Sorry you didn't enjoy the game play this month. Let us know if there are styles of games you don't want! We do our best to provide a variety of games but we understand if there are games you want to stay away from.
@@VGMyoukeepthegames See, THIS is why I love you guys - you didn't do ANYTHING wrong and you're still stepping up and offering to make things better. I love the service you offer, and honestly this is half the fun of getting a VGM box. The value was on point, the games just didn't click for me - but that's ok! I can trade them in or flip them down the road. :)
Does vgm ever throw in a huge banger or a high value game? Like, you get a box with madden 02, madden 03, madden 04 and then like, DefJamVendetta compete? Kinda like a lottery? Or do they strictly choose games that fit within your selected box price?
In my experience they keep things around your box price. That said, you're able to work with them - I know a few folks who have worked out an agreement where they'll get fewer have, but at a higher value. Personally, I enjoy the lottery aspect of things. This month notwithstanding, I usually have at least one or two legitimate surprises as far as a fun factor goes. Sometimes that's something I've never played, sometimes it's a game I don't pick up at expos because I'll see a common title and think 'that'll always be available' and bypass it.
@@SquarePegs I've been a customer for little over a year now. And I absolutely love the excitement I feel on the 3rd of each month. I don't really look at values of my games. But I love seeing what they toss into the box each month. Sometimes I feel like I've hit the lottery. Recieved a box that had mickey adventure racing for GBC and saints row 3 for 360. Two games I've been wanting to get my hands on. Loved it. Other months, 2 Japanese gameboy games and 2 kinect 360 games. (Oofda) It's such a fun gamble.
Ok, so Solomon's Key is one of my favorite NES games, but im willing to admit that nostalgia probably plays a pretty big role in that. Tournament Fighters is kinda the same way - it was a new Turtles game at a time when i was wild for Turtles games, and my buddies and I put a fair bit of time in on it when we were taking breaks from Street Fighter II and MK. Not a great game, but, for me anyway, it's memorable. Always love seeing these videos pop up man! I love how hard you were working to keep it positive at the end there. 😆
Definitely the DBZ game because it's Famicom goodness and I can (hopefully) find an English translation patch - the gameplay was at least compelling enough for that. Possibly (>40% chance) Tournament Fighters because it's Turtles and it's Genesis. 0% chance of the other three. Solomon's Key was the best, but it's not something I enjoy.
@@SquarePegs I have a couple of the DBZ games for the famicom but can't get anywhere because of the language barrier. I'd be interested if you find a translation patch. I might be done with VGM. So many games now are stuff I don't care to have in my collection taking up space. Undecided but I am leaning that way.
The way I look at it, one bad month doesn't outweigh every other month this year being good. I kicked the stuff over to my local shop already and got credit towards games I wanted. Easy solution. :)
I got my box today too, i get the 3-pack, with an extra. My games were Hoops, The Simpsons: Bart vs the World and Wheel of Fortune for NES, and Mission: Impossible for N64. I'm mostly using them to help with a collection, but so far had some ok hits.
Super Nintendo version of Tournament Fighters is way keen! Arguably the best 2D fighter on that format. The Genesis version... lacks slightly by comparison. Okay, more than slightly. It had me believing in console sabotage, like those rumors about Donkey Kong on the 2600 and Intellivision.
Absolutely LOVED Tournament Fighters... but I had it on NES. My parents could not be convinced to get a 16-bit system ("I'm not buying all those games all over again!") and Street Fighter 2 was eating thousands of my quarters, having ANY fighting game in that style on my system was worth it. Now, would I go back and play it? ehhhhh only if my neighbor from when I was ten showed up so I could get a rematch now that I have a little hand-eye coordination LOL
"Oh, you lovable doofus" really put a smile on my face 😁 Oh, my friend, if you think Ocean was bad on the 8 and 16 bit consoles, you need to experience some of their Microcomputer offerings 😂 You're just going to learn Japanese 😂 This box was a bad licenced game extravaganza 😂 You have to take the rough with the smooth on mystery boxes, I still think the service is worth it overall 😎👍
I think I agree with you here Jay. Rough box from a fun factor standpoint. Solomons Key is a decent game for me. But if you don’t like that style of game though. 🤷♂️ Dennis the Menace does blow on SNES for sure. 😂 Win on value but loss on fun. Maybe next month will knock your socks off.
That's awesome! I honestly really enjoy it when people love games I don't - we're a diverse tapestry of interests as gamers, and everyone's least favorite game is someone else's favorite, as my friend John frequently says. I think that's kinda cool. :)
@@retrobeliever like there are Triple A titles people love that I just can't get myself into.. but TMNT fighters is the opposite.. I'm not calling it a masterpiece & I have videos on TH-cam with my frustration right at hand. But I still love it
I would say most of the 2D fighting games even arcade ports are better on the Sega Genesis than Snes. They just play a lot better & you have more options on the Genesis to make the games easier.
I totally agree that TMNT Tournament Fighters suck. The Genesis version is the only one I own and have played. I do want to get the SNES version at some point. It has a ninja girl, Aska, which is her only appearance in the TMNT universe. She was originally supposed to be the girl from the third live action film but that movie was so poorly received that they changed the game at the last minute.
Solomon's Key, a stinker? Surely you jest! Are you trying to channel your inner ForteFyre with these zany hot takes? Fair's fair that you don't like puzzle/platformers, but I think Solomon's Key works very well as a brainier take on Super Mario Bros. Solomon's Club is a little easier, though.
The SNES version of Tournament Fighters is MUCH better. The Genesis one is borderline unplayable the SNES one is pretty much Street Fighter 2 with TMNT characters.
Sadly this is what I see a lot of times and I don't understand why people do this a lot. You get the value and but man, you get a bunch of crappy games sometimes. I watched a guy get a bunch of gameshow games (Wheel of fortune, etc) and Racing games. Yes it was worth the value but not gameplay wise. BUT I guess the whole purpose is to be surprised and there you be. Good video.
Eh, I enjoy it. Pickings are slim here as far as retro gaming - we've got legit one store within 45 minutes of here - so it's a treat to get a box of games every month. Most months I've experienced have been excellent - this one just sucked. It happens.
Good friends don't pawn off junk games to good friends at market value. VGM is not a good friend. Also, the SNES version of Tournament Fighters is a ton better. Still not really worth it, but it is by far the better version.
Turn of phrase, but sure, I get where you're coming from on this one. Maybe I'm being parasocial in my speaking but I do know the founder of the company and consider him a friend, and more often than not, the games I get are enjoyable. I know what the service is about - I pay my sub fee, I get value equal to that in return. Sometimes it's games that are excellent, and sometimes it's months like this. Hell, sometimes they're legitimate surprises where I don't expect a game to be good and they end up being legit fun. I'm not expecting a copy of Link to the Past every month.
@SquarePegs Don't get me wrong, I enjoy your content. I just see a lot of VGM in my TH-cam feed (it seems like every few months I have tons of recommendations for them), and it just never really looks like a good deal. What you said in the beginning of this video has some validitity- if a person doesn't have access to stores or conventions, it's a way to get games. There are a lot of other ways, too, though. If I wanted to try out some random stuff to see if there's something to stumble on, I feel like there's way stronger value in buying a lot on ebay, whatnot, facebook marketplace, etc. that has at least one or more things that I know I want, and then I can try the rest and see what I like from the rest. The amount of lousy boxes from VGM, Retro Game Treasures, etc. seems to grossly outweigh quality ones!
Apologies if what I said came off harshly - not my intent at all! I appreciate anyone who watches. :) There are indeed other ways to get games - but I know in my area any lot of games, no matter the quality, is over $100. Everyone is convinced they've got buried treasure, when in fact they've got six copies of Mario/Duck Hunt that no one wants. With VGM, I'm at least guaranteed to get games I don't already have, that in many cases I've never played, and are (usually) fun. Every once in awhile I'll find a garage sale locally that's an oasis of games, but otherwise I'm driving at least an hour one way to get to a store whose stock at least rotates regularly.
@SquarePegs All good! I think where I evaluate these companies harshly boils down to collecting philosophy- some people just want full shelves and large numbers, and others want games they'll play and enjoy. If the pleasure of a collection just comes from ownership, I understand subscription boxes more. If it comes from playing games (unironically), it gets harder to justify. All a matter of perspective in the end. From my end, I much prefer targeted spending. I live in the suburbs of St Louis. I do have access to stores, but I'm more your age, and have tons of games. It's tough for me to go to a store and find something I want, so I usually end up seeking out games that look interesting to me a target them very intentionally, usually having to find them online. My wife and kids and responsibilities all come first, so when I spend on myself, I want the best likelihood that I will have fun with what I buy!
The real lesson is not to subscribe to video game monthly. Good luck trying to dump these games to a retro store because they refused especially sports games unless it's NBA Jam it's a flat NO because they overly stocked with sports games that nobody wants including bad games. He's definitely not getting his money back.
Already got my money back, actually. Brought them to my local shop, got credit that equals their value, and picked up two Sonic Advance titles.
