    Quick catch on the spray booth set up. I did a few calculations based of estimated sizes and the fan you linked. A spray booth should have a face velocity of at bare minimum 50 fpm to be considered safe from backflow. The fan you linked only provides 25 fpm as a theoretical maximum before lowering the CFM because of the filter. You'd need a 400 CFM fan to get a safe direction for the airflow. 800 CFM to reach the 100 fpm standard. I'd highly recommend mounting an acrylic plate to the front to limit the opening size to about 1/4 of the size.
    You don't have to, but it is a problem I have noticed many spray booths and, to be fair, you're not working with too harsh of chemicals. The amount of risk someone wants to take on is their own. I just thought I'd pass the information along.
    As an improvement on the design, if you're buying the acrylic and mounting a face plate, you'll probably have some to spare. You could mount some baffles to the back to increase the velocity of flow at the edges and disperse the suction for a more even flow as well. It might catch some of the paint and discolor your spray booth, but the main point of a spray booth is safety from the direction of the spray and pumping the fumes and particulates away from the user and possibly into a filter. And you could always just paint it white again.

      Plus the restriction from the hose as well. I've been thinking about building my own booth for a long time, but I always get hung up on the fan setup since it quickly grows on ya. Plus I'd want a solvent safe fan as well (which that 20 buck fan for sure isn't, no matter what the company said. There's a reason explosion proof rated fans cost "slightly" more than 20 bucks).

    • @lemongambit
      @lemongambit 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@treborrrrr It depends on your use and concerns. I'm not using solvents in a high enough concentration to have to worry about explosion proofing. I'm more just trying to avoid whatever I'm spraying coming back my way and capturing whatever I'm spraying on the other end. It's not like I'm a car painting company that's pushing around immense amounts of solvent and paints at the same time or a woodworker pushing fine particle dust that will detonate on ignition. I'm just trying to save my lungs. But, again, your risk tolerance may vary. I just wanted to offer a quick and cheap improvement.

      What kind of set up do you have if you dont mind me asking. And is there any affordable fan you recommend for model spray booth.

    • @lemongambit
      @lemongambit 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tetrabronze4930 I was running that really common collapsible spray booth I bought when I started. I upgraded the fan for increased airflow an inline fan similar to the one in the video I grabbed on sale and added the bucket filter for final filtration as my windows are casement and anything blown out will blow right back in since they can't be easily sealed. That vented near a window with relatively consistent negative pressure.
      These days I'm lucky enough to have a wood workshop in which I set up a proper dust collection system. I had the spare pipes to I ran a clean secondary loop to a homemade fume hood/spray painting desk that just pumps it straight outside. Super overkill for just painting but I can spray pretty much anything I want in my shop and not have to worry about dangerous chems or noxious fumes for other small projects in addition to painting. Probably should have a clean fan on it too, but I settled for clean pipes and I'm not pumping out anything that would compound to a wood dust detonation. When the hood is fully closed, it triggers a circuit that turns off the dust collection system and turns on a much more power efficient low flow fan to keep a negative pressure for when I'm just using it to store my 3d printing resin or chems like IPA.
      For fan recommendations, I like the one listed in the description. A 200 CFM fan is more than enough for almost any application. Regarding affordability, it depends on your budget. Not the answer you were hoping for, I'm sure, but I think the $50 tag is pretty affordable for a long term piece of equipment. You could find cheaper for a smaller CFM. Just divide the CFM by 50 fpm (bare minimum) or 100 fpm (standard) to get the maximum open face area of your booth (in sqft). If your booth face is too big, close off areas you don't really use.

      Hi! Can you recommend a specific fan for a small closet sized booth? Or a specific name I can google? I can never find out what specific fans are needed for this application. The booth is like 2 feet deep, 3 feet wide and maybe 5 feet tall. Mainly gonna use it for painting guitars.

    Darn you Robert. You keep Amazon coming to my door on a regular basis. I've actually been wanting something like this for painting Helmets and Mando armor outdoors. Another awesome find my friend and love your product reviews and all the great advice you have given over the years. I am shocked you don't have 500K subs by now. I can honestly say that everything I have purchased by your recommendation has worked out great. I 3d printed some animal characters for my grandkids to paint at the 4th Picnic, and the Acrylic markers you recommended a while ago were a huge hit. They had a blast, so thank you for that. I ordered more sets for them to use at home.

    So I looked this up and it’s a great option for $30. Very cheap with the fan very solid added to my wish list just so I could keep it in case my friends asked for it later. What is funny is I have the exact same thing the only difference is there’s no pouch and it’s for my Photo Booth. It’s all the same instructions. It’s all the same size and dimensions just the Difference is the they included and instead of having reflective photos stuff on the inside so the case is different but it’s from the same factory I actually trace this back down. It’s the exact same company that sells the cheap Photo Booth. great video as always thank you Robert. Be well be you.

    I recently tested that 195 CFM fan for a 24"x48" booth with a 24x16 MERV8's and I think it was kind of an ask for that so I stepped up to that 280CFM they have for about $45 which might be overkill but that little black one is nice way to make a cheap spray booth.

    So standard, it's a 2-length x 2-length x 2-length of the rods....could you put it together in a 3-length wide x 2-length deep x 1-length height to make it a 45x30x15 booth for larger models like the 350 scale Enterprise which is 36" long when assembled?
    Or cobble two kits to make a 45x30x30....
    Ya, you'd have to cut/stitch the cover to fit...but that's not out of the realm of do-ability.
