Thank you for the reminder not to blame our bodies and to not believe every image on social media. You have such a good heart, Alyssa, and I really appreciate your content ♥️
Whew. This "it's not your body" message was well-timed ❤️. As a 60-something, I've been going thru some pretty uncomfortable body changes and nothing seems to be working wardrobe-wise right now. Thank you for these invaluable reminders!
I can relate! This ol' body has done a lot, and while I do my best to keep it fit and healthy GRAVITY is winning. LOL, at least that same gravity keeps me grounded in reality.
It’s great to hear you say that not every outfit has to be super-flattering, I agree. The majority of the time I like to define my waist, but not on a 100F day. I have a linen dress that’s designed without a fitted waist, for maximum coolness, and that’s exactly how I wear it. Yes, I would look more shapely with a belt, but that’s not the be-all and end-all of a wardrobe. Comfort gets top priority for my wardrobe, if I get overheated, itchy or something feels too tight, I know I won’t wear it however cute it looks.
The notion that anything that is good is, at the same time, "effortless" is absurd. Looking good takes effort and patience. One can look "unfussy," but that takes effort. Thanks for the reminder. Xoxo 💕
I love it. My family give me items that are stained and need repairs rather than throwing them out. They don’t seem to iron anything, and tumble dry anything that has creases.
Thanks for the reminder that if the clothing isn’t the most flattering it doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I often look better in clothes that skim my body. I have no hips so even though I’m a size 16 , I can look lean-ish in a body con dress. But I am not comfortable in that. My words are Flowy, Layered, Unexpected. So I will always layer on a moto or a cropped sweater or an oversized sweater to feel like “me.”
Greetings from another “hipless” woman. It’s not the easiest body type to dress, is it? Pants always have huge empty flaps sticking out the sides at my hips, so I wear lots of skirts and dresses instead. I also look good in fitted, dresses and more fitted styles in general, no oversize items for me. I’m going to try one of the peplum tops or jackets that are coming on trend and see if that makes me look a bit more shapely around my hips. My legs and hips are like sticks at any weight🙂
@@kimberlyperrotis8962 yes skirts and dresses for me too. Peplum is a great idea. I can’t go there because I also have a long torso so they don’t hit me right. We all got our own stuff don’t we?
Hipless, 6 ft tall, size 16, and 6i yrs old. But even at my skinny size 10 ( back in the day) I had the same fit issues. Finally have learned to stick with the shapes/styles that work for me. A wrap dress is always a winner!
I agree! Never have I been able to just throw something on and walk out the door. Every outfit takes some effort to achieve a desired look. Sometimes, taking the time to “play” with a piece and try it on in unconventional ways, will often reveal a piece that allows you more versatility which is priceless, particularly when putting together a travel wardrobe. I am 70 years old and a mere 4’8” tall. I, often, convert skirts into dresses, kimonos into dresses and scarves, and I flip cardigans for a cropped look. I also reverse tops and some dresses to create a completely different neckline. Scarves also serve as tops, belts, skirts, and shrugs. Yesterday, I thrifted a cute below the knee black and white floral print skirt into the cutest mini sundress! Throw on a straw hat and bag and some fun jewelry pieces along with a pair of white sandals and I’ve got myself a cool outfit for a day of shopping. By exchanging the straw bag for a clutch, pulling my hair back into an elegant bun, and changing out the shoes for a pair of low heels….now I have the absolute perfect outfit for dinner at a fine restaurant or any special event that would require a step up from casual wear. That little gem will most definitely be included in my suitcase for my next vacation or cruise! I pack just a small carry on bag for my trips as I only need a very few items to sustain me for a week or so.
I always prepare my food in advance for work so I don’t eat out, equally, I always prepare my outfits in advance. Consequently, everyone at work fawns over my lunch and my look. Preparation works for me, it is a time saver rather than a time waster.
I have learned so much since following you. I totally edited my closet (8 goodwill bags later), expanded my commitment to sustainability by moving away from fast fashion, being more thoughtful about what I wear and more importantly how I wear it. I have always been a positive and confident person but I have even more confidence and a spring in my step when I go out and I receive even more compliments than ever on my looks. I have also spread your word and inspired others to embark on this journey…ironically my daughters have embraced this for years. Anyway, a long rambling note to say…thanks!
Yes! This is the foundation of slow fashion, isn’t it?! If what we have already invested in isn’t working, we are continually dissatisfied. I’ve been there. And now, I’m 52, my body’s changing, as well as I’m struggling with some long haul Covid and digestive issues. Some days, I hardly feel like myself. Knowing that I can play with, adapt, tweak what I already have, as well as embrace my body and find my own unique and authentic style has been a life saver and a game changer. So grateful for your words and content. 🙏🏼💕
I like to watch Fashion Videos like yours while I iron/steam! Many of my friends won’t purchase any garments that have to be ironed or steamed which limits them to lots of synthetic fabrics. Thanks for the inspiration.
Excellent video! I practised all these ways (learned over the years) and some were really game changing like having your clothes tailored: I buy lots of second hand clothing and would think: I will not spend $20/$25 on alterations for something I paid the same amount! Big mistake! as I would end up not wearing the garment and wasting my initial expense. When I decided having the good quality clothes I would buy 2nd hand tailored to fit me, I would wear these clothes often, love them and did not buy another piece to replace the ones I was not wearing!!! Second point: you are right that you will find your own unique style by tailoring your clothes to fit you the way you like them to fit. I have all the shirts I wear as overshirts cropped above the largest part of my hips: I prefer that look on me and it became one of my signatures look.Third point: ironing/steaming: sorry, there is no way you will look chic/stylish if your clothes are wrinkled....
I love your embrace of “slow fashion” and the rewards of investing in beautifully made, high-quality clothing. Well-designed slow-fashion clothing made of beautiful fabrics tends to have superior silhouettes, drape better, and, ultimately, be more flattering.
Loved it! Suggestion (request?) for future topic. Agonizing over the whole color analysis thing. Cool Winter? Soft Summer? Are all my clothes the wrong color???
I've been having this exact issue with my clothes where things just aren't "working" and your tips are super helpful and a great reminder that clothes usually have to be altered in at least some small way to look amazing on you because they don't just magically conform to your exact body size and shape and fit preferences the second you put them on. Love your content!!!
Wonderful tips! I often find just pushing up my sleeves instantly gives me a look I’m more comfortable with and it’s more flattering for my proportions. Also, just adding a scarf to a simple outfit is often all I need to lift it from nice to smart! A full length mirror is your best friend to see what’s needed to finish a look! Thanks for another great video!
Even though I’ve been following you for a long time, and you’ve shared many of these tips and modeled them, it was great to see them in a concise list.
Guess I'll have to mend my ways. In the past, I would only iron if someone held a gun to my head OR if I had a calculus exam to study for. You are right that putting out clothes in their best condition gives us a good base to style an outfit. I love your (seemingly) effortless style. You always look great--stylish, presentable and comfortable.
Having a record of what works in your wardrobe together and how you styled it is priceless. I will suddenly think how will that x top work with these slacks...so I start trying on and it turns into an hour..I am retired so can do that. NOW the combos that are the BEST I take a photo...because no way will I remener that combo two weeks from now. This is work well for me...I dont photo the duds!
It was the strangest thing when my body started changing at age 50. It kind of settled into a whole new shape. I love it, but also considering I moved from a tropical environment, back to a cooler one, I had to totally begin working out how to dress myself and revisit my style. Thanks for keeping this dialogue going, its so helpful.
You are so right! Nobody is perfect. I sometimes have the feeling that nothing looks normal (proportions etc) on me and I then blame myself and thats so wrong. I love your style, your content and it is so inspiring! For me it is helpful to let my kids or my husband take photos of me, so I can see myself from their eyes and often I get more friendly to myself. Thank you so much for your videos, Alyssa 😘
These are excellent tips and so easy to follow. I used to "play" in my closet regularly (and looked much more put together because of it). Then I had kids and did not make the time. This video really helps put me back on track. Hope you are planning a new workshop soon.
Thanks for the positive body comments. So many of us struggle with this aspect. Such helpful advice. I struggled for decades to find my style. It's still a work in progress 😊
Lol, I have the time to tweak/fuss on weekends and date nights with hubby, but work weekdays I'm just trying to get out of the house with my go-to outfits. If a garment requires too much styling I give it away. You are 100% right, few garments are perfect on our body. I have vastly improved other garments by sewing/altering. The other day, I sewed the button plackets together on 2 Rails featherweight cotton button-downs that always made me looked disheveled. Now the shirt drapes nice, there's no gapes. ( Bottoms not sewn so I can still tie into a knot.) The shirts went from barely worn to being on regular rotation. It was a five minute hand-stitched fix for each shirt.
I know my body shape well now, at age 63, and know that one thing I’ll always have to do is “dehip” my dresses. I stitch the sides straight and eliminate the hip curve, there’s no way my skinny hips will ever fill out a fitted dress properly. At last, I don’t consider this a “figure fault” it’s just that clothing is designed for whatever average shape the manufacturer has in mind. Those averages usually have much rounder, fuller hips (and bottom) than I do. It took me years to figure out why my waist is “too big”, it isn’t that, it’s just that my hips are narrower than average clothing cuts. I think we women, especially younger ones, are far to self-critical about ourselves in general. Unfortunately, this is caused by societal conditioning, beginning with our parents.
Thank you for freeing up the fashion clutter in my brain. You have a calming way of sharing your knowledge. Thank you. Would you mind sharing where you purchased the top you are wearing in this video? It is beautiful 😍
Love this. Where did you get the blouse that you have on this video? I’ve been looking for some classic blouses in classic color but I don’t want anything that’s boring. I love the sleeve details on your white blouse in this video. Can you do a video on classic pieces that have a little something extra and where to buy them?
I really enjoyed this video, then again I always enjoy your videos. Thank you again for inspiring me to make the things I have work. I am very proud to say that apart from two T-shirts I have not purchased "new" clothing in over a year. I have only purchased second hand. That is a big step for me personally and one that I am very proud of. Best Wishes.
1. Steam or iron. The clothes will drape better. 2. Does the garment actually fit? What do you want to look in clothes? 3. Do I want over sized look? Do I want... Tip Try your outfit on the night before. 4. Where do you want to emphasize? Signature look repeat something.
Great tips - love your style. I also think that you have to add your list of 4 - underwear choice. The wrong panty line, the right bra or some control pants can make or break an outfit!
Thank you, Alyssa, for your very thoughtful and helpful fashion insights. Every time I watch one of your videos, I want to head immediately to my closet to try the new ideas that are popping into my head!
I think it's important to distinguish between boring repetition and signature style. Thank you for mentioning this. I have an hourglass figure, so I love to belt and tuck everything. It never feels dull or repetitive to me. It feels like my personality and style shining through. I wear my clothes in ways that most of my friends wouldn't but I feel fabulous when I am true to me, my body and my style.
What I find when I put an outfit on, is making a hair/jewelry tweak. A lot of times with me it's changing the hair that makes the outfit feel more...me...polished...finished. Sometimes it's earrings or a watch, but most of the time it's my hair.
@@kateburford4025 oh! I wish I did to share! I'm sorry. I typically do a high bun, or I've been doing this half up half down. I have a couple of styles I stick to and usually one of those work with most of my outfits. Pinterest has helped me find styles I want to try. Sorry I couldn't help more!
Thank you Alyssa, so perfect as always. I decided more than 10 years ago (my 2x girls are now nearrly 18 and 20) that any fit issues are always a problem with the clothing, and definitely not me! Where would i find your gorgeous cream 3/4 trouser? BTW, I'd like to mention we lived in Montreal for 2 years about 16 years ago - now back in Melbourne, Australia......
I love to iron! My work clothes are mostly “dry-clean only” and always look polished, boosting my confidence instead of looking rumpled which makes me feel rumpled and blah. Dry cleaning is super expensive, but worth the investment making suits and dresses last longer. Tweaking an outfit with an accessory can take the outfit from the donation pile to wow, this is a keeper.
Steaming hack: Spray the garment with clear water, un-crumple the garment with your hands (I lay mine on my bed), and 5 minutes or less in the dryer. Your clothes won't look "perfect" but it's a vast improvement over looking like Wrinkled up Wanda!😂😊😅❤😂😅😊
Like you are pointing, the way you are styling your clothe piece, you have to make magic, to improve your look for the day. Like I a medium top proportion that I have to style with tank tops (,black or white wish El hate😰) but light close piece can style my proportions, specialty on my top🤔
Awesome video Alyssa. Thank you, I enjoyed it. Great ideas ❤. I am so glad I came across you channel last night and I couldn't stop watching your videos. I subscribed and looking forward to more great ideas.
When I was at Uni I had a monthly clothes swap with a friend. We were technically the same number size on clothes but so many things that suited me didn’t suit her and vice versa. That really taught me that it’s the clothes that need to suit me, not my body needing to change. The other advice I always love is to treat yourself and your body like a dear friend. I love my friends so much and I have never given a thought to them having to look a certain way.
Your videos, content and audio are always so great, regardless of the environment (indoor/outdoor/etc.) - would you mind sharing which mic you use? And I love the idea of hiding it by clipping it to the bra - genius!!
Hi Alyssa, I’m trying to click on the link for Analuisa jewelry. I can’t get to the earrings and I also can’t find your paper clip necklace. Any help? Thank you!

What I find when I put an outfit on, is making a hair/jewelry tweak. A lot of times with me it's changing the hair that makes the outfit feel more...me...polished...finished. Sometimes it's earrings or a watch, but most of the time it's my hair.
Do you have any favourite hair tutorials? I have shoulder length hair but no idea how to ‘style’ it beyond a ponytail.
I now pay more attention to fit and to maximize usage. Fantasy dressing, extreme sales, and unflattering fit I no longer fall victim for.
Ok, but I wouldn’t ever put damp things on the bed. Drying out the sheets after sleeping is important to keeping down dust mites and allergies.
Oh, I love those white or (maybe cream) pants that you wore with the big navy blouse. Do you have a link for those are some similar?
I have the same steamer ..it is really GREAT .. the water lasts a long time ;)
Like you are pointing, the way you are styling your clothe piece, you have to make magic, to improve your look for the day. Like I a medium top proportion that I have to style with tank tops (,black or white wish El hate😰) but light close piece can style my proportions, specialty on my top🤔
Great tips, now i just need to Remember them 😅
Also i LOOOOVE your white top ❤
I love ironing too. It’s therapy and an Italian thing. I grew up in a long line of seamstresses;))😂❤😂
Thank you Alyssa, I have learnt so much from you. Remain blessed xxx
Awesome video Alyssa. Thank you, I enjoyed it. Great ideas ❤. I am so glad I came across you channel last night and I couldn't stop watching your videos. I subscribed and looking forward to more great ideas.
Love your videos! Do you have any favourite “tweeks” to try out?
I so needed to hear the first few minutes!❤
I am still thrilled a year later you turned me onto laundry detergent strips. I think they are the best thing since sliced bread.
It’s refreshing to know our bodies are not flawed!
Where did you get your blue crossbody purse? Perfect size ❤
Seen!! The eternal struggle of loving 100% cotton, linen & silk and hating to iron & steam.

Your videos, content and audio are always so great, regardless of the environment (indoor/outdoor/etc.) - would you mind sharing which mic you use? And I love the idea of hiding it by clipping it to the bra - genius!!
