The Beginning of the End of SD Services on Satellite - 8th January 2024

- After 25 years in service, all the BBC SD channels on Sky / Freesat were closed down forever on Monday 8th January 2024, marking the beginning of the end of SD Services on Satellite in the UK & Ireland.
It's pretty clear that this is the beginning of the end, as ITV also followed suit and closed the SD versions of ITV3, ITV4 and ITVBe and some regional SD variants of ITV1, STV and UTV the following day. I'd imagine ITV2 SD and channels of other services (e.g. Channel 4 / Sky) will soon follow suit in the future.
This video will show me channel surfing through all the now defunct BBC SD channels with the upgrade message that will be displayed until March 2024, as well as the ITV SD channels that closed the following day. Also, I surf through the BBC Radio channels (checking if they still work but my box is HD capable so a bit of a pointless decision really) and look through the Red Button Service (was checking to see if it would still work and it does, but looks extremely out of date):
Unfortunately, I was not able to capture the actual BBC SD closedowns as this was scheduled to happen at 6am (which I set my recorder for), but it didn't take place until 10:54am. BBC Three, Four, Scotland and Alba were not on air anyway at the time of closure and as of the upload date of this video, no one has yet uploaded BBC RB 1's closure
I am however in the process of recording continuity from the "proposed" final day (Sunday 7th January) of each SD channel (and the actual SD closedowns of BBC Scotland, Alba, Three & Four) as well as continuity from the final evening of the SD versions of ITV3, ITV4 and ITVBe, which will be uploaded over the coming months.
Special Thanks to [BlueFrogTV], SuperLegendary and Ivan O Sullivan for managing to capture some the actual BBC SD closedowns and the surrounding continuity despite the confusion in the actual time given in articles and from Sky themselves.
UPDATE MARCH 2024: The BBC SD channels were completely wiped from Sky SD boxes on 26th March 2024. Around the same time, I have discovered that Sky will be closing their SD Cinema and Sport channels in May 2024, then switching over their SD entertainment channels to DVB-S2 by August 2024. No news yet on the remainder of the ITV SD channels or other major broadcasters.

Yep. Although they were completed wiped from the EPG at 1pm so I missed the closedown of those.

Yep. And CBBC Extra too. Good memories of those when I had a Freeview only TV as a kid.
As I was filming this, I had absolutely no idea that the Red Button would still work on the SD channels - I only checked out of curiosity. I was surprised to still see the graphics of CBeebies Red Button and CBBC Extra.

@@cocugrimshaw9586 towards the last weeks of the closure message the graphics were removed and the red button fuctions were reduced to headlines only.

bbc and sky are trying to make everyone go to sky q but then no need for this become were have 2 HD boxs anyway
I think they be tryna push people onto Sky Glass or Sky Stream slowly. Because that's all you hear about Sky TV stuff. And reason they be pushing people to get Sky Q, is because I think it's a hassle to keep having to install cables into many rooms. Best advice, don't get it. It is awkward, because with a Mini Sky Q box, you need the main box activated and remain on (not to turn into weird eco mode at night) if you wanna watch tv on the Mini box AND the recordings are all under the 1 main Sky Q box. But the mini box does act as a Wi-Fi boost hotspot in your house.
If you record and like to keep old archives of movies and shows separately, just keep the Sky + HD
That is why I refuse to upgrade to Sky Q for exactly those reasons whilst living as a family.
My parents both use Sky Q. If you only have one box, it's a good product as I find the apps useful, but as a multiroom product, I hate it because the mini boxes are slow, buggy and unreliable.
I personally don't like how recordings are under 1 box, although some people prefer that like my mum who watches TV in different rooms, so it benefits some and that is fine but there should be the option to disable it or have the option to view other recordings available but still having a section for the box's own recordings (like how Virgin's V6 works). I get Sky may not want to use hard drives but if so, why not use Cloud recordings (as it for some channels on Stream) - funnily enough, the recordings issue is "fixed" on Stream/Glass as they use profiles but they have their own problems.
We tried Sky Q after moving from Virgin Media and didn't like it (The planner layout is awful as episodes get mixed up but my autistic sister hated it as she found having "other people's recordings" on the box stressful and it caused lots of issues should as our recordings being deleted, and her mini box kept disconnecting so she smashed it in the end) but after explaining the situation to Sky, they generously let us have a Sky+HD box (and I brought another one second hand as I prefer the HD boxes for recording) whilst Mum keeps the main Sky Q box. It works smoothly but the majority of quarrels I have with Sky Q could have been fixed but won't be as it's all about Glass/Stream now
