US to send Ukraine longer-range rockets in latest aid package - BBC News

  • The US will send Ukraine more advanced rocket systems to help it defend itself, President Joe Biden has announced.
    The weapons, long requested by Ukraine, are to help it strike enemy forces more precisely from a longer distance.
    Until now, the US had refused the request out of fear the weapons could be used against targets in Russia.
    Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the US was "directly and intentionally adding fuel to the fire" with its weapons deliveries to Ukraine.

    Typical inaccuracies that media seem unable to get correct. I have not heard anywhere that Germany is sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine. Rather they committed to sending the Gepard anti-aircraft vehicles which happen to be built on the Leopard I chassis. Its name in German - Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer Gepard- includes the word "panzer" (tank), but it is not a tank. Germany said they would send the Gepards weeks ago, but to date not one sent. B-T-Y, when Poland sent 250 T-72 tanks to Ukraine, Germany promised to replace them with Leopard I tanks - a promise not kept to date. You are also incorrect about the Iris-T. This is an air-to-air missile. What Germany IS sending is the Iris-T SL which is an Iris-T modified and improved for surface-to-air use, and has twice the range (40 km or 25 miles). Hope that you will be more accurate in the future. Just a little research would prevent broadcasting inaccuracies.

    • @Kurt_kh
      @Kurt_kh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes, iris sl. These are the ones that Scholz promised to send, but it turned out that Germany did not have them. As the German Foreign Ministry later stated, "we meant that we would contact the manufacturer and agree on a deal, this could take several months."

    • @danielwhyatt3278
      @danielwhyatt3278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kurt_kh REALLY? According to the information we got about two weeks ago now, apparently Germany does intend to send them and apparently, unfortunately, they won’t be in Ukraine until about early July. This is still very late but I still hope this does indeed mean they will be going over there. Ukraine critically needs this system ASAP on the front lines and to protect cities.

    • @danielwhyatt3278
      @danielwhyatt3278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chester Thanks for the correction. If this is indeed true then I am surprised the BBC would make a mistake like this. It would also be hugely disappointing as this would be a system capable of actually protecting a very large area of the cities that are needed. Hope this is proved to be correct in the coming hours, as although the Gepard anti-aircraft vehicles would be a great help, and hopefully will indeed be arriving in early to mid July, I still hope that this other rocket system will be arriving from Germany as soon as possible. The Germans are incredibly stickler for training so we Gotta hope this can be done sooner rather than later as they are still supposed to be sending over their mobile armoured howitzer units to Ukraine as well and training on those should’ve started a few weeks ago now in Germany.

    The true definition of madness,” Einstein reportedly said, “is repeating the same action, over and over, hoping for a different result.” Unfortunately, many proposals for ending the war on Ukraine ask the Ukrainians to repeat the same actions they have tried over and over with disastrous results. Those advocating for trying these approaches yet again bear a heavy burden of explaining why this time would be different.
    Many outcomes that may sound plausible to those uninformed about Putin’s history quite rightly look disastrous to Ukrainians. For example, Putin has said he wants a neutral, “demilitarized” Ukraine. Russia had that beginning in 1994, when Ukraine surrendered the nuclear weapons it inherited from the Soviet Union in exchange for guarantees of its existing boundaries from Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
    Rather than allow this neutral, demilitarized Ukraine to live in peace within the longstanding boundaries Russia pledged to guarantee, Putin exploited Ukraine’s weakness to intervene in its politics and fix a presidential election for his deeply corrupt crony. When the Ukrainian people overthrew Putin’s puppet, Putin again took advantage of Ukraine’s weakness by seizing Crimea and a large part of Ukraine’s industrial heartland in the East.
    At some point, outsiders may tell the Ukrainians that they should accept a ceasefire at any price, even if it leaves Russian forces in their country. Ukraine did this after Russian’s 2008 invasion, with the promise of peace talks.
    Russia responded by stalling, shelling unoccupied parts of Ukraine, setting up two corrupt puppet regimes in its occupied territories - one of which shot down a Malaysian civilian airplane - and ultimately disavowing its agreement, to invade yet again.
    Nor are these isolated intrusions. Throughout the region, Russia has repeatedly seized parts of its neighbors’ territory, agreed to a ceasefire, and then continued its occupation without serious negotiations. It has occupied two regions of Georgia and one in Moldova for decades. Ukrainians know these “frozen conflicts” mean an indefinite loss of sovereignty, the indefinite subjugation of Ukrainians to Russian misrule, and a constant source of instability draining the country’s human and financial resources.

      By law, Ukraine has the right to attack strategic russian points within russia close to the border with Ukraine, which they supposedly have already done when they attacked a fuel depot in a russian city that is very close to the border with Ukraine. Ukraine's minimum objective is to push away or liquidate all the russian and separatists from the Donbas region, I doubt that they will try to push to retake Crimea but who knows what will happen when Ukraine will finally start to receive more and more heavy weapons from the west.

      What can anyone say at this point?
      The SPD and chancellor Scholz are getting a lot of flak for their "indiciveness" and "deliberate slowness" both inside and outside of Germany.
      Hell Scholz was criticised to hell and back by opposition leader Merz and others at the Bundestag just today...
      No effect.
      Scholz pretends it has nothing to do with him, stubbornly repeats his excuses and tries to distract with new BS.
      Its embarassing but we are, hell europe and the world... are stuck with the coward for now.
      He got elected by the sheer luck of having an opponent that thoroughly refused to mostly even try to do anything for the election and the few meager attempts he ( Armin Laschet) absolutely botched.
      If you want to know why Scholz is behaving like this... well there are a few reasons:
      1. His party has historical ties to Russia and romanticed the country for decades and more.
      Old habits die hard.
      2. The SPD (party of Scholz) has made splendid business with Russia... also for decades.
      3. The SPD tries to appeal to pacifists, a position previously held by the "Greens" but abandoned by them, once Russia attacked Ukraine.
      Its a cold calculation for new voters.
      4. Olaf Scholz is a coward. Plain and simple.
      He's terrified of the situation he faces and would rather do nothing and pretend its not there.
      In short: He's the worst possible leader for the current situation.
      Sorry for the rant 😅

Also we don't know how accurate it is as it's never been fired in anger. The missile system is not coming with counter battery radar, so will not be able to trade blows with Russian artillery. This needs to be reinforced as well otherwise it’ll be no good long term. The German equipment will allow them to actually ‘protect the cities’ that are needed thank goodness (something that has been needed since WEEK ONE), while the US long range rockets can be used to attack the Russian rocket systems and aircraft that are hampering the Ukrainian efforts to hold their cities and move forward.

      They are already short of ammunition for the triple 7 hauwitzer and the Marder can't get ammunition due to Swiss, which could produce but denied, due to lack of rest ammunition in Germany and that Bolsonario could but wont deliver. There's a lot of obstacles which prevents certain deliveries. I hope Germany and Netherlands can deliver the Haubitze 2000 self-propelled soon. Could make a difference in Donbass. The training must be completed in a few days and the delivery too. Leopards are still denied, but no one delivers tanks to Ukraine! NATO decision! But I have also to say that, exept the US, no one really can "give up" heavy artillery or other heavy weapons. Because you have to look after your own defense abilities. For Germany, the Bundeswehr is in bad shape in parts and needs modernization itself. Ukraine is talking of Leopards and F-16 fighter jets, well that wont happen. There are obvious reasons for that. Ukraine demands this and that, and very aggressive sometimes, but the reality is often a cutter. No one, exept the US, has so much material to give that this war direction could change fast. That's not the case, reality often bites hard and no one really wants Ukraine lose this war.

      Well no ish there was a separate cooperative organisation made for between relations of NATO and Russia (since Russia wouldn’t apply for NATO normally without special privileges) but after 2014’s events was dissolved, Europe becoming cautious of Russia, the energy deals themselves previously were symbolism of renewed trust and cooperation with Russia… which of course Russia used to backstab them after invading a sovereign country with silly pretexts covering for greed. Putin has sowed discord when he could have lead mutual propriety with Europe on even grounds, but he was too prideful for that it seems still stuck in the times of the USSR’s brutal totalitarianism.
