Tomato varieties for 2023 | Sowing the scions

- I have delayed starting my tomatoes by about two weeks this season, partly due to the cold weather and partly because the plants were huge by the time we got to planting out last year. In this video I waffle on about the varieties - which include 17 regional Italian sorts - and then do a bit of sowing. I will be grafting again this year, so I will sow the rootstocks in a few days' time.
Varieties:
Yellows: Sungold F1, Ananas, Yellow Brandywine.
Small fruited: Piennolo del Vesuvio, Corbarino, Borgo Cellano, Tondo Maremmano, Fiaschetto, di Torremaggiore.
Large fruited: Canestrino di Lucca, Pisanello, Riccio di Parma, Ladino di Pannocchia, Belmonte, Gigante della Sila, Rosa di Sorrento, Dieci dita di Napoli, Pera d'Abruzzo, Pantano, Albenga.

Hi Jonny, You say it's waffling, I say its informative conversation! Looking forward to seeing the rootstocks and grafting procedures again. Possible chilly end to the month and beginning of April.
I remember you warned me of the potential for a cold spell - one of the reasons I am delaying sowing a bit this season - thanks!

all this year! I have seeds for a lot of the varieties you mentioned too I just didn’t have space for them this year. Very excited to see how they work out.

I have just gained a new bit of allotment. It's a lot of weed to clear. On the plus sides it was used as a chicken run so well fertilised and its mostly vertical growing. I normally have room for about 70 indoor tomatoes. This year I am going to double and see if any of them do well outside. Plus add some extra ones which I didn't think I had room for.
One thing off the list year is current varieties. I grew them for the kids to pick. They got bored as sooo small and are pain to harvest. 😂 Only good things about them were they tasted OK and they did well outside.
Any good outdoor varieties you know of for the wilds of coastal Lancashire?
It's a while since I grew tomatoes outside except for the occasional spares so I'm sorry I don't have so much knowledge of suitable varieties. I think bushes are better suited than cordons, especially if its a bit exposed. I always liked the proper Marmande, which is a bush type (some variants are cordons) - maybe a bit common, but I found it to be a good all rounder with pleasant flavour. Lots of the plum types are bushes too and tend to do ok outdoors. I would perhaps look to some of the bush varieties from colder parts of eastern and northern Europe as they should ripen well outdoors and I know some of them are fairly early. I don't often recommend anything modern, but given that blight could be a problem outdoors it might be worth trying one of the modern resistant varieties. I don't know how good they are in either their disease resistance or flavour but the likes of Crimson Crush appear to be fairly popular. It's not really my kind of thing and I've never grown it, but it might be worth throwing something like that into the mix.
I'm doing cloudy day, san marzano, Chocolate Stripe Cherokee, Cesare's Canestrino di Lucca, Better Boy, Early Girl, and Box Car Willie. (US)
Maybe the san marzano likes your crazy conditions - it never seems that happy here 🤷♂️ Nice collection though :)

We have some similar varieties on the go this year. Oddly enough, I met Charles Dowding last week and gave him some 'Pantano Romanesco' seeds, which I think must be similar to what you have planted.
I think you're right - that's another name for the same variety - nice 👍😊
I am growing a tomato of Italian heritage this year, it's called George Detsika's Italian Red. If it turns out nice, you are welcome to have some seed for next year.

Interesting - those big fellas are often pretty slow to get going so an early one could be useful 👍

Hello! Please, may I know where you buy the seeds? I've been scouring the internet and it appears to me there is no seller who has extensive offering of seeds so I will probably need to buy each variety from different store. Thank you for letting me know!
Yes, that can be a problem. I often buy from Seeds of Italy, then it's a case of hunting down the other varieties from various places. I have bought from Italian companies in the past - after brexit the most useful supply of obscure varieties I found no longer ships to the UK and others have proven unreliable - some I am certain are not the correct variety at all. It is a pity; there are still some UK suppliers with interesting sorts but it usually does involve a tedious search and buying from many different places.
And because I know you like to shake your head at our weather, our high was 22'C Wednesday, and only -2C Thursday, with 55mph winds. (I start my first seeds April 1)
