Crunch time: can a new Pebble smartwatch make it in an Apple world?

  • Pebble is going back to Kickstarter to launch its new watch, Pebble Time, available starting today. The new watch is slimmer and curvier than Pebble's earlier models, and for the first time includes a color display and microphone for voice control. There's also a new software platform with a completely redesigned interface based around the concept of a running timeline. Pebble's ambitious goals don't end with this watch: it's launching a whole platform that aims to be the center of your connected world. It's going to have to attain those goals and more if it wants to remain relevant in the next generation of smartwatches coming this year.

    How to win the smartwatch market?
    1. Take this new pebble.
    2. Make it round.
    3. Make it fancy looking with metal build.
    4. ???
    5. Profit.
    Pebble is the only company that really understands the core ideology of the *smartwatch*: it is not supposed to be a phone on your wrist.

      It doesnt make me angry or anything, but why not have the video focus on what Pebble does rather than the competitors, or a competitor that hasnt even been released yet? The Pebble watch is definitively unique.

    • @NADRIGOL
      @NADRIGOL 9 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      ahpadt To be fair, I think the video spent 95% of its time covering pebble, and only mentioned its competitors in a very appropriate fashion. The Apple love in the title is overdone however.

      William Valentine Yep, that's the con for having a good battery life.

    • @ZackGeragosian
      @ZackGeragosian 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      After using both Android wear and Pebble extensively, I can definitely say that there is a huge benefit to having the buttons as opposed to a touch screen. Battery life is better and being able to use the device without taking gloves off or looking is another huge thing. Useability is just better in a lot of situations. That being said, there are definitely pros to touch screens as well, but on a watch I think I prefer the buttons.

    • @ClaudioSHuerta
      @ClaudioSHuerta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zack Geragosian I think is a matter of the user. I'm gonna try both before choosing one. But still, I think that the smartwatch OS's need to be more mature to buy one.

    • @NADRIGOL
      @NADRIGOL 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll add that having used both the pebble and the moto 360, I'm not convinced that touchscreen is the future of smartwatches. In it's current state, it feels messy. Events trigger when I don't mean them to, the fact that there are three ways to turn on the watch (tap, button, raise wrist) often means I touch something on the screen moments after I turn it on by mistake. I miss the buttons of the pebble a bit.

    Although it's not the _best_ looking watch out there, it's nice to see that Pebble sat back, assessed the trends and provided meaningful updates to their products - not necessarily adding bells and whistles just out of loyalty to buzz words. I'd love to see a more attractive design for their next iteration though, and possibly a touch screen as long as it somehow doesn't mess with the battery life.

    Okay, I must admit, I was initially sceptical but this looks awesome! The timeline is brilliant! The animations work so well with the glitch e-paper displays! They really managed to strike a balance between the plain, glanceable UI that still delivers on substance! Even the design of the watch is not too shabby. I wish the UI didn't use those colours randomly and just stuck to B&W like in the previous OS (developers can use the colours if they wanted to) but that's just my taste.

    Honestly, I don't mind the way the Verge talks about Apple, but that title. Seriously? Anyway, the second that watch comes out, I'm so getting it. My only problem with previous Pebbles was the fact that it had no color(not that that's a bad thing, I'm just very used to color displays) and the design of the UI and how you could only dismiss notifications and almost nothing else. Now that you can actually reply to texts, and the UI looks really pretty and it has color, and dat battery life. It's 100% sold for me.

    The video's title is perfect. If u look at the pebble and don't ask what u are going to do when Apple watch launches given apple's track record in new markets and the sheer size of the company, then you will be fooling yourself. TheVerge is one of the few courageous companies that does not care about the nay sayers, don't fall for the "fanboy trick" that apple haters use. Journalism at its finest. Great work guys, among these naysayers, there are also people who appreciate your dedication and honesty.

    I'm glad technology on the wrist is being work on by so many companies. i think everyone(developers/consumers) is trying to make something amazing from something thats fad or not used very much. I think developers and consumers think the next big thing has to be on your wrist when it doesn't. Where's the "smart clothing"? I want notifications on my jacket. My gloves should let me control my phone and my car. My hat should display my music and post.

    I LOVE the animations and the colour screen!!
    As a professional I can't wear a "Tamagotchi" though. Please please please Pebble make a steel one.
    You have to make it quickly too. The smartwatch market is about to blow open with the iWatch breaking into the market. Whether you like Apple or not, they will supercharge the market and make smartwatches much more of a socially accepted item.
    I know you didn't put emphasis on fashion-oriented design and you have done an amazing job, however I think offering a metal version with a small-as-possible bezel would give you a huge advantage. You could basically mop up much of the iOS and Android Market.
    I would buy one the second it's up. Come to think of it, I will apply to a job as an software or hardware systems engineer with you. I love what you're doing. Hope you have an office in Canada :)

    I think Pebble is going to get it more right about the smartwatch. I believe they are going to be a cool peripheral that complements your phone (or tablet? Laptop?) instead of replace them. The Apple watch seems to want to be an impressive conversation piece and a premium piece of jewelry. It won't flop, but it won't expand the concept.

    After owning a few Android watches, I realized they were taking too much of my personal time.
    I think Pebble is doing it right. Not everything goes on the watch that's on the phone. It needs to be a companion to your phone but its main idea is for you to read notifications and check TIME.
    I think no touch screen is no brainer. I only want the watch to interact when I press a button. It needs to be rugged.
    Just can't wait for that many months for it to arrive :D

  • @ashtonhozouri5670
    @ashtonhozouri5670 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love this thing. I was never excited for a pebble product until now. I know the design is rather polarizing, and the screen isn't something with a likeness to apple's or google's watches, but as we're constantly reminded, 2 sizes don't fit all. I totally agree with Dan about the animations being whimsical, and I think I like that part the best. This thing doesn't try to take itself too seriously, but the pebble time, along with its creators, really seem to know what they're about. Multiple OS compatibility, long-ass battery life, what's not to love?
    Looking back at what a watch really used to embody, I'm reminded of this Swatch I used to own. Leather band, playful yet practical face. It wasn't some fancy expensive Rolex or some super capable, overly complex digital timex piece, it just worked while being just a little bit different, and I loved it more than any timepiece I've ever owned since then (minus the mustache clock in my room). I believe the pebble is new form of that Swatch. People will buy different watches for their own totally respectable reasons. Me? I'm buying that smartwatch that's just a bit different but a smartwatch that just works. I think I'll enjoy every second with it.

    What's really genius about the Pebble (old and this new one) is that they are basically still very simple devices. They are "anti-smartwatch smartwatches" and they are kinda alone in that market. That's smart! Don't compete with Apple and Google, with their overdesigned smartwatches. Also, that battery life is pure gold! I can live with charging my phone every day but not my damn watch.

    I want one of these. Its seems like a foolproof, simple device.
    I don't want a phone on my wrist. It doesn't cost like 300 bucks either.

    When I initially read up on this and saw pictures, I thought they were backtracking on the design and wasn't a fan of the look of the os changes. Now that I'm seeing it in motion, #iWANT! Looks WAY better than the Apple watch with one day battery life Lol
