The Yamaha TW200 is a 196 cc single cylinder dual-sport motorcycle manufactured and marketed by Yamaha since 1987. TW is short for Trail Way. In 2001 an update was made that removed the kick start and replaced the front drum brake with a disc brake. Due to its large tires, it has been compared to the 2-wheel-drive Rokon and has been called a "two-wheeled quad".
Shinji Kazama rode a TW200 to the North Pole in 1987.[5]
In a review of the 2020 model, Ultimate Motorcycling said, "If you're patient and persistent, the TW can take you almost anywhere.
    What is a Yamaha TW200?
The Yamaha TW200 is a dual-sport motorcycle from Yamaha. Launched in 1987, the "Trail Way" 200 is a basic, 196 cc no-frills motorcycle with a carburetor and rear drum brake.

Nice video. I have 2 x TW200, amazing billy goats, will climb anything, great fun & not one problem ever! Suggested mods: Cyclerack rear rack, IMS or Tusk footpegs, Richochet bash/skid plate, Shinko 241 front tire, Tusk bar risers, Tusk handguards, Jimbo windscreen, JNS engineering or other LED headlight & seat concepts foam/seat if you have the $$. Some put a 47 tooth sprocket for easier (lower) rpm cruising at the top end. Stock is 50 tooth. Safe riding & thanks for the video. Ronny

Yes 47 tooth I had one put on my TDUB and I must say I cruise comfortably at 60-65 mph all day, lower rpm and no handle bar vibration, love the bike.

I love the little bike but I know it's because ive owned powerful bike and knows what that's about.
I got it out of my system and now O can enjoy a 17hp bike cruising around enjoying the trails..
    It's fn awesome.
Shinko 241 for the front works great. Like a grappling hook .

Of all the motorcycles I've owned, the only one I've ever regretted selling is my TW200. Now it's next to impossible to find. Best mod I did for town riding was change the rear sprocket to a 42 tooth. That let me ride at 60-65mph on highways (NOT interstate) on the way to the mountain trails, and still have plenty of grunt to climb the hills when I finally got there.
There are so many other bikes out there that offer speed, or torque, or can do rad jumps, etc. The TW isn't it. What the TW200 excels at is forcing you to slow down and enjoy the scenery along the ride. It inspires confidence even on the most challenging trails, and a feeling of accomplishment when overcoming obstacles. It's just so much fun! One day I'll have one again.

I live in the mountains in southern Spain. This is one bike I've been contemplating. Lots of tracks and mule paths here and mates who live in hard to reach places.
A few people have mentioned this bike, and there are a couple about.
Looks like it might do the job. Especially as speed is not high priority and there are lots of add ons.

I understand the appeal and some of those customs at the end are VERY cool. What I don't understand are people who refer to this bike as a "mountain goat" (or whatever) and that it will get you to places other bikes can't go etc. Thank you for correctly stating that you would have a hard time keeping up with "real" dual sports. A couple years ago I owned a KTM500EXC and my buddy wanted to get a TW to ride along. He had watched too many videos of reviewers claiming this bike was "super duper amazing" and it was by the skin of my teeth that I was able to get him to understand the reality of things. For what it is, it's great and I like it a lot but there's a reason dirt bikes/dual-sports all follow the same recipe of narrower wheels, longer suspension travel and higher ground clearances. Nice video, thumbs up!

It’s definitely not a dirtbike. The handling is awful. I have a tx300 husky and of course I’ll always be faster on it. I keep a tw200 on the back of my van as an exploration vehicle. I’ve taken the tdub places I wouldn’t take the other bikes because I can dab a foot on off camber cliff sides that you could lose a bike on. I’ve geared mine down to a top speed of 40mph, and revalved the suspension and I can climb anything and go everywhere. I will say the biggest weakness is the frame and I’ve had to do welding over the years. I’ll still never sell the bike

When it was my first motorcycle and I never rode a dual sport, I thought it was ok. But once I started riding on a trail much, I realized it wasn't right for me. And once I changed to a WR250R, I saw real quick that the TW200 is really not suited for off-road riding aside from really light/easy stuff or riding in sand.

I did the COBDR including the Alpine Loop with my buddy who was on the TW200. It can go places & the bike is a hoot. It is not a KTM though so its all what you want out of your ride. I swear I need a TW200 just for foolin around locally on tiny roads here and keep the KLR for longer, more serious rides.

Wow, as a 5'4" owner of a TW200 I would imagine that you would fit and be happier with a taller bike. Although I consider it the best Prepper bike regardless of height, almost. I would recommend my XT225 or the KLR250 as beginner bikes for you. Or, at your height, go ahead and get a beginner keeper 350-400 like the DR350 or DRZ400. Depending on your riding plans you could also just jump right onto the KLR650, which I consider a better choice for your size than my pick the DR650 at my size. Check out excellent YT motorcycle channel Ogre, who is 6'7".

    Nice video. 👍
First of all, that red and white "TW200 Trailway" shown ridden to the North Pole is not a TW200 at all.
Take a closer look at it.
It is a modified Yamaha TY250 trials bike (similar to the 1985-1986 TY350 sold in the USA), and I remember when Yamaha was using this video footage and pics to promote the then-new 1987 TW200T.
I was amazed they actually tried to pawn it off as a TW200 because a TY250 has, for one big difference, a 2-stroke engine.
I remember watching some of the promotional video of this North Pole trip and the sound of the engine is clearly that of a 2-stroke.
It's a completely different model of motorcycle.
    Incredible.
I'm familiar with the TW200 and have owned three of them:
    The debut year 1987 TW200T, a 2000 TW200M, and 2018 TW200J1.
    My opinion:
If you want to ride fast, this is not your bike for either street or off-road.
The suspension is low-tech and short in wheel travel and not up to going fast over rough ground, the ergonomics encourage you to sit down and stay seated, and power and torque is fine for slower riding but not enough to be called fast.
Also, on the street the stock gearing is pretty low and the tranny is only 5 speeds, not 6.
My cruising speed on the street was 40mph, tops.
Sure, it will go faster, but 40mph was the best compromise.
That's not very fast for many roads even in the sticks where I live.
Off-road, it you want to go at a slower pace and stay seated nearly all the time, the TW makes a great choice.
While the short suspension means no high speeds over rough ground and lowish ground clearance, it makes the TW200 great at slow trail riding, even if you found yourself out in the woods with no trail at all in exploration mode.
The power is easy to use and control and the short suspension allows you to easily touch the ground so dabbing the ground or putting feet down while making a full stop frequently is easy.
If I had to imagine a scenario where the TW200 performs best it would be putting through easier trails when speed is not needed or exploring off the beaten path at a snail's pace.
For slower riding like that the bike is great.

I think of the TW200 with its wide tires and low gearing as a mechanical mountain goat. In the early 1980's I rode an earlier design Yamaha farm bike, the two-stroke AG175. Like you said, it wouldn't get you anywhere quickly, but it WOULD get you there eventually. Unfortunately, in North Africa where I worked at the time, the two-strokes would occasionally "soft seize" when being run hard (road miles) on hot days. I would have much preferred the TW200.

    • @DaveZee01

And if this particular Motorcycle is a really good fit for your particular needs or preferences, there’s really just not many affordable options out there. One of these days, someone is going to put a little regenerative brushless hub motor on the front for intermittent two-wheel-drive on demand, and it really will be an unstoppable go-anywhere bike capable of dragging itself PLUS your own dismounted carcass out of whatever abomination you have managed to ride it into, so long as you can at least hang onto the handlebars. (I have actually seen a dual chain-drive Rokon do exactly this from a mud and water-filled ditch.) That could come in handy…

  • @leanit5756
    @leanit5756 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's a motorcycle, motorcycles are fun, therefore, it is fun. However, you must be content to go slow, VERY SLOW. The suspension sucks, so you can't go fast sitting down, and the ergonomics are absolutely horrible for standing up, so that doesn't work either. And of course the engine has minimal power, plus it is jettedso lean that I consider it unusable without carb resetting and adjustments.
I got a couple to teach the wife to ride, and it worked well enough for this. But once past that, we sold both and I got her a XT250 which is really what we should have got to begin with. It is 3 times the bike, and just as suitable for learning.

re: tires. AFAIK only the front is the “deathwing” the rear most of us TW owners like. It’s good on the street and plenty of traction off road in all but the most extreme conditions. I personally have never found fault with it unless the mud gets deep. the front however is garbage and should be placed in the garbage as step 1 when the bike is new.
As of today there are some other options besides the ATV tire if you ware willing to spend the money. Pro Cycle sells wheels for it in a 17” size which opens up lots of ADV style rubber for the rear.
