On the Elden Ring "no quest log" thing. I think it’s a wonderful way to create a game. There is very little stress feeling like I HAVE TO explore, I explore because it’s awesome. The Ubisoftication of open worlds is very tiring.
I also love that when you find a map that it doesn't show you anything new besides the terrain so even though the fog is cleared there's still a mystery and sense of exploration to the world. I've completely missed bonfires and caves bc of this but that also really gives off this sense of "Whoa I wonder what else is out there" that modern games fail miserably at providing

I agree with Derrick, Elden Ring truly shines when you stop looking at it with the traditional Souls lens. For example I had a buddy refuse to skip the Tree Sentinel because he “had to beat him” before he moved on. He finally beat him a couple hours later but definitely wasted time overall. The beauty of encountering this mini boss is that you can skip him entirely. I died to him a couple times and said, “nah not right now”. 20 min later I got my horse, went back to him, then proceeded to beat him in a couple tries. The point is, from soft wanted me to take advantage of the game being open world and not waste my time mindlessly fighting an uphill battle. In the past, I would of had to beat the mini boss to move forward in the game. This is no longer the case! Overall all I’ve been enjoying the game when I have time to play it haha. Glad to know others are enjoying it as well!
That is the classic dark souls strategy though. Running past enemies is taught as early as undead asylum. Shame so few people caught on to that and think they have to kill everything in front of them. Im on New Game Plus and got every achievement boss. The game is great. Godskin Duo is bull though.
Derrick talking about writing notes really reminds me of The Painscreek Killings which is a kind of open world detective game where you absolutely need to keep your own notes to solve the mysteries. It was so cool
Wind Waker was a great game for journaling and keeping track of different islands to revisit once you had acquired tools/items in the future. Sailing the seas made it really feel like open world on the GameCube.
Yo Derrick, my grandma use to randomly print out pictures too. Some without even me in it and she wasn't in it either. My mom always complained or was even hurt when our family did not print pictures out for her of her grandkids and all that. She chilled after she got more involved with social media but she still wanted us to print photos for her. Both passed away within 6 months of each other in 2019 and early 2020. I don't regret anything with the photo stuff, HOWEVER, both had totes and boxes of photos, and my mom had like a Wal-Mart sack filled with undeveloped film. It was fun to hangout with family and go through the photographs. Then, getting a 50% off discount, I developed the film for $645.50. It was incredible and touching and I did feel quite a bit sad that my mom had passed without seeing 97 film rolls worth of pictures. I'd say to you and Rocco, print out some pics and throw them up somewhere. My goal, it to find a singular photo of an event or a person to encapsulate the most emotions and memories possible. Or it could be the best memory. Or it could be a photo of how you want to remember someone if you have a conflicting relationship. Narrowing down makes the singular photo truly meaningful in my opinion. 10 out of 10, would recommend.
Really fun to see the mega64 boys finally so excited about a souls game. All the components they raved about have always been present in the previous games, but there's something about this game that just makes it all more accessible. Even what Derrick was saying about the open world element allowing you to fuck off and explore other areas and come back when you're stronger has always been there to an extent in DS1, but now it's done much better. by the way, the "exploit" Derrick found isn't really an exploit, they purposefuly made it so that you can go to most places on the map without needing to be funneled through the obvious enemy gauntlets. Even Stormveil castle can be entirely bypassed to get to Liurnia to the north earlier if you want some item from there before you complete that Legacy dungeon. So yeah, using the horse to jump around and sneak behind that giant is a totally legit way to play the game.
Most of the "liar ahead" messages are a response to players leaving "secret room" messages. In older souls game there are occasional fake walls that you can slash to find a secret path. It's become a meme in this one especially for players to leave secret ahead messages at walls everywhere, with other players dropping "liar ahead" afterward.

FromSoft's games are partially about abusing mechanics and finding ways to cheese or skip things so good on derrick for figuring it out. I'll be interested to see if he beats the game after grinding because due to the way soft/hard caps work in these games you will likely get your ass beat a lot by bosses regardless of how many stats you put into things unless you grind to level 100 or so
Ik the whole "strand type game" has become a bit of a meme, but unironically the message system in souls games does exactly what (I think) kojima was trying to do in death stranding. Never put it together until you guys brought it up, incredible.
I'm just like Shawn when it comes to Horizon. I'm enjoying the game but I always pass out while I'm playing lol I've tried to play the game like 10 times and haven't played more than a few hours. To be fair, I don't have a great sleep schedule and when I get off of work at 7 PM I'm pretty tired but Horizon makes me fall asleep quicker than most games
When I explain Elden Ring to my uninitiated friends I say BoTW with actually good combat, plus it has multiplayer and focuses more on rpg mechanics. It's the Oreo to Hydrox. BoTW underwhelmed me because I like Zelda for the dungeons, the BoTW dungeons that existed weren't to my liking, the bird mech was cool though. The BoTW chemistry system was cool too, it emphasized creativity and that's why BoTW wasn't all about bringing the best combat. I'm a fellow Elden Ring astrologer 1000 runes will quickly take way too long at higher levels, this sounds good for early game though, but I'd rather just explore ruins, catacombs, and caves than grind, you get equipment/spells doing that too. Most of them are easy and have no / weak generic bosses. Derrick is probably beyond ready to fight every boss in that first area of the map now if he's just been grinding out levels. Heres an exploit that's always existed and won't be fixed: If you took on a boss holding a bunch of exp and can't beat it, but don't want to lose your exp just grab the exp and quickly quit to the menu. You will be brought back holding your exp outside the boss room. I believe leveling also increases passive defenses too. I'm running around completely naked and living, vigor is the way to go if you don't have any equipment to work towards. I have to get around 15k runes to level up right now. Soon just playing the game normally will level you faster because they usually scale the enemy's exp drops to drop higher amounts as you progress further into the map and bosses drop a sheetload. You may find another exploitable enemy in a further region of the map though, you'll see. You'll want to find the waypoint ruins If you haven't found it yet Derrick, there's a lady who teaches spells there. It's somewhere kinda South East from the first church you find. Carrian Slicer and Scholar's Armament is what you want from her the other spells are fun, but deal too low damage or use too much mana sadly. Prisoner is another good mage class to start with for others that might want to try this game out too, it's more equipped to be a spell-sword and has a nice starting spell. It's probably easier because of forced melee situations.

How is Elden Ring a BoTW knockoff if games have been doing what BoTW did decades beforehand? Why do people keep praising the game as if it has done anything new? You could say it improved on the open-world but it didn't revolutionized anything.
