- Carl Maria von Weber's Andante e Rondo ungarese in C minor for bassoon and orchestra op. 35, performed by soloist Mathis Stier and the WDR Sinfonieorchester conducted by Julio García Vico. Mathis Stier is principal bassoonist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra and winner of the 2019 ARD Music Competition, while Julio García Vico won the 2019 German Conducting Award. Recorded live on December 3, 2020 at the Kölner Philharmonie.

Mein Gott es ist einfach so unfassbar gut gespielt. Diese perfekten aber gleichzeitig so gefühlvoll getroffenen Noten. Einfach irre. Selten so einen guten Fagott Spieler gesehen.

Höchst beeindruckend, mit welcher Hingabe, Präzision, Perfektion und unendlich viel Gefühl Mathis dieses Instrument beherrscht. Es ist ein Genuss ihm zuzuhören, ein wahrer Ohrenschmaus. Fagott ist eh eines meiner Lieblingsinstrumente, könnte es stunden - ja tagelang hören. Mathis Kaspar Stier ist für mich einer der besten Fagottisten. Ach ja, so oft ich ihn spielen sehe (und höre), tut er das ohne Notenblatt - einfach genial.
Freut uns, dass wir Ihnen damit so viel Freude bereiten konnten. 😃

Ich habe mir das Stück schon 100 Male angeschaut und es hat mich immer wieder begeistert. Diese Perfektion, dieses gefühlvolle Vibrato und die Klarheit in der Betonung. Ich soll nämlich selber dieses Solo in Zukunft spielen und es hat mir sehr beim Üben auch mit der Betonung geholfen. Hut ab!

Mathis Kaspar Stier no sólo posee una técnica envidiable, que nos presenta cómo fácil los más endiablados pasajes. Pentagramas que algunos no conseguiríamos dominar en toda nuestra vida.
Pero Mathis, además de un envidiable dominio del fagot (que no es lo más importante, en el fondo), consigue elevar las notas del papel pautado, para conseguir expresividad a raudales. Música de la buena. Y esa cualidad siempre ha estado con su genio. Si le faltara un brazo, aquella musica que pudiera ejecutar, sería igual de bella.
Kaspar Stier es un músico al que no se le puede perder la referencia. Un chaval impresionante.

Love it. Heard it on the radio the other day and it made me realise perhaps I should listen a little more to Weber's music. If only it had at least one more movement.

Such purity of sound, both solid and light, with an effortlessly sustained « through line » is a pure wonder!
The bassoon’s baritone « voice » sears above the ensemble naturally, with ornamentations and embellishments finding their place as subsidiary to the protagonist’s expressiveness …
Seamless technical proficiency of this order confers a degree of freedom and ease on the soloist which makes listening a revelation and rare delight.
As such this performance makes the concerto sing like an opera aria.
And oh, the underrated genius of Weber, which reconciles Mozartian gravitas with the parodic wit of Rossini.
A warm, full, unified and dynamically agile sound from orchestra under a very fine conductor.

Hi, Sean! We double-checked with Mathis Stier - he plays double tongue here. He also pointed out that some bassoonists even prefer triple tongue in that part, however, he performs it with double tongue. :) Regards from Cologne!
