Classic Game Room reviews DODONPACHI for Sega Saturn from Cave and Atlus. This vertical scrolling SHMUPS style space ship shooter was released in 1997 as the sequel to Donpachi (Also available for the Sega Saturn). Referred to as a maniac shooter or bullet hell style shooter, DoDonPachi gives players the choice of three space ships and two shot styles each to combat thousands of enemies and hulking end bosses that fill the screen with shot patterns. Fans of Shmup style shooters regard DoDonPachi as one of the better spaceship shooters on the Sega Saturn, a solid game system which handles DoDonPachi with ease. This CGR video review of DoDonPachi has gameplay from DoDonPachi, the sequel to DonPachi recorded from Sega Saturn showing in game footage game play in HD action. - บันเทิง
I believe this game also uses the 3D controller's analog control, which Souky also uses. Once you try out analog control in an arcade shoot-em-up, you'll never want to go back to digital. It's glorious. This game is just sensational, like riding a roller coaster after downing a case of Red Bulls. It's so over the top as to almost become a parody of itself. It's far too hard for its own good. It's nearly always overwhelming. If I can last ten seconds after the first stage, it's a minor miracle. What a glorious rush.
It's absolutely shocking how gamers turned their backs on arcade videogames in the 5th Generation. During the 16-bit era, a game like Dodonpachi would practically be worshipped as a deity. But after the Playstation dropped? Forget it, kid. These games couldn't get arrested.
I've tried playing dodonpachi with the 3d controller but it doesnt work with the thumbpad. Only the D pad. The thumbpad works with every other game that I've tried so do you have any idea why dodonpachi doesn't work?
“I’m going to tear through enemy waves, like ME, through a Vectrex auction.”
Mark, you’re a renaissance man.
I first watched this review many years ago before I knew anything about Dodonpachi or Cave. Now that I've played pretty much all the Cave shooters, and currently enjoying Resurrection on my switch, I got to say I did not appreciate this review or just how amazing of a game Dodonpachi really is. So many good memories watching this channel!
He's playing the "saturn edition", which is a remixed version of the original arcade game. The saturn game also has the arcade version included. There's no "difficulty toggle", but you can give yourself more ships, and make the extends easier to get.
Oh yes. I love DoDonPachi. I usually use the blue fighter and tap fire until I see a large enemy. Mixing up my shots works better for me, and the bomb when tapping fire is good for getting out of tight situations.
Level two in this review is actually Level 1 of the mame version. I'm not sure what all the differences between the two versions are, but there's no difficulty setting in the mame one (for obvious reasons: sucking up your quarters). This review is definitely on an easier setting.
I love those all-purpose explosion sound libraries that were used in every game back then.
Im so glad cave started making games again on the iPhone. Dodonpachi on my phone....who would have ever dreamed it. Plus their new completely original iPhone game is equally as awesome.
The "enemy scumbags" on that ship are actually your comrades that you're being tricked into fighting against. ^_^ It's the "plot twist" when the first loop is over.
Admittedly, it's a very clever one considering what happened in the first game.
I play Dodonpachi was extreme shoot em ups ever in Arcade and Saturn
I am SO getting this game. I 've been holding this game off for a couple years now, but after seeing a longplay video of this today, this is all me. Not that expensive either...
thank god, mark is back to shooters
Cool shot of laser annihilation. Combined with the panic metal soundtrack.
Obviously I liked it. Good work.
WOW! The music and visuals in this game look amazing! It reminds me of a more intense version of MUSHA!
Miss you, Mark!
is there anyone that doesn't love mark's reviews?
Game Over....yeah?
A masterpiece!
Blown away by this game! DODONPACHI, where have you been my whole life?!😱🥲 The music alone is killer. A must play for Saturn bullet-hell fans.👍👍
Don't know if anyone already mentioned this but both of the 'Pachis' are available for download in the Japan PSN store. They are each 600 yen and can be played on both PS3 and PSP.
picked up dodonpachi just a few days ago awsome game great fun as you said mark a must for your saturn collection.
Dondonpachi is one of my favorite SHMUPS ever, becouse it's fast over the top and colorfull :D
Flying shooters are like puzzles to me... It doesnt matter how many enemies you kill but how many bullets you avoid... its all pattern based too!
My heart was racing at that gameplay!
Its like Mark is part of the family now......Thanx Mark :)
the laser reminded me of your love for flamethrowers
Now that looks pretty bad ass! I'll never play it but thanks for showing it.
@DoctorRheet There is a difficulty setting. Start the game, wait for the warning screen to disappear, then hold F2.
Thanks for posting I love shooter games
I love games like this. I do not own a Sega Saturn though. Looks like I need to get one.
"Vertical scrolling SHMUPS style space ship shooter."
Mark is the king of superfluous genre descriptions.
A lot of saturn shooters sell for $100-200 now, so $60 is actually not too bad for a good shooter. I agree though, it's pretty expensive for an old game.
and kickass music
Great job thank you 👍
very good graphic game and good length of play
I prefer the green helicopter ship. It let's me blast at enemies that are coming from the sides without having to move much. Playing Touhou has made me even better at this game, but I still die in the last levels.
Bad ass game with bad ass music
this game is more expensive than a saturn :P
Besides, if Mark could get his hands on a USB adapter for his Saturn controller, he'd be in fucking heaven.
MAN mark you're great at bullet hell shooters i love bullet hell myself but i usually die on the first levels of games such as ikaruga for dreamcast
the only bullet hell shmup im good at is twinkle star sprites for dreamcast
@TheSquishyTanker .....That would be fun to watch....
Finally some vektrex references and does the music in this game remind anyone else of top gun
Playing this on the PSP is awesome.
time you reviewed dodonpachi as a shmup fan! ddp is the best shmuo of all time! OF ALL TIME!
Such a great game! I was able to get my copy for only 60 bucks
Mark you are a beast at SHUMPS
if you determine a shmups greatness in terms of fun, dodonpachi is one of the 10 best period.
I remember playing this on the arcade version
Awesome
Yeah! This is my game! Arguably the best shooting game of all time. Get it if you've got a Saturn!
@MrSmiley381 I never said there was anything wrong with the controller or the disc art, I just thought he'd rather play the original version for authenticity. I like the Saturn controller so much that I was going to get controller converters so I could use the Saturn pad on my Dreamcast, since the Dreamcast controller is asstits.
@badtrane It did, DDP for bullet hells is similar to Street Fighter 2 in that it was the game that refined proto bullet hells into what we see nowadays.
@Barla90 Imo I find the blue ship is usefull for killing popcorn in stages 4 and 5
Im not a big fan of space shooters, but this is awesome!
@TrevHead10 You're absolutely right! Actually I prefer the red ship, the blue one is much weaker but it reaches more enemies. It's alright for the first level, but then you may get in trouble.
imagine mark reviewing dodonpachi Resurrection his mind will be blown
Cave always make good danmaku shooters.
Damnit, ever since I started watching CGR my bank account has seriously suffered.
super awesome laser gun
seriously undertow reviews some awesome obscure games but they blow it
3:00 I wanna see Mark go through a Vectrex auction now.
@gokujr93 It might be a bad port, but it's still a good game. And the Saturn controller is awesome. And look at that disc art!
JUST A COUPLE MOAR SHOTS!!
@Sasupoika2
The difficulty is constructed from many parts. You cannot just look at the game and say if it is hard or not. Image Fight doesn't look hard at all, but it ranks as one of the most difficult shoot'em'ups of all time.
More bullets =/= more difficult. It depends on how bullets are -used-.
So far there are 1 or 2 recorded western clears of Dodonpachi. And by looking quickly around, I can see dozens of lunatic EoSD-clears.
@crosstrigger1 They both made and published Catherine, though Dodonpachi was made by Cave but published by Atlas. Whoa!~
Hey which game do u prefer more or recommend more im wanna buy a pachi but im not sure if i should buy the first or second one
Great game.
@Barla90 Saturn version is more or less identical except it has "level 0" before main game begins.
We're getting a PAL release of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu / Ressurrection for 360 (in Europe, in other words). Rejoice!
Cave make great games in that genre. I have deathsmiles on xbox 360, and espalaguda on iphone.
The second level in this version is the same as the first level in the arcade version. I've never played this version but it seems very similar to the arcade one.
i LOVE cave games
yay sega saturn games :)
I get nervous just watching these type of games. Twitch-gaming deluxe!
*goes to make some coffee while contemplating his next move in HoMM III*
...or maybe I should stop drinking so much coffee.
Every shmup fan needs to atleast least have played this game on MAME, its like been into platformers and never playing a mario game. Its the grandaddy of the bullethell genre and is very noob friendly if played with the blue ship.
I cant wait to play Dodonpachi Resurrection when it comes to PAL 360 later this year
At least Mark made it past the high score part after he died.
@crosstrigger1 Atlus/Cave primarily made shmups back in those days.
@Corad4 If you play the Saturn in TATE mode it looks Arcade Perfect from what I've seen.
The game was developed by Cave, but published by Atlus. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it has nothing to do with Catherine X).
I had the chance to play this on an imported (from Japan) arcade machine a few months ago, set to free play. I can tell you that as good as this version is (it is great) the arcade version is just mindblowingly good. I think I hogged the machine for over 2hours.
Another one of those Japanese releases that unfortunately never made it here in the states that would've added longevity to the Saturn's life here...sad. I did manage to get this running arcade perfect on MAME on my old XBOX, thank goodness for emus
@XNoel2 YESSSSSS
@TestForEcho Last I heard, it's only getting a translation in Europe. I envy them.
@gokujr93 collectors LOVE to get the real thing dude XD
DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou is the best one.
This looks vaguely similer to Star Soldier:Vanishing Earth on the N64
is this same as the arcade? it looks diferent from arcade ans psx i think
@SilimsLetsPlays It's DDP, It *is* bullet hell.
Does Mark know that if he stops firing for a second, that the goodies will flock over to him?
What are some great shootem ups like this for PS3?
@gokujr93 ill take a saturn control pad over an arcade stick any day of the week for shooters
@XxXxmohxXxX If I remember correctly the PS1 port doesn't have TATE mode.
@MightyTallestZim82 Your talking about Resurrection Right?
Bought this new for like $39.99 when it first came out. Anyone remember Buyrite Videogames?
yea a shooter!!!
STUFF!
@DamiPL
Mind you, I have played both Dodonpachi and many Touhou-games. When SA came out, I 1cc'd it on normal with one attempt. Hard on few attempts later.
So far I have poured over 50 hours on Dodonpachi, and I still haven't reached the final stage or the true last boss. I have looped the game tho, with quite shitty score ( 72 millions ).
@twitchyphilosopher Good news, the european version is region free!!!!! :D
i'm sure this game inspired Jamestown (an indie game on steam)
swag
Mark dhould review Killer Instinct!! Thumbs up so he can see!
