I'm also not a huge fan of the tarheel nest and I'll use wood for whatever species will tolorate it. I have a massive camponotus discolor colony and they started out in this exact same foranto nest.
You don't need to hydrate a wooden nest, ants that like to live in wood naturally have the ability to hydrate the brood manually. You just have to make sure they have a constant water supply. I built a wooden nest myself for my camponotus and it's working flawlessly!
@@Antramblings I have camponotus herculeanus in it, they're native to where I live. But I'm pretty sure all camponotus like wood. Don't quote me on that tho, i could be wrong. Just do a little research about a species and see if they live in wood in nature, and I'm sure they'll like a wooden nest as well!
Great video Yes tar hill nests are good but limitations mean that they are not for every species of ants I also have had issues with cleaning them after moving a colony
I owed 4 tarheel mini hearths not a huge fan to be honest. Still have 2. None of your complaints are wrong except for the nest mate. That shit is so good. I use them in my Frando nests.
@@EstheticAnts I use the blockers from my other nests and just replace the nest mate with the blocker. Or if I'm up on my cleaning I have an extra I fill and swap out(easy to diy). You can scare them away by moving the nest mate until the ants on it move away. I just kinda reangle it so I don't hurt them.
I need to take better care of my colony, but in my experience camponotus decipiens is very slow growing and they don't get very big. I have seen mature colony's that size
the video was cool and i think i know which are going to be the new species to the channel
Thanks, please do tell me!
Keep up the good work!
Thank you Esther!
I think the tarheel is very pretty.. hoping to move my sanctus and fedtschenkoi one day!
But I must say.. the wood looks pretty good!!
Yes nice nests indeed, just not for me😅

Hello sexy EA
Great Video!
Thanks!
Finally an update on them
You were waiting for so long!!!
True😅
I just ordered a mini hearth from tarheelants. I hope I like it.
I think you will!
They are a nice looking sp and i really want to make a wood nest to try myself just worried about the hydration .
You shouldn't and don't need to hydrate wood
@@EstheticAnts cool ,would need to choose the sp that's going in carefully though .

Oh really? Interesting😅
Welke grote nest zou ik moeten nemen als ik een kolonie van 200 plus w camponotus Parius heb?
(Gaast nest bedoel ik)
De grootste
@@EstheticAnts thx
Wat een fantastische video dit is een ban je betere video's
Your white paper isn't blocking light just an FYI.

Dont they pull the Cotton out of the hole and celebrate their freedom soon or later?
No they aren't strong enough for that!
@@EstheticAnts ah ok good to know. I saw a few videos about these nests, and they always used testubes. :D But good to know Cotton works as well.
'These are American ants' isn't it bad to introduce a foreign species to Europe?
I'm not introducing them in the wild
I heard ants canada said they seized some queens that were imported into the phillipines, so wasn't sure. Looks interesting though!
@@riomouris4767 yes but that's in Azia. In Europe that is fine.
@@riomouris4767 mate do your research.....it's legal in Europe to keep Non native species (Still check where u live tho BC city law may change)
