In this video, I show the best ways to mindmap in Obsidian. Obsidian is a next-generation note-taking tool aiming to compete with the likes of Roam Research, and it's 100% FREE! It can assist you in building a connected personal knowledge management system.

Thank-you for the video. I have to say, compared with dedicated MM software, this plug-in is limited and very clunky. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts and personal workflow but I'll continue to brainstorm/mind-sweep in my MM app, do some initial grouping and arrangement, then import my MM into my PKM.

Makes sense. There’s definitely compromises when trying to use Obsidian for more than note taking.

Thank you for the video! The Enhancing Mindmap plugin looks good - will give it a try.
Note: Github says the latest release was a year ago and there seem to be new commits after that. Are you using the version of the plugin that can be installed via Obsidian or are you installing a more recent version manually?

I'm using the version available in Obsidians community plugins. Yes, it has not been updated in a year. That doesn't necessarily mean good or bad but it is a big challenge/concern with a lot of the community plugins. The developer for this plugin has been responding to recent comments in GitHub so that's a plus and I have not had any issues. The plugin simply uses a markdown outline structure that I can easily use with another plugin, in Xmind or other mindmap applications that support markdown. So I'm not concerned if the plugin goes away or stops working.

The other Canvas plugins I find useful are, i) Simple CanvasSearch for modal that does a node fuzzy find and jumps straight to the selected node, and ii) Canvas Keyboard Pan which lets you pan the canvas using hot keys.
I like using key bindings, so one annoyance is there is no native key binding to select a node, then move onto navigation. But, the Simple CanvasSearch will activate a node using keys.

It depends on the plugins you have installed.

I find there's like four or five plugins for the canvas which each have a function of how I want it to work. The main one is Canvas Mindmap for the Alt + Arrow navigation keys, but there navigate spatially rather than the structure of the edges, and its a bit buggy.

I show this plugin in action in the video and while okay it’s not great. I’m trying to minimize my plugins so the simplest option is better for me. But to each their own.

Miro... general graphic App, that does a wide range of forms and styles for your graphics.

I love Miro but I’ve been needing it less after leaving corporate IT. I’ve been using Canva as a replacement to Miro when white-boarding ideas and collaborating.
