    Loved your tip about keeping it in the pot while filling up the bigger pot with soil. Smart! Also I'll be trying to grow stevia for the first time this spring so thanks for the tips!

    Thanks for your insights on growing stevia. You did a fine job .I like your accent Here in central Florida I grow stevia in big pots and they do well but the seeds are tiny so they need fine soil or seed starting mix and careful watering for germination. Hope to catch your other vids.Have a super week,mate.

      It is! Torturous, 😂. I finally ended up getting some BEAUTIFUL starts on Etsy from a wonderful seller. Packaged extremely well with no soil loss and they have been happily transplanted. So far, so good. My biggest issue is overwatering so I’m being really conscious of that. 🤞

    Great Job, thanks for the info, not a lot of luck growing stevia, been able to propagate stems using plastic bags covering the pots and keeping something alive for the last few years but no great yield so far. Only problems I have had are mice eating all the leaves off the plants, so have a cat now and seems he also likes stevia and eating it. now all my plants I have left are up in the air and seem to be ok till the next problem arises. Which brings me to the BIG question now, I got spearment & peppermint plants to repeal the mice now which seems to work very well, the spearment is doing great not a problem so far but the peppermint I have had to toss out for mint rust and start over after Neem oil treatment that seemed to work for a while but eventually all of it died. My new plants start out arriving healthy looking for a while but after a time even they started losing their leaves, all are in large pots with new potting mix. Peppermint all warnings say very invasive and to contain them hence the large pots. I keep some outside and some inside all watered, keeping just a lightly moist soil to the touch. Any words of wisdom than can help me, on the stevia and the peppermint. Peppermint for me seems to have the greatest effect to keeping mice away. Thanks, hope you have some words of advice.

    Dude why did you plant that Stevia in one corner of the big pot ? I didnt hear you say why later on in the video as you said you would explain.

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was because I planted a small flowering bush on the other side of the pot, so I wanted to make room for it! Cheers Barry

      Nice, its great to grow! Although seeds are very hard to germinate so I buy seedlings, but you might have a better climate. I water mine every few days. Cheers Karen, all the best with it!

    Thank you. I am thinking of getting a Stevia plant and was wondering how well it would do in about the size pot you have it in. I read that it grows to about 3ft X 3ft so I didn't know if it needed a huge pot.

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are in a warmer area then absolutely, if you're in the cooler climates than if you grow it in a sunny location and can bring it indoors if it snows then it should do well. Cheers Kishan

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of online nurseries have stevia seeds, although they are particularly difficult to grow from seed (as in germinating them) so I've found it more time and money efficient to grow them from seedlings. Cheers Rockj

    Does this sugary plant attract ants?

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can, but only if it infested with aphids or another honeydew secreting insect. Ants don't directly feed on it. Cheers Cons

    I want to grow stevia this spring but it’s my first time growing anything and I feel like I’m going to mess it up.
    Do you have any tips for me??

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's awesome! Sure do! keep it in a sunny and warm spot, keep the soil moist and look at the leaves (as weird as that sounds). The leaves (should be dark green and firm) tell you when the plant is deficient in certain nutrients and water. Hope it goes well for you Seb! Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.

    G'day young sir.... Is Stevia a tropical plant? I wonder if I could grow some here in Canada? I'll have to look into that. Thanks for sharing Jacob . :)

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      G'day Cleo! Yeah it is a tropical plant (coming from northern South America) but I've grown it in a cold climate before and had reasonably good results!
      No problem mate! 👍

      Stevia is very frost tender. Bring it indoors before the frosts start.

      In my experience Ive actually never had any problems with frost. Dont know if there are different varieties or not that are better at handling frosts. Cheers mate & have a good one!
