  • Champion (old) vs. Magneti Marelli (brand new)
Ignition Coil Pack Resistance and Continuity Test
    UPDATE:
You can enable the english subtitles of the video!
The measured values of the two installed ignition coils should be the same with very little difference, and the values should be in the reference interval.
In this video you can see that the old Champion coil pack which already run more than 200.000 km is still not bad but in some values the difference is bigger than of the brand new coil pack.
This resistance test is not 100% reliable because under heavy load still a good looking coil pack can fail! The coil pack are connected directly to the engine so it can be very hot and in this way shortening its life.
A bad coil pack can kill the ECU and make engine issues, missfires, it is important to check and not to forget to replace them in time.
    Info:
LT is the side where the connector is plugged into the coilpack, Power IN is coming from the ECU.
HT is where the plug leads join the coil, Power OUT.
Coil Pack1 produce outputs to cylinder 1&4
Coil Pack2 produce outputs to cylinder 2&3
    UPDATE:
What i recently found is that the correct HT Output resistance (where the plug leads join the coil) should be in interval of 7.3 - 7.5 kOhm and the two coil pack difference should be less than 15%. Consistency between the 2 pairs is important.
LT in resistance should be 0.7~0.8 Ohms
Hi, if you think i made any mistake in the video or i forgot to mention important things, please let me know in the comment section below. Thanks.

Hey.. What happens if I connect the wrong cylinder to the coil.. For ex connect the 2nd cylinder to the 1&4 coil

Hi. Nice and needed tips. Thnx a lot :)
What were the symptoms you were having before coil pack changing and did it fix it?

I did not have bigger issues, i just wanted to check the state of the old coil packs and ignition cables and replace them with brand new in time! I found that one ignition cable was broken (small plastic was missing where the cable was connected to the spark plug). After changing them the engine idle got better, and slightly better performance, i think. If you dont replace the coil packs in time they can kill the ECU, so this is also an important reason i changed them. They can also cause cylinder missfiring, and engine power loss in higher revs...

      Ok, good to know.
I just got issues with ignition leads randomly grounding to cylinder head where they meet spark plugs. New set of leads have been ordered. Checked also coil pacs as in ur video - readings were good.
Thnx for this vid mate - helped me a lot :)

It is my pleasure! :) Ignition leads can make serious issues, usually there is a very small hole on the cover (not easy to find) so the grounding occurs randomly (especially in very hot temperature)! I use NGK leads and NGK spark plugs, but for the coil packs i use Magneti Marelli. :)

Hello tomas, on the Ht input resistance test i'm getting 2.6ohm and 2.8 ohms on the other coil..
On the HT output resistance test, i'm getting 7.4 kohm and 7.3kohm..
    What means this result?
And also when i tried to measure continuity on the HT output pin there was no result.. number 1 was on the screen nothing else...

On the last testing in kohm, i'm getting exactly 8 kohm(8000ohm) for the two ht transformers.. and for the two coils output .. Is that meaning that i should change the two coils ? I'm getting random missfires on cylinder p0352 and sometimes on p0351... in hot weather the missfires are more present... it's fiat punto mk2 1.2 8v 44kw 2004

    • @p.thomas4099

Hi, HT output resistance should be in interval of 7.3-7.5 kOhm and the two coil pack difference should be less than 15%.
When you have a missfire you have to see the blinking yellow engine lamp, which indicates malfunction. When the lamp is blinking check the rpm and if it is between about 3100-3300 maybe you have to check the ignition control!
Missfires can indicate buildup on valves, pistons or worn pistons (piston rings) also ...
I think you should replace the two coils first to Magneti Marelli (preferred) or Champion and all the spark plugs and cables also to NGK.

@@p.thomas4099 Hey friend again.. I replace the coil that is giving voltage to the second and third cylinder.. And now i dont get anymore the P0352 code.. Now i get only P0351 code.. So for sure that means i have to change also the other coil.. hope that i will have positive result.. what is your opinion ? My ht leads and spark plugs are changed 🙂

@@ДаниелСпасовски-ъ4к Hi, Always replace both of the coils from same vendor. A faulty coil can damage the ECU! I think this should solve your problem. If not than you may have problems with the ignition or with the pistons. But in this case I dont think.
