I decided to buy a monitor after I watched your first video where you discussed the merits of using them. I bought a Shimbol M5 5.5 as I don't need the recording function. I am amazed at the difference it has made in my photography, it was a complete revelation when I could see the camera view on the screen and be able to nail critical focus and to have an accurate view of the composition on a larger screen. As a photography enthusiast who recently had eye surgery for early-onset cataracts (eye lenses replaced with synthetic ones), my eyes have completely lost the ability to adjust focus. Interesting I now have better than 20/20 vision for distance, but anything nearer is completely blurry. It's extremely annoying to have to wear reading glasses just to control my camera, let alone read the screen (and while the EFV has dioptre adjustment, the EVF is not practical in many instances), I have seriously been considering getting one of these screens. My biggest deterrent so far has been that I believe it is impossible to access on-screen camera controls when using one of these screens; is this a correct assumption? Thanks for sharing and your positive, very encouraging feedback - your situation is basically a prime example why you want to add a monitor to your setup. It is true that you cannot use the touch controls, as only a video signal is sent to the monitor. In practice, however, I found that to be a non-issue. Depending on camera model, there should be a convenient way to control the cameras functions w/o using touch. If you have any questions, feel free to follow up. Very nice! You should show your voigtlander collection at some point. They seem very good, and there's not much content about them on TH-cam beside the leica variants.

I purchased a 5.5 inch monitor for my OM-1 orchid photography but was disappointed to discover that the OM-1 HMDI support is not compatible with focus stacking which I use for my orchid photography. In cases where I am not using focus stacking, however, I have found the "small" monitor to be fine and I can easily analyze focus. Just wish it worked with focus stacking! Can you recommend a cage for the OM-1?

Hello! It is a stopgap solution - a "real" monitor brings many advantages in terms of usability, image quality and so on. If your budget allows, I would go for a monitor! Best, Thomas 📸

I envy people who can afford these types of cameras, lenses and gear... I mean, the OM-System looks awesome but it's clearly Pro quality stuff that is far beyond my ability ever have afforded. But as they say, it's the photographer not the value of equipment that matters most to being imaginative and skillful - outside of some commercial and industrial standards, that is.
@@earlfenwick There is only the OM-1, OM-1 mkII, OM-5, and PEN E-P7 in the OM System range. They are all over £1,000/£2,000 except for the E-P7, which is around £700. Still very expensive for just the body. Probably because the were all released within the last 3 years their retail value remains high. I already own an OM-D E-M5 though, they came out in 2012.
I agree completely. With the amount of bills I as well as many others have, I have a tendency of finding myself wanting, all while scouring the used listing of gear older than myself in hopes of finding that magical piece of gear and only ending up with garbage gear.
As all of you have said - although the latest shiny toys are awesome, they are not needed in any way or form to create professional work. I can also recommend the E-M1 Mark I, for example, which is an excellent camera and relatively inexpensive. There is a video about it upcoming!

Unfortunately, I have not used a BM recorder with the OM-1. Theoretically, this should be possible. Maybe send BM an email, they know for sure!
