Manifest V3 sunsetting v2 does annoy me, but he's right about companion windows. Unlike regular pop-ups, they can't be used for spam ads. They are in the content area, they do not overlay other websites or any navigation button you'd need, and they don't bother you in anything you're doing. Rather than pop-up windows, they're pop-up sections.
Taking youtube as an example, it would allow you to browse anywhere on youtube while the video is still playing. It is a premium feature but it isn't as smooth as it could be, as you can't move it around, and it doesn't really integrate back all that well when you go back to the video's page. With that API, it'd be way smoother.

I'm beginning to feel like all my favorite youtubers are becoming more and more about ads and less and less about relatable content. like others have mentioned: you have already indicated support ofr adblockers being removed with V3 and now you're supporting ad windows being brought back. Are we not inundated enough? It's like Google is actively trying to force ads into every experience they are involved in, actively ruining the internet, and you're sitting there clapping and cheering for it's demise. Popups were never once a good thing and I respect you significantly less for taking these stances on the constant clawing and scraping at our information and attention.

  • @markeggers8356
    @markeggers8356 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

    Just, no.
This is so ripe for abuse that it's not even funny. Let's play ads one after the other in a popup window that is either docked or follows an element around on your page (through multiple pages). Let's not add a way to close this. Let's have it play audio as well.
I can see countless ways to abuse this, and very few use cases that can't already be kludged around. Are those hacks annoying? Yes. Are they imperfect? Yes. The alternative is to have a popup window playing audio and video ads as I navigate the site, and can't be dealt with unless I leave the site.
Would developers do such a thing (floating ads that cannot be caught or destroyed)? Yes. For sites with important information, you'll now have a captive audience.
    Again, just no.

Man, people are really freaking out over nothing, right? They hear the term "pop-up" and assume that what is being designed is a separate window API. From reading the docs, it sounds like a typical inline pop-up library.
This API could be implemented in JS today, but the reason they want to implement it into the browser appears to be to make it more responsive (since they want to attach it to elements). The biggest criticism of it is that it wants to be a standard when it doesn't need to be.
Could ADs use it? Sure, but they already do this behavior anyways.

Why does Google autotranslate this video to German and change the Title to "Begleitfenster"? What does that word even mean (I am German)?

I think this not very useful. They mention a live news player as an example, but when I go to a news site, I don't ever want any videos playng, and I actively close all of the annoying players

Scum devs will actually adhere to ethical advertising standards?
    Ha ha.
This scourge was curtailed since a few decades ago.
What makes you think they won't repeat bad behavior, where there is little incentive to not do so?
It isn't just limited to monitor screen real-estate, audio cues, memory usage, etc.
Those are annoying and attention-grabbers, yes.
Malicious links, background process triggers, hidden malware.
Stop being a clueless, hopeful optimist.

The negativity in the comments is kneejerk. There are so many pro-user cases for decoupling select content from the history stack. Manual implementation is a minefield, which is why it often doesn't exist when it should.
