks . Then put into pots.
Hi! I’m just wondering, should I put cinnamon on the part that’s gonna planted in the soil three days later as well? Or only on the tops of the cactus?
Yes, adding cinnamon to the bottom and on the soil will help encourage rooting as well. It is said to deter ants, too. Cinnamon is harmless but very beneficial. I use them all over my plant.
I've not had much good experiences applying cinnamon to my cuttings. Now, I do apply it to where I made the cut from the mother cactus. But, I used cinnamon on several fairy castle cactus cuttings, and they severely dried up. To the point that the cuttings were no longer viable. And I barely dusted the cuts. I just allow them to callous over naturally, nothing applied to cuts whatsoever. Do you know what could have caused my fairy castle cuttings to react to cinnamon that way? They were 100% healthy, not dehydrated at all beforehand.
Im sorry that happened to your cactus. I’m not exactly sure. It could be a lot of factors like the cuts getting infected from the knife or scissors that you used. Or maybe the cactus was left out to callous too long. Fairy castle are more tropical. They like humidity and can take more water. I have no luck growing Fairy Castle cactus. They always shrivel up and die during our hot and dry summer.
Thank you for your kind words. ☺️ I have not tried planting any furry cactus in the ground. I am not sure if the ones I have can survive the desert sun in summer and freezing temperatures during winter. It would be interesting to experiment on that. 👍🏼
My opuntia snow died because of scales... i would really want another one but unless i stop scales from growing in my cacti collection, i can only admire from afar
Succulent Hauz They are difficult to get rid of but try a mix of 50/50 water and rubbing alcohol and a few drops of dish washing soap in a hand held spray bottle. Spray the affected are well and use a soft brush or sponge to gently rub down the area. This should remove the existing scale.

Why do you root them in a different pot and then add them to the one you want them to stay in? Can they just root in the same pot as the ones you cut them off of?
Yes, you are correct. I could have rooted them in the same pot. But I did them separate for the sake of doing this video so I can show everyone when they formed roots. I did not want to disturb the mother plants too much. 😉 Thank you for watching! 🙂
Hello Anna I'm a new subscriber found you from Emily's succulent Greenhouse. Such a great video on how to propagate Cactus. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am a new succulent and Cactus collector and a new TH-camr as well hope you'll visit my channel we can all learn from one another
Hi Judy. Thank you for your kind words. For some reason, I only see this comment on my Y Studio but not on my actual video. You have a good collection of plants, too. 👍🏼🙂 I love watching plant videos. Cheers from the desert of Nevada! 🌵☕️
Wow they rooted well in 5 weeks, great video, thanks for sharing :)
CrazyCactusCollector, thank you so much. I appreciate your support! 🙂
OMG ... I am a pretty new cactus mom in desperate need of help, and this video just gave me sooo many answers. Thank you! 👍💞

This plant has now grown very tall again. 🙂
I did what you said and now I have from 4 to 8. Very easy to do. Thanks
I’m happy to hear that. This opuntia is easy to grow as long as you keep them on the dry side. Thank you so much for your feedback. ☺️🌵☕️
Thank you so much! My snow cactus was droopy and so sad. I think this will help!
I love watching your videos from Prescott Arizona.

Loved your information. I use a small paintbrush to stipple the cinnamon into the cutting. 🏜
This was very helpful. Looking forward to the 5 weeks for roots.
Nice roots. They look wonderful all together.
Thank you, Olga! Cheers. ☕️🌵
Whoo! Followed this tutorial about 2 months ago and it worked beautifully! Love your channel ❤️
Aww. I’m glad it worked out for you. 😊 CHEERS!

strong roots...strong coffee makes for good growing!
Yes! Strong coffee gives the grower more strength. 😉😁 Thank you for watching and leaving a kind comment. Cheers! ☕️☕️
I am planning to get a cutting from my son and root one for me. Wish me luck and thanks for the instructions.
Kim's Gardens, that would be nice! Good luck and I hope your cuttings will root fast. Cheers! ☕️🌵

Thanks for the cinnamon tip❤
No problem 😊 Glad it helps

I have a pot of this long cacti and they are starting to bend. I don't want to cut them short. Do you have any suggestion? Hanging basket?
I haven’t seen them in a hanging basket. I’m not sure if that would look good. But I have seen many of this tied to a stake to keep them upright. Or some are placed inside a circular “cage” to make them stand. 😀
@@CactusCaffeineok. Thanks
question: Will rooting powder take the same time to grow roots?
I don’t have that in my collection. They’re so furry like my cats 😂 I miss kapeng barako too! 🤣 thank you for sharing an informative video. 👍🥰
Edithcolia Grandis, that’s funny comparing them to your furry cats. 😁 Ooh, barako coffee is my favorite!! Why do you miss it, where do you live?
Cactus Caffeine i have 2 white Ragdoll (rascal 😂) cats. I am based overseas too so i miss Pinoy stuff. 🥰
I see. I found Barako once here but it was ridiculously expensive. Hahaha.
Yellow sulphur powder is the best agent to callous cactus. Cinnamon can cause mould issues occasionally during the callousing process.
Thanks for this video. Do you know if the first pads from which you took the cuttings grow ones? Thanks!
I was wondering the same. Are they going to brunch out on top of old pad or just 1 will keep growing?
Great video 😊!! I see some of your cactus labeled. What do you use or do you buy them labeled already?
I use to have those white labels on my plants but since last year, I stopped using them as I always lose them or they easily break. Now, I just write the names on the pot itself.
Awesome video
Thank you so much Bree. Your comment put a smile on me. 😊🌵☕️ Have an awesome day!
Can you double cut snow fuzzy, like cut 2 or 3 from the tall one, I call it middle cuts.
Yes you can! The growth may take longer but it definitely can work.
I suspend my Opuntia ficus (I think) pads over water just touching the water, like with Hyacyinth. I get loads of roots very quickly about 2 weeks . Then put into pots.
That’s great trick!
Hi, love the video! do you also put cinnamon on the pads that were cut off ?
Yes, I did on all open cuts. 🙂
My snow cactus is so tall, it’s starting to lean over. It appears to be healthy. Is this just because it’s top heavy?
Do you need any special gloves to use in re-potting?
I have a question: Does the Opuntia Snow fruit like the common opuntia? And good video.
Don't forget to wash your spoon before you stir dinner.
🤣 🥄 🌵
Can I graft a moon cactus pup onto the cut top of a optunia snow?
I haven’t tried it but I’ve seen other growers use opuntia as a root stock. 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine I will try it today! Thanks!
What is the cactus to the right on the ground ? That would be while watching the video, on the right
mary garrett, hi. That is a trichocereus grandiflora cactus. 🙂

Are you from the US? I usually see these available either at Home Depot or Lowe’s every now and then. 🙂
I live in Texas I bought one from Lowe’s

Mine has very short roots , Is that normal ?!
Opuntia is not easily found at my local garden stores
I wish i could find it around 😭
I hope so cause they are beautiful with their hairy spines. Good luck! 🙂☕️☕️
I got mine from Lowe’s two months ago I think I paid 499 for it
I did follow the same steps but my new babies died after the first time I watered them :(
Aww. Sorry that happened to you. Sometimes things happen for unknown reasons. Hopefully you’ll be successful next time you try it again.
i cant for the life of me propagate my cactus babies. Im afraid to rip the babies off now. -.-
Just twist the top pad and it will come off. You don't have to do surgical procedures.
