I was a bin man in the 60s. It was hard work but I was 17 years old and very fit. we collected the bins from the rear of the house as they never put the bins out in those days. the bins were full to the brim with ashes, tea leaves, dog muck, garden waste, bricks, rubble etc. The tea slops ran down our backs when we picked the bins up and onto our shoulders, sometimes it took two men to lift the bin if the bin had old bricks and rubble in it. The hot ashes burned our backs and our clothes were always soaking, we weren't supplied with overalls as the bin men are today, so we wore our old clothes. We had fires in the back of the waggon as some of the ashes were still smouldering. The men in the video went to a cafe for breaks, we worked without a break so we could get finished. Despite this, I loved the job as the men I worked with all worked as hard as me, there were no slackers. I had a good friend who worked with me who was killed, he was riding on the step of the wagon, as we all did and he was knocked off when the waggon went too close to a lamp post, and his head was crushed by the back wheels. The driver was so shocked he never drove again for several months. The bin men of today have it good, with no heavy lifting, overalls supplied, and a decent wage.
A few UK councils still do backdoor collection. I did it on Harrogate Borough Council from 2000 to 2006. They are on wheely bins now, but all of what you said above, I remember it from 2000-2006... It was real task & finish then as well. If we finished early on a Monday, we'd go and do an hour of Tuesdays and so on. That way on a Friday, we'd start at 6am, but we'd be finished for 9am. Home, quick shower, hours kip then a long weekend till Monday morning at 6am. Was hard work but I loved it.
@@djzeederbyshire2932 It was hard work in the old days for very little money but I enjoyed it. We were supposed to start at 8 am but always came in early at 7 am. The old timers I worked with were great. I was young and fit so the work was no problem. Years later I worked with men who liked their drink so we had to run behind the wagon so that they could finish early to go to the pub. I didn't drink so I had to stay behind and wash wagons until finishing time. I later went on the road sweeper lorry and I loved it.
this procedure is so absolutely satisfying to watch, every morning when I was younger I would watch the bin lorry slowly creep down the street and the bin men rhythmically loading and unloading the bins and then jump in and go to the next street, so organised.
Thanks so much for filming this, my 15 week old puppy is absolutely terrified of the bin men so have this playing as background noise to try and get her used to the sounds, it’s really helped me and her out :)
it would be great to get a shot of the top rail as it's job is to stop the bin falling in and it also helps to dislodge any waste stuck inside. The top rails differ in council wagon, but this one here looks substantial and it doesn't wobble at all.
The bin men here can't even be bothered to put bins back where they found them. And the bins have got wheels. In the 70s bin men had to go round the back and pick them up over their shoulders and carry it all the way to the lorry and empty it themselves. Now they have it easy and still can't be bothered to do what they are supposed to. IDLE GITS!!!!!
A bin man once said to me years ago if you get a new TV or microwave or item then rip the box up and put it in a black bag and then put it in the bin don't put the full box outside on top of the bin because Not just your neighbours but other people who are walking past like burglars or know somebody whose a burglar now knows that you have just got a new item and it is worth trying to break in and get it it's the same with if you've got a caravan on your driveway and then it stood there for 11 months a year and then all of a sudden in August it's gone it's only natural that there's nobody in the house because they're on holiday ,,yes ,, somebody might be coming round to check on the place but they're not there 3 in the morning are there
Thanks for recording I need to put the sticker with the number and was wondering which side to stick it to. Looks like the back side would be best as the front gets some lorry support bits touching it

They probably have to empty 10x the amount of bins nowadays and probably get crap from pencil-pushers in the office if their round takes too long.
