Tiny Desk needs more of this, Doom metal offers a ton of amazing artists who break the norms of what people think are traditional "metal" and can win over people who are quick to use the qualifier "well I'm not a metal fan" Artists like Chelsea Wolfe and Thou have opened the door. Bands such as: Baroness, Wind Hand, Insect Ark, Yob all would be fantastic on here.
Damn, a lot of angry people in the comments talking about how sad this music made them. It's such a shame everyone is legally required to watch every single Tiny Desk concert no matter how much pain it may bring them. Stop this reign of terror now, Bob.
This is without a doubt the most calm thing from Thou I have ever heard. I just saw mention of this on reddit and my first thought was "What? How?" Because they are one of the most crushingly dense bands I have ever heard. It's dope hearing them play like this too though.
The Unspeakable Oath is so good, discovered the song while camping in Tennessee back country during a thunderstorm. When the suns eternity warms the sand, theres a more subtle way to know for sure, because those golden rays are entombed in man.
If you enjoyed this, listen to their "inconsolable" Ep from last year. Thou are definitely one of my favourite bands out there. Had the pleasure of seeing them four times in four days at Roadburn earlier this year, they can do many styles!
I did not expect Thou to appear here, let alone playing in this very understated style, but I am pleasantly surprised. Less pleasantly surprised at the number of people whinging about them in the comments here, though, who seem either to not know who Thou are or just seem to be mad that their personal tastes aren't being pandered to in one or the other direction.
@@sommelierofstench They're on indefinite hiatus. Dunno if they'll be back but it seems like they're all on good terms and promote each others' new projects
Clearly half of you have no clue who Thou is...this comment section is not expected from NPR. Usually people are fairly open, and this is Thou stripped down (without Bryan). Personally, I am kind of bummed he didn't make at least one appearance. But I can understand the creative decision here. Although Tiny Desk needs more metal, and more people who can lighten up.
This was the lineup for most songs on their current tour. Predominantly material from Inconsolable, the clean singing album, with a couple heavy songs w/Bryan and a Misfits cover.
yeah but most of their albums are heavier with more screaming. I think they want to show non metalheads that metal is just another genre, all music should be appreciated.
“Oh it’s so sad, slow and boring!” Can music not make you feel sad? Can it not be somber? I don’t even really listen to thou much, but everyone who is complaining has no clue what they are talking about 😂
It's funny I've never listened to Thou but I've always thought they were a heavy ass band just from everything I'd been told by friends, and judging by the comments from people more versed in their stuff they clearly must be lol. So seeing them playing like this is really cool! I'll have to check out their harder stuff next.
The Great Magnet because I tried to make the point that I wasn’t defending this because I like it, but because it’s different. Even though I don’t like it, I’m not disliking the video or writing mean comments
Seen better performances but i just love that they’ve on here🙏 anyone who’s a fan gets it and I love Inconsolable dearly, though most casuals viewers won’t have the context/significance of this performance from a band with such prolific output, please appreciate that they were invited by tiny desk to Perform 🙏
Do people not understand that this is an ACOUSTIC/STRIPPED DOWN version of the band? They only do this on occasion, it’s not their main draw. It’s experimentation. They did one EP of stripped down tunes like this, to add some variety to their sound. And sometimes they’ll play sets like this, instead of the insanely heavy sludge/doom metal sound that is the rest of their discography.
I love Thou and I'm so upset they didn't play any of their doom songs. I still dig this material but I was so excited to see metal on NPR only to see them play their non-metal songs
This reinforced Thou as one of my favorite bands. Also, even though i dont listen to them regularly anymore, i'd love to hear slipknot perform "vermillion pt 2" and "danger keep away" on here. I think that would be fabulous.
If you’re a thou fan and came for “brutality” then reevaluate your place as their fan. Yes they are a metal band. Yes they have heavy stuff but They are much more. Thou’s discography has variety ranging from beautiful acoustic melodic pieces like this video from “inconsolable” then ofc on the other spectrum you have Bryan’s soul crushing vocals that will guarantee to pleasantly rupture your ear drums or spiral you into melancholic despair. Or both. Like on “the house primordial” or the magnificent spilt with the body. Making them on the top of my list and earning my respect as a artist. We need more of this imo. Music is a art form and method of expression. It isn’t immutable or linear.
Amei demais a banda, bem original e uma vibe bem triste The hammer eu to escutando direto. Embora não entendi o tanto de dislike. Mais é uma otima banda e com muito tempo de carreira.

Windhand is a great band to make an acoustic version for Tiny Desk
I agree with those choices, I think Monolord would be a fantastic addition to the list and the band I would most love to see on Tiny Desk.
Yob on tiny desk would make me so happy
REZN is another. YOB is love
Imagine a Tiny Desk Concert with Pallbearer.
Would be sick to see Bell Witch on here doing a stripped version of Mirror Reaper.
either bell witch or OM, it would be killer
would be so amazing
You know, or the whole Mirror Reaper
@@DingDung420 dude... fecking yob my man.

I don't care what they say doom always brings joy to my heart
Who would've thought a Doom metal band could bring so much doom.
A slow slide to doom and I love it. Beautiful.
This is without a doubt the most calm thing from Thou I have ever heard. I just saw mention of this on reddit and my first thought was "What? How?" Because they are one of the most crushingly dense bands I have ever heard. It's dope hearing them play like this too though.
if u dont let the emotion, sadness, whatever, flow, ull b much worse off. i love thou
Listened to The Unspeakable Oath so many times after my wife passed away. One of my favorite songs ever.
Hope you are getting on okay P_R.
Kia Kaha; stay strong
@@TeamGambleBMX Thank you, we keep moving forward.
So sorry for your loss, I hope you're finding your way forward. Music seems to be the best way for that
I really like KC Stafford's voice.
Jesus Christ, The Hammer made me drop a tear man.
The Unspeakable Oath is so good, discovered the song while camping in Tennessee back country during a thunderstorm.
When the suns eternity warms the sand, theres a more subtle way to know for sure, because those golden rays are entombed in man.
Wow. Thou is not a band I expected to see on tiny desk. They killed it!
i don’t mind this. but damn how nice would it be if they played something heavy on tiny desk. the place would have erupted.
Amenra next?
That would work, they've already made an acoustic live album.
If you enjoyed this, listen to their "inconsolable" Ep from last year. Thou are definitely one of my favourite bands out there. Had the pleasure of seeing them four times in four days at Roadburn earlier this year, they can do many styles!
0:00 -The Hammer
6:04 -Come Home, You Are Missed
10:49 -The Unspeakable Oath
It’s kind of cool to hear Thou in this element
I keep coming back to this
It’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard
The more I hear Thou, the more I like. My metalhead friend introduced me to their Nirvana covers and from there I've fallen deep into metal.
I did not expect Thou to appear here, let alone playing in this very understated style, but I am pleasantly surprised.

Lars!!! thanks for showing me this band they're all over the place in the best way possible!!!
I’ve never heard of them but they sound like they could have easily been famous in the mid 90s
I love it
Listen to their albums asap.
I mean they're famous now so
You’re in for a real surprise if you listen to their other material with their main vocalist and equipment usage
So perfect for this rainy fall day in Nashville!
This just makes me really want to see Subrosa behind the desk. That would be such an incredible performance.
Bowie Twombly that would be amazing!!
Bowie Twombly allegedly they broke up

@@27deathage and not just metal but Doom, which has really carved out a it's own broad range of styles.
I dont get why they didn't play heavy stuff. As you said we would need more heavy underground bands like Bongripper, Primitive Man and The Body
You can see how versatile this band is and after Roadburn you can expect next best things!
Thank you NPR!!! This is one of my favorite bands.
I love this performance so much. It's so beautiful and heartbreaking.
I feel like if they just added fuzz this would essentially be funeral doom.
Holy shit Thou is on NPR!!
Incredible to see these guys in this setting. Thank you Thou and NPR.
This is wicked. Thanks for showcasing somthing a bit different.

Yea man, their og content is amazing and have a gnarly cover game too. No one like em
Love Matts voice so much 🥰
I can sense the spirit of a certain Cobain near this and can't explain why.
I dig it a lot.
They actually made some pretty awesome Nirvana covers! They're all on "Blessings of the Highest Order" album, I highly recommend checking it out 😊

I feel like Seinfeld's Mom when watching this and reading the comments: "How could they not like you?"
next, please invite Sleep!
When we gonna see The Body on tiny desk?
This is so good, I love this album so much 🩶

2x speed then 1:12 makes their chorus almost sound happy.
This is my new go-to video to cure insomnia. It’s twice as good as Nora Jones.
