I decided to buy a monitor after I watched your first video where you discussed the merits of using them. I bought a Shimbol M5 5.5 as I don't need the recording function. I am amazed at the difference it has made in my photography, it was a complete revelation when I could see the camera view on the screen and be able to nail critical focus and to have an accurate view of the composition on a larger screen. Thanks for all the info and the heads up Thomas!
Thank you very much! I'm very happy to hear that you like the Shimbol 5.5" as much as I do - such a great piece of equipment. Having an external monitor in general is truly a revelation, I completely agree with what you stated! Thanks and all the best, Thomas 📸
I really like this channel. I found it by chance recently and love how you convey the knowledge you have. It reminds me a bit of the explaining computers channel. Keep up the good work Thomas. I will be following closely! Best regards. Bue.
Thank you VERY much for your continued, generous support! I'll put your contribution to good use and do my best to continue providing content that is hopefully relevant to you. Thanks again. Yours, Thomas
And also inreally appreciate showing all the love for OM system. Its such a great tool for anyone. Just wish to record braw and also as we all wish 4k 120fps for wildlife.
Thank you! As you've seen a few hours ago, I've just published my first video in my larger series on filmmaking with the OM-1! There is a lot to discover, it is such a powerful tool. Best, Thomas
As a photography enthusiast who recently had eye surgery for early-onset cataracts (eye lenses replaced with synthetic ones), my eyes have completely lost the ability to adjust focus. Interesting I now have better than 20/20 vision for distance, but anything nearer is completely blurry. It's extremely annoying to have to wear reading glasses just to control my camera, let alone read the screen (and while the EFV has dioptre adjustment, the EVF is not practical in many instances), I have seriously been considering getting one of these screens. My biggest deterrent so far has been that I believe it is impossible to access on-screen camera controls when using one of these screens; is this a correct assumption? Thomas, thanks very much for this "eye opening" video about something I have been very curious about. All the best.
Thanks for sharing and your positive, very encouraging feedback - your situation is basically a prime example why you want to add a monitor to your setup. It is true that you cannot use the touch controls, as only a video signal is sent to the monitor. In practice, however, I found that to be a non-issue. Depending on camera model, there should be a convenient way to control the cameras functions w/o using touch. If you have any questions, feel free to follow up. Also, you might find the video linked in the description helpful!
Very nice! You should show your voigtlander collection at some point. They seem very good, and there's not much content about them on TH-cam beside the leica variants.
@@ThomasEisl.Photography Please review the 29mm / f0.8! I have been on the verge of buying one for some time now but just can't find any objective descriptions or recommendations. I'm sure it is a good lens. But for the price it really needs to be much more than just good.
Great! It'd be interesting to hear your take on why buy a high quality manual lens today vs an autofocus one, when to and not to use them, and of course, the images they produce. Great work!
Interesting video. I purchased a 5.5 inch monitor for my OM-1 orchid photography but was disappointed to discover that the OM-1 HMDI support is not compatible with focus stacking which I use for my orchid photography. In cases where I am not using focus stacking, however, I have found the "small" monitor to be fine and I can easily analyze focus. Just wish it worked with focus stacking! Can you recommend a cage for the OM-1?
Thanks David! The cage I'm using in this video is this one: www.smallrig.com/smallrig-camera-cage-for-om-system-om-1-3948.html It fits the OM-1 like a glove, an excellent product. It does not add additional protection, but is perfect for mounting a monitor. Best, Thomas PS: Yes, the focus stacking limitation is a pity.
Hi. Can you share more information about the OM1 mark 2 video features and does it record 4.2.2 external raw on blackmagic monitor? I prefer braw. Can you suggest any other external monitor for braw. Thank you. I find very less information about shooting video. Kindly share your thoughts.
Hello! It is a stopgap solution - a "real" monitor brings many advantages in terms of usability, image quality and so on. If your budget allows, I would go for a monitor! Best, Thomas 📸
Thanks you very much! Regarding the privacy warning - yes, I get the same warning but it is their official site. I'm gonna send them an email and let them know so they can fix it.
I envy people who can afford these types of cameras, lenses and gear... I mean, the OM-System looks awesome but it's clearly Pro quality stuff that is far beyond my ability ever have afforded. But as they say, it's the photographer not the value of equipment that matters most to being imaginative and skillful - outside of some commercial and industrial standards, that is.
@@earlfenwick There is only the OM-1, OM-1 mkII, OM-5, and PEN E-P7 in the OM System range. They are all over £1,000/£2,000 except for the E-P7, which is around £700. Still very expensive for just the body. Probably because the were all released within the last 3 years their retail value remains high. I already own an OM-D E-M5 though, they came out in 2012.
I agree completely. With the amount of bills I as well as many others have, I have a tendency of finding myself wanting, all while scouring the used listing of gear older than myself in hopes of finding that magical piece of gear and only ending up with garbage gear.
As all of you have said - although the latest shiny toys are awesome, they are not needed in any way or form to create professional work. I can also recommend the E-M1 Mark I, for example, which is an excellent camera and relatively inexpensive. There is a video about it upcoming!
@@ThomasEisl.Photography I completely agree with you. E-M1 Mk 1 was my first Olympus camera, I can't remember how much I paid for it but it was a bargain and it came with a kit lens. Since then I've stayed with Olympus. I use an E-M1 mark 3 and an E-M1X, both of which I bought second hand.

Unfortunately, I have not used a BM recorder with the OM-1. Theoretically, this should be possible. Maybe send BM an email, they know for sure!
Hello Thomas
Do you have any experience or opinions on using a phone as a camera monitor?
Thanks

5:18 You mean the mythical Voigtländer 29mm Supernokton?
Exactly this one!
I think I just said "Nokton", but I should have said SUPER Nokton indeed
😝
I checked both of these on B&H and the price difference was only $20, which surprised me.
Yes, it really comes down to the size you want/need for your work
Great video as usual. (check the link for shimbol-it's throwing up a privacy warning)
Thanks you very much!

Reply from Shimbol: They are working on it, it is an issue with their service provider.

you could drop back 1 generation in the om1 and get an amazing deal.
