7 Years Later I Still Prefer A Chain Grinder To Hand Filing! But It's A More Nuanced Opinion Now!

I agree with everything you said in the video. Especially the part where a round file puts a better finish to the cutter but the grinder will true everything up to make your hand filing even better because you have a really good starting point. Great stuff Leon. I can not to begin to thank you enough for sharing your knowledge. ~Dr. Cutter

Ill do a.couple filings in the field, then its back on the grinder. I also use skip chain on the long bars to keep the filing time down.

I have the hand files and a sharpening machine that I got from Harbor Freight. I think I get more consistent results by using the machine, because like you said, it’s putting the same amount of force on the cutting teeth on both sides of the chain. I may get better results with the files with more practice, but I primarily just cut enough to feed my fireplace

I work in a chainsaw shop years ago and we used to take in a lot of chains to be cleaned and sharpened. That shop was a homelite dealer work on a lot of homelite

It is always nice to true up a chain with a machine but I do like to file. Many places will grind too much tooth just to be fast and will most likely hurt the temper of the tooth

I grind a lot of people chains who do file in the woods, until that can't get the chain to cut good anymore. When I put the chain on my grinder, you really see the difference in angles and depth that each tooth has. I use a borizon diamond wheel, and never burn a chain and make it blue so you can't file it anymore. It's the people that try and grind a chin in record speed that make grinders seem bad. To them, time is money, but if you temper a guys chain, so he can't file it anymore, he isn't coming back.

I have had my Techomec Jolly chain grinder for over 20 years. The BEST thing I ever did with that was start using the Borizon diamond wheels. I'm on my second set over 20 years, with several thousand chains sharpened, so that's not bad. They keep the same shape always, and never burn a chain. When people bring me chains that they were eating rocks, dirt and everything else, these wheels will take the teeth down to new way better than the stone wheels. And, you don't get all the grinding wheel dust in addition to the metal tooth dust. I never hammer the wheel down on the chain because I'm in a hurry, like other videos I've seen. Take your time for a much better job.
I use a happy medium on the angles. I use 30 degree on the table and 65 on the head. I've found that a super sharp chain cuts really fast, but dulls fast too. A more blunt chain cuts a little slower, but lasts a lot longer. That, of course, is my opinion.

Me too...I hate to be a snob about it, but once you have used full chisel, it's hard to cut with anything else!

Why does it keep sparkling after two touches? The stone blade is flexing?

No, I tend to hold back on the bottom of a stroke until I'm confident that the depth stop is correct.
