  • #KiwiRail #Whanganui #Railway DFB 7173 & DFB 7160 lead train 565 (Castlecliff - Wellington) down the Whanganui Town Branch in New Zealand. Thirty-Two container wagons make up the consist.
This is the Victoria Avenue Crossing at the foot of St Johns Hill. Vehicles make their way along State Highway 3 from the bottom to the right hand side of the screen. The locomotives are DFB7160 & DFB7173 and were a class of 30 built by General Motors Diesel of Canada between 1979 and 1981. They were turbocharged during an upgrade in the 1990's. The 'B' means the locomotives have recieved the Brightstar engine management system in the 2010's. The containers were loaded at Castlecliff in the industrial zone of Whanganui. Milk powder exports dominate the outward loads.
The curve in the video was recently laid with 91lb rail on concrete sleepers and has been attended to by a Track Tamper & Ballast Regulator. To the left of the shot however, the branch still retains great lenghts of jointed 71lb rail. You can hear the clickety-clack of the 71lb. Trains are restricted to 25km/hr on the Town Branch.
