Wagner's Das Rheingold -- A Psychological Analysis

  • This SophiaCycles Video Essay takes a look at the first drama of Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle in an a psychological/archetypal way. Looked at as a metaphor for the mid-life crisis, Rheingold explores the many challenges that arise during this liminal time in life. In the end, Rheingold is a fairy tale and it uses many of the same tropes we find in fairy tales from across the world. This does not mean it is a children's fable, however. Just as with other fairy tales, a careful analysis of Das Rheingold yields many deep truths.

    Love your analysis! The stock symphony music became a little distracting but overall this is a great video.

    A superb video and explanation of the deeper inner meaning. E flat is no accident as the opening chord as the music scale A to G corresponds to the Chakra system within. Therefore E flat suggests an, as yet, unrisen Light from within the solar plexus.
    I have been feeling so much revealed through Wagner and also in pure sound via Anton Bruckner. I fully intend to address and explain all that is pointed at as being odd behaviour in Bruckner as there is far more to this.
    In a way, Wagner's Ring Cycle is a condensed version of the same message in The Bible.
    Thank you for this fascinating video.

    Excellent commentary. The number 3, as you point out, defines manifold possibilities. I noticed immediately that you avoided the Christian Trinity; this doctrine was necessary for Christianity to become a religion and not just a philosophical movement within the context of Judaism.

      Good point. If something is left out it's more due to how difficult it is to make these videos concise. The subject is so vast and complex! Thank you for weighing in.

      @@SophiaCycles i've always wondered how such epic and beautiful music could come from such a despicable man. You helped answer that 👍

    Wow. Thank you. Not a happy ending. Surely there’s a hope, or another sacrifice, another way. Who knows. Perhaps Wagner has left it at the only place he could? -either where He himself, IS, right at that moment he wrote it, or where WE are, as a culture at the moment he wrote it. Maybe. This is just what came immediately to me. It’s something I think I’m beginning to see in stories. Thanks so much

      Look at what both Frantz Fanon and Zizek’s take on the young Hegelians via Marx and Lacan- Hegel view still stands vs his fascination and indebtedness to Schopenhauer - Hegel’s radical philosophy wins… and it remains an open- not closed circle. It’s Mythic and it is Our Story, told differently, but the Themes, how we answer them, maybe more importantly,how we don’t…. This IS Us trying to make of make sense of the “Why’s “-
      It is no wonder that Jesseye Norman is one of the most powerful interpreters of Wagner and Strauss- Poetic

    Why didn't this video use Wagner's music? There is no shortage of it.

    • @SophiaCycles
      @SophiaCycles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have the right to use that music under copyright laws, unfortunately. Even using bits of the video is problematic but as these essays are for educational purposes only, it is mostly fine. Using music for which I don't have the rights to would get the video banned. I encourage people to find recordings of the actual works.

      Or see it in full, in person. I've seen 2 complete productions (Opéra Bastille, in 2013 for bicentenary, and Staatsoper Berlin in 2020 or so when Staatsoper Unter den Linden was re-opened after - quite literally - having its roof raised), and I have tickets for Deutsche Oper, Berlin in May 2024. I can't get enough Wagner.
      Anyway, these days, CDs and DVDs of the complete operas are readily available and very cheap compared to what I paid for them back in the 80s when all my disposable income went on them.
      Oh, and, I really enjoyed this video, thanks! :)

    Not a word about Erda!

    • @etiennedevignolles7538
      @etiennedevignolles7538 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can't cover everything, I assume you have never had to do an essay for a degree or higher degree with limited word-count. What do you think mention of Erda could have added in, say, an extra 30 seconds of this video essay?
      If you are interested in the Ring Cycle, I suggest reading Sir Roger Scruton's "The Ring of Truth".
