  • Sir Keir Starmer has said he is not in favour of banning mobile phone for under-16s, but suggested there should be stronger controls around what content children can access on the devices.
The Prime Minister said his teenage children have phones but declined to say whether their use is restricted.
It comes as Esther Ghey, the mother of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey, is campaigning for an age limit for smartphone usage and stricter controls on access to social media apps.
Talk’s Alex Phillips discusses the story with former Government adviser James Price.

Kids coming out of school in the afternoon turn into zombie phone walkers. Staring at their phones whilst walking straight out into the road, what could possibly go wrong.......

ANYTHING that reduces the screen time of kids is going to be massively beneficial to both their mental and physical health. Kids should be socialising in person and out doing things in youth oriented organisations like scouts. The phones may be smarter, but they are making our children dumber!
And never mind 16, it should be 18 or even 21.

18 and 21 ? So they can go to work at 18 but not allowed a smart phone? School kids I agree but 18 and above ? How about Mind your own business

A ban on smartphones until 21 is utterly unhinged, adulthood starts somewhere between 16-18. Why on earth would you restrict someone who is living an adult life from having a smartphone. Do you have any idea how crucial a smartphone is to getting literally anything done these days. Please don't have kids.

How long has starmer and Raynor been having an affair. Does his wife know about it. Raynor is never more than ten feet away from him and always has the smile of a lovesick teenager when she's there

This day in age phones are a vital bit of safety kit for youngsters because of all the predators out there and now starmer has bought even more over to put our kids at risk.

Complete garbage! The smartphones enable access to kids for the predators you mention!
Social media is a far greater risk to children than any other predator!

It is the job of parents to decide on what devices their children use. Getting the government to do their job for them. Just ban the use in schools. I have worked in places where all mobiles were banned in the workplace. You hand them in during working hours and retrieve them at break time and the end of work. It was not a big problem.

Parents are to blame, they buy the smartphones and don't activate parental controls on most smartphones today which can restrict use of the phone, parents don't do this because they don't want to deal with the fallout
