Correction
The renouncing of love wasn't just a condition for taking the gold. Alberich says in his curse that you would have to renounce love to even use the Ring's power. Just having it on you wouldn't be enough to benefit from it.

You left out the significance of the gold: If made into a ring, the wearer has the power to rule the world. Also...I'm pretty sure the premiere was in 1876.
